In the Andong International Hotel, over a thousand university students officially became employees of Hope Group, assigned to various rooms based on their individual abilities. Some Administrators, elected automatically, began to take charge of their daily lives.
This was a test, much like how schools assign class leaders. Zheng Yifan always knew how to arrange class officials, but these positions were temporary roles. They needed to perform first, and once Berry's support arrived, a selection process would take place. The principle of survival of the fittest would apply; the capable would remain, while those who fell short would undergo retraining at a lower-level training center.
Managing 9.6 million square kilometers of land required a significant number of talents. Zheng Yifan couldn't handle it all alone; cultivating ten or eight capable individuals here would suffice, along with about a hundred more at the next management level.
It was like scattering pepper across an entire province; as long as certain discipline and rules were maintained, everything would be fine.
Zheng Yifan then planned to conduct large-scale recruitment across the country, organizing officials and employees to start working. With so many people lost, automation was essential.
With Eve around, there was no need to worry too much about technological matters; even in this apocalyptic world, there were still laboratories.
Inside the hotel, Ruo Lan remained vigilant, observing everything around her. She had requested to share a room with Zheng Yifan to ensure the safety of her students.
Zheng Yifan agreed. This woman was indeed obsessive; not even ten bulls could pull her away from her convictions. However, he appreciated such determination in her. Her kind heart had allowed her to establish a fund over the years to help impoverished children—this was true compassion.
Moreover, she was not foolish. Charity wasn't merely about spending her own money; it was about investing every penny in the most impactful areas.
Money begets money; this was the best way to help others. It wasn't about how much one earned but rather how the profits generated by that money could assist more people.
She was a clever woman.
Zheng Yifan had formed an image of Ruo Lan in his mind. Naturally, he harbored no ill intentions; this woman had nearly sealed off her emotions and had yet to emerge from that shadow.
Yet she didn't seem to mind sharing a room with him.
As he looked at her in her thin nightgown after just finishing her shower, Zheng Yifan truly didn't know what to think.
"Don't mind me; I never care about what others think of me, as long as you don't overthink it," Ruo Lan said coldly, her demeanor as frigid as ice. Her gaze constantly scanned Zheng Yifan, as if she had x-ray vision.
"You don't need to be so vigilant. Even Hope Group has its moments of understaffing, especially when a powerful force suddenly expands and needs more manpower. This time, there are only about a thousand people, which is quite few. Once we get your students out, we'll need even more talent—next time it could be in the hundreds of thousands," Zheng Yifan replied with a shrug, extending his right hand to the side.
In the blink of an eye, he pulled out two bags of chips and casually tossed one onto Ruo Lan's bed.
"I didn't know what flavor you liked, so I just grabbed a random one," he said, not even sure what flavor it was as he opened his own bag and began to eat.
Ruo Lan looked at the chips Zheng Yifan had thrown her way and was somewhat surprised. "These are imported from France, right? Lion Legend? They're hard to find domestically."
Without any hesitation, Ruo Lan tore open the packaging and began to indulge herself, showing no signs of ladylike restraint.
Zheng Yifan chuckled; a bag of ordinary chips was quite common on the streets of France. They were local snacks and very popular among consumers. Naturally, he had stocked up on them.
It would be truly foolish to buy domestic chips in bulk while in France. He didn't care much about that; as long as there was something tasty, he would enjoy it.
"If you don't like this flavor, I have others. Feel free to pick whatever you want," he said quietly. Without making a sound, he conjured a suitcase from beside his bed, filled with various snacks.
All of them had been taken from his Storage Space.
Women love snacks; that's a fact. Ruo Lan seemed to enjoy them immensely too. Regardless of whether they were junk food or not, she was savoring what she was eating. Looking at Zheng Yifan, Ruo Lan smiled lightly.
"In the past, I couldn't bear to eat or wear nice things. You have to understand that there were none of these in the orphanage. Once I became a teacher, I had to pay attention to my image and even more so to my figure, so I didn't dare indulge much. But now it's different; I've decided to eat my fill," Ruo Lan said nonchalantly.
However, in Zheng Yifan's ears, if a woman indulged herself like this, it certainly wasn't a good sign. One possibility was that she had truly let go; the other was that she might be on the brink of self-destruction.
"Why is it like this?" Zheng Yifan had to take this seriously. This woman was someone he valued greatly, and it was inevitable that he would arrange a more suitable position for her in the future.
She was a talent, and not overly greedy; she could share the money she earned. What a selfless person she was.
Everyone has their own desires, after all!
Ruo Lan casually replied, "The world is like this now. Every life lost is one less. I don't know why you need so many people, but it's nothing more than inciting war or wanting these students to fight to the death. I can't worry about that much; no matter the reason, I will be at the forefront with these students, ready to die. Since that's the case, what use is having a good physique?"
She then ate a few more potato chips, as if trying to make up for all the food she had missed over the years.
"Hahaha!" Zheng Yifan suddenly burst into laughter. She was right; even if he conscripted those students, they would come. There was no choice; without food meant death. Forget those who could survive—those were lies meant for children. When a person is hungry, they can do anything.
Zheng Yifan looked just like a warlord recruiting students.
But Ruo Lan truly saw through Zheng Yifan.
"Since I want these college students, I never intended to send them to fight. To be honest, our group has combat units with excellent fighting capabilities and plenty of weapons. There's no need to send these rookies who have never touched a gun into battle; they aren't worthy! Do you understand? I only need them to manage ordinary civilians and arrange daily life and routine management tasks." Zheng Yifan could only slowly explain this to Ruo Lan.
If this woman were to work alongside him, it would be more effective than a thousand of his words. (To be continued...)
