"Swish!" The speed of the Lightning Zombie was absolutely astonishing, its muscles entirely enhanced for speed. The Zombie Crystal on the back of its neck was indented, but it had not fully penetrated into the protective tissue.
It was as if this Zombie had been born solely for the purpose of speed. However, Zheng Yifan found it far more challenging to face this creature than a Third Stage strength-type Zombie, with a significantly higher risk of injury.
The team consisted entirely of Superpowered Individuals who were not afraid of minor viral infections, but what about ordinary people? If they were merely scratched, death would be their inevitable fate.
They could even end up worse than dead, becoming a Zombie themselves and hunting down their own kind.
The battle continued. Zheng Yifan used his Adamantium Shield to block the advance of the Lightning Zombie.
Nearby, Li Ning had already begun to restrict its movements. Other Superpowered Individuals also redirected their powers to assist.
There were too many Zombies behind them; even if they managed to kill a few, it would only be a small fraction. It was better to deal with the immediate threat first to avoid any comrades falling in battle.
Today's objective was to eliminate Zombies without sustaining injuries and to take down as many high-level Zombies as possible, not to serve as food for them.
"Tap tap tap!" Suddenly, a fierce sound of machine gun fire erupted beside Zheng Yifan. A glance revealed it was Li Li. However, Li Li now appeared much more serious; instead of firing continuously, she was taking aimed shots with her Machine Gun. Each bullet struck the speed-type Zombie, followed by a series of rapid shots targeting the joints of its legs.
Those joints had been weak points during human times and remained so even after transformation into a Zombie. The basic structure of humanity had not completely changed.
Unless it had transformed into that strange spherical creature in the distance.
"Tap tap!" Suddenly, two bullets struck the same spot in quick succession. The Zombie leaning against an Armored Transport Vehicle suddenly had its joint shattered and stumbled in mid-air.
It might have only been for a fraction of a second, but that was enough for Zheng Yifan. Seizing the opportunity, he thrust his Silver Spear fiercely, the power surging as it pierced through the Zombie's throat. The spear tip emerged from the back.
The Silver Spear had immense lethality, and although Zheng Yifan's current strength was suppressed, he still managed to perfectly dominate the speed-type Zombies.
As long as he could hit them, these speed-type Zombies were quite fragile, provided that he could restrict their speed; otherwise, they would surely overwhelm him.
In just under five minutes of fierce fighting, the Zombies behind were closing in fast. The formation that had originally resembled a long snake had transformed into an ancient V-shaped formation. On both sides, Firearm Espers reduced the Zombies' attacking speed, blocking wave after wave of them. Other Superpowered Individuals picked off those Zombies that managed to catch up, as well as the oddly shaped ones. They often exhibited distinct characteristics that set them apart.
Finding such creatures among the horde of Zombies was indeed challenging, but it was no problem for Zheng Yifan's subordinates. Above them, Zhou Rui served as an excellent radar, with mist continuously forming within the Zombie crowd. Following the mist's guidance allowed them to locate those peculiar Zombies.
Unfortunately, there were simply too many Zombies. They could not achieve perfect kills.
The Zombies behind them had gradually spread across the entire plain. As far as the eye could see, countless Zombie heads filled the horizon. In the distance, Zheng Yifan spotted several large Fellows moving slowly, each about five or six meters tall. There were even more Zombies beyond them, vast and boundless. In the far-off sky, he noticed a few dark spots and believed that since Zombies could evolve to survive in water and take on semi-aquatic forms, they would eventually learn to fly; how exactly they would evolve remained unknown.
Clang! The convoy gradually escaped onto the highway, which had already been cleared as a retreat route. All obstacles on the road had been removed, and even the dirt paths leading onto the highway had been paved.
Now that the vehicles surged onto the highway, they could see dozens of trenches on the plain behind them—trenches dug by Zheng Yifan's advancing teams. They were now filled with gasoline. Although there were only enough supplies for a few dozen tankers, it represented all that Hope Gathering Place could muster; any additional resources were not worth investing due to the overwhelming number of Zombies. In such a wide and damp area, using fire was merely a means to slow down the Zombie advance.
It was unrealistic to hope that a single fire would eliminate them.
Once on the highway, all vehicles increased their distance from one another and simultaneously floored the gas pedals. The roar of engines sounded like a stampede of horses as they reached maximum RPMs, racing away at breakneck speed. Only here could they shake off the Zombies; however, there was still over ten miles to go ahead. This distance allowed for several sniper operations as long as they didn't attract too many Lightning Zombies.
Meanwhile, in the direction of Ruiguan, Left Guard watched Grave Pit with excitement.
