After walking over seventy miles on the highway, they arrived at a well-known town in the Post-Apocalypse.
This town was once famous for its numerous cement factories, but now, as Zheng Yifan and Li Ning approached, it was no longer seen that way. Before them stood not just any factory, but a massive city, or rather, a war fortress.
It was a colossal metropolis constructed from cement and mortar. The height of its walls could not compare to that of the Hope Gathering Place, and their sturdiness was even less impressive. Yet, this place truly represented humanity's hope for survival.
Seeing the envious and reverent expressions on the faces of those entering the city made it clear that to them, this place felt like a sacred site, a destination for pilgrimage.
However, for Zheng Yifan and Li Ning, it was nothing out of the ordinary.
Watching the people ahead with their cold expressions and brazenly collecting entrance fees filled them with an odd sensation.
Was it really acceptable to charge such blatant entrance fees without the permission of the authorities? Was there truly order here?
The sight of starving common folk painfully digging into their pockets to hand over a few morsels of food was heart-wrenching. Their expressions were as if they were giving away their lives.
They understood that for common survivors, food equated to life. A couple of ounces of grain might seem trivial, but it was certainly not enough for even one meal for themselves.
This was nearly half of their rations.
As Zheng Yifan approached, two Gatekeepers blocked their path.
"Outsiders?" The two looked at Li Ning with evident hostility. However, Zheng Yifan noticed they were fixated on Li Ning's weapon—the gleaming Psychic Weapon was a top-tier creation from the Hope Gathering Place, perfectly suited to Li Ning's abilities. Its value was immense.
"We came from the south. This is our entrance fee," Zheng Yifan stated. He had come here merely to observe their environment and understand the situation of the people; more importantly, he needed a break from the overwhelming matters back at the Gathering Place. Of course, this was particularly true for him as someone who preferred to take it easy.
"Since you are outsiders, you can't just pay such a small entrance fee. I see this Fellow's weapon is quite nice; if you hand it over, you won't have to pay an entrance fee next time," one of the guards remarked astutely, recognizing that Li Ning's Psychic Weapon was indeed a fine piece.
Li Ning suddenly smiled and raised his hand to offer his weapon casually.
But Zheng Yifan knew that this was not a good sign; Li Ning's Psychic Weapon was custom-made and could not be wielded by just anyone. It was forged from the strongest alloys, and if these two dared to take it, they would likely suffer severe injuries.
Sure enough, as one of the guards reached out to take Li Ning's weapon, he felt as if a mountain had fallen upon him. In an instant, he was crushed under its weight.
"Boom!" A loud sound echoed, followed by a man's wailing, sobbing like a madman.
"He Er! What the hell are you doing? Can't even hold onto something! Still pretending to be tough!" The guard beside him seemed unable to tolerate his companion's shouting. He disdainfully reached for Li Ning's weapon.
"Huh?" A puzzled voice escaped his lips as he forcefully tried to reach in.
But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't budge the weapon an inch.
"Do you need me to help?" Li Ning said calmly.
"Sir! Please, just move your hand. I'm begging you." Before the guard could continue straining, the fellow beneath him spoke up first.
At that moment, the other fellow finally noticed the guard's hand.
The center of the long spear-like weapon appeared to be embedded in his companion's hand. From the side, a trickle of blood began to flow out slowly; that hand was definitely ruined, with shattered bones visible beside the palm. It had been smashed to pieces.
Suddenly, he felt a chill in his pants. It was as if a cold wind had blown through, leaving his heart feeling icy.
"Ugh!" Zheng Yifan seemed to recoil in disgust, taking two steps back.
The people nearby frowned and quickly retreated as well. However, they absolutely dared not make a sound like Zheng Yifan's; they had grown accustomed to being managed by these two and truly did not dare to provoke them. Otherwise, when the zombies rioted, they would have no way to enter the city.
This was their only escape route. Offending these two meant nearly extinguishing their hopes of survival.
"Li Ning, put away your weapon. It seems they don't want it anymore," Zheng Yifan said helplessly, shrugging as he stepped past the man as if he didn't see them at all.
"Yes! Boss!" Zhang Ning lightly tapped the tip of the spear with his right foot, causing it to stand upright. He casually slung it over his shoulder and walked toward the city with ease.
Suddenly, there was a stir among the crowd as they caught sight of what had happened to that fellow's hand.
The middle part of his hand looked as if it had been crushed by a heavy object, completely turned into mush. What shocked everyone most was that there was almost no outward force or injury to other areas.
But everyone knew that this fellow's right hand was ruined; from now on, he would only be able to use one hand.
The two Gatekeepers were fully aware of their status as Second-Stage Espers; otherwise, they wouldn't have secured such a lucrative job. They merely stood at the entrance, collecting fees, and when Zombies approached, they could simply shut the door without a care for anyone else's fate.
There was no easier job than this, but now they had made an enemy—a Big Shot.
A weapon, casually placed in someone's hand, could be unbearably heavy. Yet that person seemed to handle it as if it were a mere chopstick, resting it lightly on their shoulder, even hooking it with just a finger.
Everyone watched the two who entered with expressions filled with terror.
"You sly one," Zheng Yifan whispered to Li Ning after they had walked about fifty meters into the city. Only the two of them could hear this exchange.
"Boss, this is just a punishment. Those people have it hard enough as it is. These two Fellows are even charging them for their lives. If it were before, I would have taken them out directly," Li Ning replied, his face slightly flushed.
"Well done!" Zheng Yifan nodded and continued forward.
Li Ning, however, was already lost in thought. His weapon certainly did not weigh as much as that; it was only about a thousand pounds—heavy by Post-Apocalypse standards, but for that Superpowered Individual, it could have been avoided.
It was just that Li Ning had applied dozens of times the weight to the weapon and used his Superpower to bind that individual, which led to their defeat. The reasons behind this were known only to those involved. (To be continued)
