What happened in the factory was merely a brief interlude, soon to be forgotten by most. However, one person who would not forget was Old Wang, the former Foreman. His face was filled with rage as he glared at the few individuals before him—several Second-Stage Espers whose primary abilities were restraint and limitation.
Their superpowers were not suited for direct combat, but they could still detain ordinary Superpowered Individuals.
When Old Hou reviewed Old Wang's records, he was surprised to find that the documentation indicated he was an ordinary person rather than a Superpowered Individual. This raised questions; someone in a high position could certainly find ways to earn a bottle of Essence. To reach the position of Deputy Factory Director at the Clothing Factory required not only talent but also considerable strength, as the factory produced items used by Superpowered Individuals.
Upon further investigation, it became clear that Zhou Tie's Doghead Strategist had been this Fellow, and now they were naturally beginning to hunt him down.
Unfortunately, in front of the several Superpowered Individuals, Old Wang's fury suddenly turned into a sorrowful laugh. He shook his hands in the air, and his figure dissipated into thin air, leaving only a faint green hue behind.
The green gas entered the bodies of the Superpowered Individuals and immediately triggered mutations. They felt as if they were poisoned—dizzy and weak in their limbs—ultimately having no choice but to retreat hastily.
By the time Zheng Yifan received the news, Old Wang had already vanished without a trace, making it impossible to track him down.
However, since yesterday, intermittent poisoning incidents had begun to occur within the Gathering Place. It wasn't Old Wang who was spreading poison there; rather, it was a terrifying toxin similar to a Plague that was gradually spreading.
Research conducted by the Hope Gathering Laboratory concluded that this was a method employed by Superpowered Individuals. The Plague was caused by mutated Vital Energy. To resolve the Plague, it would be necessary to eliminate the Superpowered Individual responsible for releasing the toxin. Otherwise, they would have to use even greater power to expel these viruses.
Almost all combatants in the Gathering Place were mobilized to investigate this matter thoroughly. Ordinary people within the Gathering Place wore masks, and the air was filled with the scent of disinfectant.
Although their efforts seemed like a drop in the bucket, everyone persisted in doing what they could. Surviving in this apocalypse was already difficult enough; no one wanted to die just as life began to improve.
Sadly, there were still casualties. The virus posed little threat to Superpowered Individuals but was deadly for ordinary humans.
The death toll rose to 47, forcing Zheng Yifan to initiate a manhunt for Old Wang.
On the highway near Jiang's location in the Gathering Place, Zheng Yifan rode his Future Pioneer motorcycle, surveying every inch of land. Behind him rode Li Ning on an even more imposing motorcycle—a military model from the Post-Apocalypse era. Its powerful engine made it more suitable for combat. His weapons were strapped onto his bike, continuously drawing in strong air currents to reduce drag. The speed was exponentially faster than before.
The area they searched was countless times larger than others', patrolling along the perilous banks of Jiang where few dared to venture.
Along these banks, unexpected dangers lurked; it was one of the most treacherous places near the Gathering Place.
The mysterious Hope Gathering Place was simply not a place for exploration. Not even Zheng Yifan had the qualifications to venture there. This was the Human Forbidden Zone.
Yet, it was precisely the best hiding spot for criminals; no one wanted to patrol here.
Even the warriors guarding the river would not pay attention to this area, for no one could cross it.
Except for those special Superpowered Individuals. Like Old Wang.
At that moment, Old Wang was hiding along the riverbank. Although life here lacked the luxury of the Hope Gathering Place, his thirst for revenge burned fiercely within him.
If Old Wang had any weakness, it was his foolish son, his heart's treasure, whom he would never allow to come to harm. Before the apocalypse, he had already smoothed over countless matters for his son.
After the apocalypse, things remained unchanged. However, Old Wang's influence allowed him to maintain a powerful backing; he could use A-Level Essence like an aphrodisiac, something others could only dream of.
Now that his son was dead, Old Wang had gone mad with grief.
The entire Hope Gathering Place was engulfed in Plague. Old Wang could not leave; otherwise, his revenge would come to an end.
He could not forgive. In his heart, his son was above all else; nothing mattered more than him.
