The battle raged on, and the Zombies in the darkness seemed to lose their ferocity, as if the very essence of their strength had been drained away. They were not as frenzied as they were during the day.
However, there was no doubt about the power of the Zombies; they were the pride of the apocalypse, the true Rulers of this desolate world, their numbers reaching into the billions.
As the Left Guard continued their assault, a faint dawn began to break in the sky, revealing that the Zombies had become even more densely packed.
All of them were First-Level Zombies; Second-Level Zombies had ceased to appear. A thick layer of green liquid covered the ground, and Zombie Crystal s floated in the air—remnants left behind by fallen Zombies.
The Superpowered Individuals unleashed all their attacks upon the sea of Zombies. The Firearm Espers fired continuously, each one claiming thousands of Zombie lives. With hundreds of Machine Guns at their disposal, they had already taken down hundreds of thousands of Zombies.
But what did it matter? The Zombies did not retreat; in fact, their numbers seemed unchanged. No matter how far one looked, there were always countless heads of Zombies moving restlessly.
"Kill them!" The warriors, now driven to madness, could only let out this final roar before continuing their relentless gunfire. They no longer aimed carefully but sprayed bullets indiscriminately at anything nearby. Along their path, they left countless wounded Zombies in their wake.
The Superpowered Individual with scattering abilities had already withdrawn from the battlefield. His power was formidable; he had already taken down tens of thousands of Zombies. Each bullet he fired was accompanied by ten Vital Energy bullets that followed, compensating for any shortcomings in his attacks with sheer volume.
Taking over his position was a woman.
Yes, she was indeed a woman, but entirely different from Li Li. This woman was not particularly attractive; before the apocalypse, she could have easily been lost in a crowd on the street.
Now she crouched on the city wall, continuously pulling the trigger. Powerful flashes erupted from her weapon as bullets struck the ground below.
Even when hitting a Zombie, its body would not disintegrate but remained on the ground. Gradually, faint red lights began to appear on the ground, followed by flames that spread along those lights. First came a line of fire, then an Inferno engulfed everything around it. The Zombies caught in those flames were consumed and transformed into Zombie Fluid.
Any Zombie within this area shrouded in red light would be eliminated.
The nearby Zombie, engulfed in flames, continued to spread its chaos.
Fire had become the greatest killer of Zombies. The woman slowly sniped at the Zombies, leaving behind bullet marks that formed a fiery path of death. Those who could take on sniper duties from this position were the best among them.
Even though this woman usually lived recklessly, even keeping several male pets, it was the apocalypse now; surviving was already a feat, especially with those pale-faced ones around.
"Kill! Continue the slaughter!" Left Guard commanded, now standing atop the city wall, ready to strike at any moment. The Zombies seemed to be probing attacks, all of them First-Level Zombies. Not a single Second-Level Zombie was in sight; it was as if they were merely testing the waters without any substantial assault.
"What are these Zombies doing? Do they intend to take Ruiguan with just First-Level Zombies?" Left Guard asked in confusion.
The two Messengers beside him looked grim. Both possessed the observation Superpower and were currently using military binoculars to survey the battlefield. One Superpowered Individual could transform his entire vision into a bird's-eye view for more accurate observation. The other Superpowered Individual was relatively ordinary, but his ordinary was anything but typical. He could double his visual range. While others could only see within a kilometer, even a Superpowered Individual would see distant figures as mere dots. But he was different; he could clearly discern whether a Zombie several kilometers away was male or female.
Now, he spotted danger: about two thousand meters away, there was a horde of Zombies—around sixty or seventy of them—but these Zombies were not like the others; they were lying motionless on top of a massive Zombie.
However, that giant Zombie was moving toward the city wall.
By dawn, it would reach about a kilometer away; with that bulk, even a kilometer would be within striking range.
Of course, this range also fell within the shooting distance of the Firestorm Team members.
They could accurately target anything within that range.
Fortunately, outside Ruiguan lay an expanse of grassland with few pits and hollows, except for a dilapidated temporary camp in the northern area where those poor Fellows were trembling in fear, hoping the Zombies wouldn’t seek them out.
