Quietly waiting in the low building for news from outside, the number of Avatar of the Believers was dwindling rapidly. Almost a hundred thousand Avatar of the Believers were disappearing quickly, and Zheng Yifan dared not take a glance. The fragmented images in his mind only showed some Second-Level Zombie figures.
However, the Second-Level Zombie here was much more formidable. Zheng Yifan was certain that if their numbers were limited, he could easily take them down himself. But if their numbers reached an exaggerated level, even he would struggle against these Zombies.
Zombies, which seemed like ordinary monsters in the past, had undergone multiple transformations now, with the most fundamental change being their elusive presence.
Inside the building, Zheng Yifan moved stealthily. The old newspapers on the floor still reported events from two years ago, occasionally stained with blood and scattered bone fragments—remnants of the pitiful people who had slaughtered each other or fought against Zombies when the apocalypse first struck.
The initial battles were the simplest. Yet it was also when Zombies captured the most prey. At that time, humanity was struggling for survival, with no hope in sight; only those brave enough to fight managed to survive, while cowards perished. The young survived while the elderly died.
Even more brutally, they had to scavenge for resources amidst swarms of Zombies, engaging in fierce confrontations with them.
Such a lifestyle did not guarantee survival.
Zheng Yifan had never experienced that kind of life, nor did he wish to. He only wanted to make a fortune during the apocalypse, to fight fiercely and ideally help more people survive. Ultimately, he aspired to defeat all Zombies and reclaim the land, hoping to prevent the emergence of a third Vitality Era. If he could completely resolve this trouble, it would be a true success.
As time passed, Zheng Yifan's thoughts began to shift.
Two Zombies staggered through the hallway in search of prey. They might have been in this state for several months or even over a year; Deep City had almost entirely become a territory for Zombies. No one could escape their hunting grounds—only a few places might still harbor some Survivors.
After all, in a metropolis with a population of over a hundred million, even if there were few Survivors, someone would inevitably manage to survive by chance.
"Bang! Bang!" Two shots rang out as he swiftly eliminated two Zombies, continuing his advance. Zheng Yifan easily completed his inspection of the entire building. These Zombies were no different from ordinary ones; their combat power was similar and did not match the formidable strength of those on the streets.
Zheng Yifan felt puzzled; these Zombies were clearly stronger than regular ones. But how had they enhanced themselves? It was known that without leveling up, increasing combat power like this could only mean they were special Zombies that had been reinforced.
But which Mutated Zombie has the ability to completely enhance thousands or even tens of thousands of Zombies?
Unless it is the capability of a Giant Mother Zombie. However, that is purely parasitic, unlike enhancement, which is simply an increase in strength. There is also the possibility of further improvement.
The Puppets created by the Giant Mother Zombie are forever limited to Second Tier status; they can no longer be enhanced.
Thus, he developed the Mantis Plant Zombie. Unfortunately, he was killed by Zheng Yifan before he could succeed.
Time and fate play their roles; perhaps in a few months, even ten Zheng Yifans would not stand a chance against a single Giant Mother Zombie—provided that Zheng Yifan's strength does not increase.
Clearing all the Zombies from a building in just over ten minutes would have been considered a fantasy in the past, but now it has become reality. Zheng Yifan made it look effortless, as if it were an assembly line. Every room and every corner had been thoroughly checked. He even took the time to inspect the Sewers.
The sewers no longer reeked; everything inside had been washed clean. Two years of heavy rain had done quite a bit of cleaning in the Sewers as well, but there were no signs of human life on the surface, and the Zombies were almost silent, as if both sides had tacitly agreed to this independent zone.
Zheng Yifan could not know the details, but he could make some guesses. The Sewers in a Post-Apocalypse world are the territory of rats; what have they evolved into after the end of civilization? Zheng Yifan had never seen them, but he could take a guess.
Just half-human-sized rats would be able to consume everything.
The streets still echoed with the presence of Zombies, but their combat power was not enough to eliminate Zombies on a large scale.
Those creatures that had become beasts would experience a decline in reproductive capabilities. Even rats were no exception; their breeding rate was slower than that of humans, leading to severe population control—at most one litter per year. If more than one rat were born, they would be ordinary rats; only when there was just one would a beast appear.
Raising them takes over a year. With so many restrictions, the rat population continued to grow, and their battles against Zombies extended over time.
This fear is likely the reason why Deep City’s Zombies have not spread further.
Zheng Yifan didn't need to worry about much. He quietly hid in the alley, moving slowly, stopping to observe carefully whenever a Zombie showed any unusual behavior.
As time passed, Zheng Yifan began to understand the strange reasons behind the Zombies' strength.
These Zombies were covered in a layer of strange black substance. When he took down a few Zombies, he noticed that this black material seemed to be something naturally formed. However, this substance, which enhanced the Zombies' speed, appeared to be something that the Zombies had developed on their own.
It was not something bestowed upon them by other Zombies.
The Zombies in Mingshen City were likely widely infected with this bizarre power.
In terms of nature, it resembled the shadow powers used by the Chiyou Tribe, though there were significant differences in how that power was utilized.
Zheng Yifan couldn't quite find the right words to describe this phenomenon. There was certainly something peculiar about these Zombies, and that strange type of Zombie must also exist within Deep City.
Zheng Yifan could only continue to track it down, most likely targeting the Zombie that had obtained the Primordial Pearl. One Primordial Pearl had given rise to the terrifying Giant Mother Zombie; thus, it could also create another grotesque Fellow.
He couldn't be sure but had to keep moving forward.
In mid-air, it was as if he were a flying man; Zheng Yifan experimented with movements that the Fellows in post-apocalyptic superhero movies could never accomplish. He tried various poses. Outside, the Zombies were being slaughtered by the Avatar of the Believers. With only First Level and Second-Level Zombies deployed, the Avatar of the Believers could almost be considered capable of easily overpowering them. However, the sheer number of Zombies was overwhelming, making it impossible to eliminate them all completely. (To be continued...)
