Finally entering the Starry Sky Mall, the group of over ten people behind him were still shaken. Just moments ago, they had encountered a massive wave of Zombies, numbering at least in the tens of thousands. Zheng Yifan was unfazed, but for the others, their limit was only a few hundred Zombies; any more than that would be impossible to resist, and they would have to flee.
Each person crouched on the ground, filled only with the joy of survival. As long as they returned alive, they had everything. The supplies they had fought for with their lives were enough to sustain them for more than half a month. If they had to risk their lives again, they might not have the courage to do so. However, since they had already experienced it once, there would surely be a second time.
"Hey! Do you need some food?" the Leader asked as he opened his backpack and pulled out a five-pound bag of rice. This was already the limit he could accept; any more might cost him his life since his own food supply was limited. If he couldn't synchronize with the others, he might not even last until the next time they ventured out.
"No need, I'm not lacking food," Zheng Yifan replied nonchalantly.
The Leader hesitated for a few seconds before finally putting the food back into his pack.
"Hey! It's really strange now; it's been two years without supplies, and there are still people who aren't lacking food. Are you from an alien invasion or something?" A noticeably younger boy behind them mumbled through a mouthful of chocolate.
This was already one of the most important things in this post-apocalyptic world. If it weren't for the fortune they had just made, he definitely wouldn't have dared to eat it.
"Oh? Are there outsiders here? Are there many outsiders in your place?" Zheng Yifan asked as he looked around at the people in the corners. They were all pale and emaciated; although each one claimed to have decent stamina and was ready to go out and make a living at any moment, it was likely that only one in ten still had real combat capability. The rest were just waiting to die.
"Of course! Just a little while ago, a Beautiful Girl came in. She was really stunning; I just wonder which big shot she belongs to!" The Leader said with evident regret as he gazed ahead. Which girl’s friend would open the door for him?
They couldn't open that door themselves; even if they exhausted all their strength to get out, they would be killed by Zombies. But the arrival of that girl gave them hope—a hope to venture out and fight for survival.
"A beautiful girl?" Zheng Yifan scanned his surroundings, suddenly realizing something. Only those from the Hope Gathering Place could enter Deep City. Among those in his Gathering Place, Li Li and An Xiaolu were the most suspicious. Both women had very independent personalities. Although An Xiaolu appeared gentle on the surface, Zheng Yifan could sense her inner passion.
The eruption of honest people is often the most terrifying.
"If a stranger comes to your place, what usually happens?" Zheng Yifan asked seriously.
"Brother, do you know that girl? Let's hurry and find her. If we can save her, we will; if not, we can at least retrieve some supplies. We'll go with you, so don't worry about them not backing down!" The Leader readied his weapon again.
Nearby, the Fellows who had been brazenly flaunting their spoils suddenly changed their expressions, raising their weapons and entering a tense state of readiness.
They were all the best warriors. Zheng Yifan could see that. Even though they were ordinary people in this Post-Apocalypse world, over the two years since the end times began, the Survivors had proven themselves as the best fighters. Those who couldn't fight had already perished; in this brutal competition for survival, those who remained undoubtedly possessed exceptional qualities.
Zheng Yifan nodded. "Thank you all. I truly appreciate it and will repay you in the future."
His lightheartedness was met with nods from them, though they never imagined how significant Zheng Yifan's promise would be within the Hope Gathering Place. A single word from him could elevate someone from hell to heaven or drop them from grace into despair.
His power and influence were the strongest cards he held.
The Leader merely nodded and then led Zheng Yifan and the others into the hall.
Everyone stepped aside to clear a path. Here, anyone brave enough to venture out for food had earned the right to have a passage cleared for them; it was an unspoken agreement among all. Anyone who dared to go out and return was a warrior.
Of course, today was special; they had the most supplies and protection, and no one dared to snatch anything away because doing so would mean everyone would unite to eliminate that rule-breaker.
As Zheng Yifan passed by those on the ground who looked like they were wallowing in mud, he noticed they all clutched weapons—mostly handguns, with an occasional submachine gun—equipment clearly belonging to the police and armed forces. It was evident that there was an Armed Police Corps and a police station nearby. However, that had nothing to do with Zheng Yifan; their weapons seemed too crude for him.
Now, Zheng Yifan appeared as if he were the strongest survivor emerging from the apocalypse, his submachine gun exuding a strong scent of gun oil, with visible bullet chains.
Everything about him signified that Zheng Yifan was definitely not someone to be trifled with.
In stark contrast to An Xiaolu, everyone wished for Zheng Yifan to leave as soon as possible; he was not welcomed at all. Unlike An Xiaolu's calm demeanor, he resembled a demon emerging from hell.
Curled up next to Zheng Yifan, the Survivor tightened his body even more, ready to venture out and earn some money again at any moment.
They had a premonition that this man would once again open the front door, allowing them to make a fortune.
Despite the tens of thousands of Zombies outside the door, if a few hundred dared to go out, they could definitely shake off those Zombies; it was just unclear how many would be lost in the process.
Everyone considered themselves Survivors; no one believed their luck could be that bad.
Zheng Yifan shook his head and walked slowly. They had only desperation left; there was no other hope for survival.
What a tragic situation it was.
"Brother, I've found out that the girl was deceived by Old Tortoise and his gang. That old thing probably has no good plans in mind. We need to be cautious; if that Old Buddy lets his desires take over, who knows what will happen in the end?" The Leader clearly understood Old Tortoise's capabilities, and his face grew serious once more.
"Just tell me what's going on!" Zheng Yifan could tell from the Leader's strained expression that there wouldn't be any good news.
"We'll accompany you on this trip; consider it repaying your life. If we survive, we won't owe you anything anymore," the Leader gritted his teeth and decided to take Zheng Yifan into that den of danger. (To be continued.)