Little did they know that a horde of over a hundred Zombies had already passed right before their eyes.
They simply hadn't gone looking for trouble with them.
"Report, Chief. There are large Zombies approximately 000 meters away, carrying sixty-seven abnormal Zombies. They are expected to arrive around five in the morning. Should we send someone to intercept?" Messenger said.
He then relayed the information back to headquarters, allowing Zheng Yifan and the others to analyze the news.
But soon, an unhappy voice came through.
"The Chief has already set off for Ruiguan, accompanied by all members of the Guard Camp." The call was abruptly ended, and it was clear that Han Rui on the other end was quite angry.
Zheng Yifan had been in continuous combat, and before he could even rest, he was directly involved in the battle at Ruiguan.
They had analyzed the battle at Ruiguan, concluding that combat would begin once the losses of the Low-Level Zombies exceeded the tolerance limit of the Zombies, at which point those special Zombies would be deployed to the battlefield.
The gap between cannon fodder and a formal army was enormous.
Unfortunately, Zheng Yifan did not heed their advice and, dragging his weary body, boarded an Armored Transport Vehicle heading to the front lines.
The other warriors were also exhausted but still followed Zheng Yifan. If the Chief wasn't resting, how could they indulge in comfort?
"Prepare the Burning Plan. If the Zombies send those big ones up, activate all flame-throwing devices immediately," said Left Guard, surveying the battlefield. The pressure was manageable everywhere, but that didn't mean those special Zombies couldn't surprise them. He aimed to minimize any unexpected occurrences.
The Burning Plan was a fire attack strategy for the entire Rui Guan City Wall, designed to bury most of the Zombies in flames. After preparing mechanisms throughout winter, they were finally ready to launch their offensive.
On the battlefield, flames raged fiercely. What was happening with the Low-Level Zombies? They remained the primary attacking force of the Zombies. They had absolute numbers, which hadn't been apparent at the beginning of the siege. However, as combat continued into around three o'clock, the warriors on the wall finally began to feel pressure because waves of Zombies were piling up beneath them. Even though some of those Zombies had fallen and left behind clothing and debris at the base of the wall, it added up over time. A large number of Zombies fell but did not turn into liquid; instead, they piled up there, gasping for their last breaths but refusing to die.
At the entrance of Main City under Ruiguan, a Zombie staggered towards the city gate. He was one of the Lucky Ones, having dashed through a hail of bullets and dodged various Superpowers, but now his misfortune had arrived. A leg of a nearby Zombie, crippled by gunfire, pressed against his knee, causing him to tumble forward. His neck was nearly crushed by another Zombie behind him, yet his body had already reached the corner of the city wall, where no attacks could reach him.
As long as he could continue to crawl, he could stretch out his hand to grasp at those humans who were utterly out of reach.
However, what followed was a nightmare. A Zombie behind him stepped on his body, causing him to slide and fall again.
The Zombies that followed seemed like a chaotic mob, resembling a domino effect. One by one, they collapsed at Ruiguan's base, and since they were all tightly packed against the city wall and not under attack, other Zombies could step onto their bodies to gain height.
Slowly, the staircase of Zombies grew higher and spread further. It resembled a mountain of corpses forming beneath Ruiguan. These Zombies trampled over their fallen kin without any emotion and lunged at the warriors on the city wall. They were either taken down by the warriors in front or continued to fall onto other Zombies, becoming stepping stones for others.
More and more Zombies gathered beneath Ruiguan, forming a massive mound that allowed them to surge upward.
This was something no one had anticipated. The Firearm Espers pressed down on their weapons in hopes of shooting them down. But it was futile; there were simply too many Zombies—kill one, and two would take its place; kill a hundred, and a thousand would come. It was an endless cycle.
Zombies continued to step on the heads of those in front as they advanced.
The wall made of Zombies grew taller and taller. Initially ignored, now if a Zombie jumped up, it could extend its Claw over the city wall. More Zombies kept coming forward, with those on the ground multiplying rapidly.