This was a slaughter channel prepared by Hope Gathering Place to attract those Zombies from the Sewers. It had now expanded significantly; the Underground Passage was intricate and complex, drawing in Zombies from throughout the city while restricting their height. Those oddly shaped and massive monsters couldn't enter; even Third Stage strength-type Zombies found it quite difficult to navigate through.
At this moment, the Left Guard watched with delight as Zombies continued to emerge and be slaughtered. Sun Jiang stood behind the Left Guard, drenched in sweat, while the ground was already piled high with woven bags filled with Concentration and Zombie Fluid.
From the beginning until now, all that had come in were First Level Ordinary Zombies. However, their sheer numbers compensated for their lack of quality. The excess First Level Zombie Crystal s were also quite useful, and moreover, those corpse fluids were valuable as well.
But the greatest benefit for the Left Guard was the release of pressure from the overwhelming number of Zombies.
Ruiguan was not comparable to Jiang; one was a perilous area while the other was a man-made wall, entirely different in nature. Jiang had effectively locked down the Zombies to the north, making it difficult for them to launch an attack.
As for Ruiguan? As long as they could break through the barriers, it was possible. Although there were scattered Gathering Places that weakened the Zombies' assaults, their numbers remained terrifying.
Even more deadly was that the Wilderness Gathering Place lay across vast plains, which had already become an economic center.
Thus, the Hope Gathering Place naturally established a corpse-drawing team, using blood provided by Zheng Yifan to attract Zombies towards Ruiguan. The Wilderness Gathering Place required traversing a long stretch of desolate land; while not absolutely safe, it was relatively secure. The Zombies lacked the intelligence to specifically search for the Wilderness Gathering Place, making that barren land an excellent shield.
Conversely, the Zombies drawn over posed significant pressure on the Flame Legion. While First Level Zombies might not breach the walls, Second Level Zombies had climbing capabilities, and Third Stage Zombies could cause violent destruction.
Currently, the Left Guard aimed to reduce the number of Low-Level Zombies; every little bit helped.
In the Grave Pit, there was a massive pit spanning thousands of square meters, with countless passages continuously spewing forth Zombies. At the very center of the Grave Pit lay a Blood Pool filled with dozens of tons of livestock blood, constantly attracting Zombies. In various passages, fine streams of blood flowed along grooves into these pits, drawing in more Zombies.
The surrounding walls were equipped with numerous flame-throwing devices and even self-destruct mechanisms. The warriors of the Flame Legion needed to use elevators to enter; each elevator could accommodate hundreds of people at once. There were several such elevators, each equipped with fixed Flamethrowers.
These were the best tools for dealing with Low-Level Zombies.
Now, over a thousand warriors were fighting against Zombies in the Grave Pit. They wielded their Superpowers and weapons, clad in full armor, showing little fear of being infected by the Zombie Virus. The battle served to hone their skills.
Several Second-Stage Espers stood ready to rescue anyone in need.
Flamethrowers were on standby to block any breaches.
After the lessons learned from the Howling Wind Gathering Place, the Grave Pit at the Hope Gathering Place was exceptionally fortified. Even if Ruiguan fell, this place could not be breached. There were multiple layers of defense in case of emergencies.
"Legion Commander, we are gradually spotting Zombies appearing beneath Ruiguan. These fellows really can't stand being idle; now that it has warmed up a bit, they have come out," joked an old warrior beside the Left Guard, who had once been a Butcher.
He was one of the original Butchers, nicknamed Skullbreaker, known for being the cheapest Fellow back then.
Now, he had become a legitimate Second-Stage Esper. In terms of Superpower strength, he was on par with the Left Guard, though they focused on different aspects. The Left Guard was more versatile, but when it came to dealing with Zombies, he was clearly more formidable due to his ability to manipulate fire—specifically, intense flames.
Standing there, he bore the responsibility of protecting all the warriors in the Grave Pit. If an uncontrollable situation arose, he would be the first to charge in.
"Everyone needs to hold on; the battle isn't over yet. There will be even more fights ahead. Just because there haven't been any Zombies out during winter doesn't mean all humans have emerged; that's just an illusion. Now that spring has arrived, do you think those Zombies will let this opportunity slip by?" The Left Guard's lips twitched slightly.
"What we've seen today is just the beginning; many more Zombie attacks are on their way. Don't rush; the battle is endless. How many Zombies are there in the world? Hundreds of billions! You could fight your entire life and still not kill them all." Although the Left Guard smiled, everyone knew the heavy burden he carried on his shoulders. (To be continued)
