In the Holy City, construction was underway, and as everyone prepared to march into battle, Zheng Yifan was also ready to unleash a wave of violence at any moment. Those who followed him would prosper, while those who opposed him would perish; this was the way of survival in chaotic times. Though brutal, it was a rule that everyone had to abide by.
However, at that moment, disaster struck Ancheng.
Ancheng was not just a place filled with lush vegetation; it was also home to various eateries lining the streets. Yet, with the onset of the apocalypse, all the shops had become useless and were now being demolished for reconstruction.
Once a large number of construction machines arrived in Ancheng, the area was soon bustling with activity.
But beneath Ancheng lay danger.
This was the Sewers of Ancheng, once teeming with rats, cockroaches, flies, and various other creatures. However, since the apocalypse began, only cockroaches remained; they had consumed all other life forms. These cockroaches were notorious for their insatiable appetite and extraordinary digestive abilities. Having survived since the Jurassic era, their resilience was nothing short of remarkable.
Now that Ancheng was undergoing extensive construction, nearly all buildings had been leveled, and the original Sewers were being re-planned and rebuilt.
To accommodate future living conditions for people, the Underground Pipeline needed to be expanded at least threefold. This meant constructing everything at once to minimize future disruptions.
The plan involved burying the Underground Pipeline five meters deep while constructing parallel conduits and drainage systems. This was a city-wide initiative that could be considered as having been designed from the very beginning. While all above-ground facilities were still on paper, the design for the Underground Pipeline had already been completed. Other building designs were nearing implementation as well, requiring a massive design team.
However, there were clear traces of the Underground Pipeline's construction progress. It was moving relatively quickly; currently, hundreds of Construction Workers had entered the site to begin dismantling old pipelines that needed to be buried. There was no option to leave them underground; their goal was total destruction followed by reconstruction.
At the forefront of the Construction Team were two Excavators. Although their power paled in comparison to Superpowered Individuals, they still wielded significant strength in the hands of ordinary workers.
The Excavators plunged forcefully into the ground, demolishing the Underground Pipeline as their first task. Once destroyed, they would fill in the holes with soil and finally seal them off.
This was precisely what the entire Construction Team aimed to accomplish.
The construction had reached its seventh phase. The filling of the outskirts of the city was complete.
However, when they broke through a pipe with the excavator this time, a sudden surge of black liquid erupted, causing everyone to gasp and quickly retreat.
In this apocalyptic world, everyone was struggling to survive in the depths of death, fully aware of the value of life.
Now, facing this unknown black substance, they maintained a hundred percent respect and vigilance.
The best course of action was to step back and request military assistance.
"Report to command, an unknown creature has attacked the sewer construction in Zone 715. Requesting support. Requesting support," the leader of the construction team shouted frantically into the walkie-talkie before driving away in the dump truck.
The others had also retreated to a distance of over a hundred meters.
The black liquid continued to spew forth, revealing palm-sized creatures that resembled insects, with terrifyingly large pincers.
Most importantly, no one dared to attack them; who knew how fierce their retaliation could be?
In this apocalypse, the most comfortable creatures often turned out to be the fiercest. They possessed immense destructive power and aggression.
This was the way to survive; those creatures that cowered and waited for death had long been eliminated by mutated beings, mutated plants, and zombies.
To stay alive, one had to be more ferocious and ruthless than others.
These insects suddenly spread out and began attacking everything around them.
A dozen unmoving Dump Trucks were parked nearby when suddenly a swarm of insects crawled onto them, and soon they began to feast frantically.
In less than a minute, the Dump Trucks started to shrink, continuously diminishing in size, and even the steel was not spared; everything vanished.
Then, the insects began to spread out.
However, their spreading was not particularly fast; they consumed everything edible in sight.
Of course, they did not eat soil, as it was not on their menu. But rebar and concrete were definitely included in their diet, and surprisingly, the rebar was among their favorites.
The central parts of buildings were supported by rebar. Yet, these insects dug it out and devoured it.
Not to mention the countless shops and residences in the nearby construction. They consumed everything except for soil; nearly everything else was on their menu.
One member of the Construction Team was trying to escape when suddenly his right foot got caught on a stone on the ground.
As he rolled and crawled away, an insect climbed onto his body and burrowed into his flesh.
“Ah!” A wretched howl escaped him, sending chills down the spines of those who heard it. No one dared to look back; they all hurried to flee.
On the ground, that man was overwhelmed by insects crawling into his body, beginning to gnaw at his flesh and bones. Unsurprisingly, the insects favored the organs most of all.
Some robust insects made a beeline for his insides, biting through his abdomen to get inside.
In just a few seconds, he had already breathed his last; there was no sound left of his struggles.
In just a few seconds, a person was devoured completely, leaving not even a bone fragment behind. Then, the swarm continued to spread.
This was a disaster. A terrifying disaster. From the very center of the city, the insects began to expand their reach, gnawing at every building in sight.
Fortunately, the city was undergoing a complete demolition and reconstruction, and the Survivors had already evacuated. They had set up temporary shelters on the outskirts, preparing to relocate while waiting for the Holy City to be completed.
But now, a wave of darkness began to spread.
The higher-ups at the Hope Gathering Place received the news immediately and quickly dispatched Superpowered Individuals to intercept the threat. More Firearms were brought along, and Flamethrowers had become standard equipment; against such creatures, the power of a Flamethrower was formidable.
Of course, Zheng Yifan went along as well, armed and charging to the front lines.
Now, the central area, covering about ten thousand square meters, had transformed into a sea of black.
As Zheng Yifan entered this zone, he suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. The ruins here were reduced to mere rubble. The towering buildings had vanished.
And finally, he came face to face with the culprit.
It was clearly a swarm of cockroaches. To be continued.