"This absolutely cannot continue! The real battle hasn't even begun; we can't initiate the Burning Plan this early! But how do we proceed with the upcoming fight?" The Left Guard was drenched in sweat from worry.
Meanwhile, the warriors on the battlefield had begun using their Superpower life-saving techniques.
A Superpowered Individual wielding fire Superpower unleashed flames beneath Ruiguan to reduce the number of Zombies, while other Superpowered Individuals also did their best to decrease the accumulation of Zombies.
On the city wall, the Left Guard was filled with anger! Why did Pu Qiang's Fellow possess such powerful Superpower while his own Superpower leaned more towards defense?
Just as he was feeling troubled, unusual movements appeared on the city wall. A large number of bombs were thrown out—these were Molotov Cocktails, which wouldn't be significantly restricted by Vital Energy. However, this meant that the flames could only burn the Zombies outside and couldn't reach those below; it merely added fuel to the existing fire.
If they wanted to eliminate these Zombies, they would need to come up with another plan.
Gradually, the warriors on the battlefield were no longer confined to resisting on the city wall. A dozen close-combat Superpowered Individuals carried Oil Drums onto the battlefield, followed by a series of flames. The Oil Drums ignited, resulting in violent explosions that pushed the corpses of the Zombies aside.
More Superpowered Individuals charged forward, using their Super Ability Attacks against those in front and below them. The Zombies on the ground had no chance to resist; most were trampled as they lunged forward, unable to get back up.
The Superpowered Individuals could slaughter them at will, and gradually they began to realize the benefits. The Zombies lay on the ground, and those with telekinetic abilities shamelessly focused on tearing at the Zombie Crystal s on the Zombies' necks.
The Zombie Crystal s of First-Level Zombies were unstable and could be easily pulled off with telekinesis. Ordinary people used long spears to poke at the Zombies below.
Meanwhile, Firearm Espers continued to attack the Zombies with Machine Guns. However, their firing angles had tilted to 45 degrees, clearing a large safe zone amidst the mountain of corpses. The Superpowered Individuals moved up to eliminate the Zombies while others continued to surge upward.
They cleared several meters of corpses before becoming cannon fodder again.
Wearing Plate Armor, they were not afraid of leg injuries; a Zombie's bite couldn't penetrate their armor. Even if they were contaminated by the virus from a Zombie, they would no longer be harmed by the Zombie Virus.
Humans had officially gained the strength to wrestle with Zombies only after becoming Superpowered Individuals.
"Legion Commander, should we start the Burning Plan? It's already lit, and those Zombies are coming up," said a Messenger beside the Left Guard.
The Left Guard nodded and glanced at his watch.
Zheng Yifan was almost there; everything needed to move quickly. Given the leader's anxious temperament, it was inevitable that they would have to engage in battle outside soon.
"Begin executing the plan." With that single command, it was as if a beast from hell had been unleashed. The Messengers finally began their mission, relaying orders down the line, and all the logistics teams of Ruiguan swiftly activated the Gate.
On the walls of the newly constructed fortifications, oil spouts erupted, followed by torrents of flames that engulfed the ground. The already fiery sea of Zombies was instantly transformed into an Inferno.
Even more terrifying was the fact that the previously dug Underground Pipeline was now discharging a massive amount of fuel. The flamethrowers atop the Flame Tower operated at maximum capacity, turning Ruiguan into a vast Inferno.
What was even more excessive was that they had prepared large quantities of livestock blood. This blood flowed down the walls, staining Ruiguan with a vivid hue of crimson.
The Zombies caught the scent of blood and lost all sense of reason, driven solely by their hunger.
Even though the Zombie Leader controlled a significant number of Zombies, those ordinary cannon fodder still rushed forward to meet their demise.
Within ten minutes, Ruiguan had become a sea of Inferno, flames claiming the lives of the Zombies. The Superpowered Individuals retreated to the second line, entering the Gathering Place to rest.
The flames could only last for two or three hours, as the area covered was simply too vast.
At the end of the pipeline, over a thousand meters away, lay the true target area for unleashing Inferno. (To be continued)