Only he knew that he was getting old. Even after becoming a Superpowered Individual, certain abilities had yet to recover. His woman could only perform her seductive acts before him.
Old Wang could only ravage those women like a madman; he lacked the ability to find true satisfaction and could only vent his beastly desires in this way.
Like father, like son—Young Master Wang had also fallen into this habit and even enjoyed his father's women, ultimately facing dire consequences at the hands of Li Ning.
There are three forms of unfilial behavior, and having no descendants is the worst. This was a belief instilled in Old Wang since childhood in the mountains. Now that his son was gone, it felt as if the world had collapsed around him.
The first thing that came to mind was to use his Superpower to save his son. But after a moment of reflection, he dismissed that thought; he didn't even know where his son's body lay—he couldn't find it anywhere.
Even if it were just severed limbs, if he could reach Old Hou in the Gathering Place, there might still be a chance to bring him back!
Old Wang truly witnessed Old Hou reattach the arm of a person who had been severed.
Although the person had lost his arm for less than half an hour, under Old Hou's hands, it was quickly restored, and perfectly intact.
But now, his only hope was gone, leaving only the raging fire that burned in his chest and soul, a fire that would never cease.
Struggling and furious, his once kind face began to twist in anger, and his body trembled irregularly with superpower. There was a noticeable dissipation of superpower emanating from him.
Beside him was a wide stone passage; this was the drainage pipe of the Hope Gathering Place, where all the wastewater from the Gathering Place flowed into the river.
Fortunately, human domestic wastewater no longer contained as many industrial products. Although everyday chemical toiletries still harmed the environment, the situation had improved significantly. The surface only bore excrement and some domestic wastewater, which still looked relatively new. These wastewaters poured into the river without revealing their presence.
However, it was still a sewer, and the smell was far from pleasant. Yet Old Wang remained there; when the stench enveloped him, it felt as if he were completely absorbed by a force, which then transformed into the power of Plague.
Old Wang had once been an ordinary toxin, but after making up his mind and going mad, he began to strengthen himself in this disgusting way. It was a grotesque evolution; he abandoned what could have been a bright future as a toxin and became the current Plague, targeting humans primarily. Zombies were indifferent to any Plague, but corrosive gas toxins could still take down Zombies.
Unfortunately, Old Wang no longer had that capability. However, the Zombies also had no chance to kill him now.
Old Wang now resembled a collective of viruses; his body appeared translucent and ethereal. Occasionally, when sunlight brushed past him, one could even see his transparent form.
He had absorbed the filth from the drainage pipe and transformed himself into the pathogen of Plague.
As the moonlight dimmed slightly, he floated outward almost without touching the ground.
Behind him, although the Underground Pipeline was new, it left behind patches of green where Old Wang lingered; droplets of green liquid emitted a foul odor and left strong corrosive stains like sulfuric acid.
Further inside, not even an insect could be found; those insects no longer inhabited these places they once favored.
The darkness in the air could not hinder Old Wang's Plague radiation; when night fell, it marked the time for mass reproduction of the Plague virus.
This was also Old Wang's most painful moment; his figure slowly drifted above the river as green streams wafted towards the Hope Gathering Place, with only his grim face and pained groans remaining visible.
Saliva slowly dripped from the corner of his mouth, mixed with the powder from his ground teeth, which had been ground down to the limit by the overwhelming power of the Superpowered Individual. His reinforced teeth felt like two hard pieces of metal grinding against each other, leaving behind faint white marks.
A large amount of green gas fermented in the air, becoming more intense as it gradually spread throughout the Hope Gathering Place.
The Plague generated could not cover all areas of the Hope Gathering Place; it was fully concentrated in the Main City Area, where the population was highest. The Plague could quickly spread among them. While there might only be dozens of deaths now, once it fully spread and fermented, the death toll would inevitably rise exponentially, ultimately leading to disaster.
The instigator, Old Wang, felt his body growing lighter as his Superpower was rapidly depleted.
In the river, countless fish stared at Old Wang with their bulging eyes, ready to attack at any moment. Only when Old Wang drove the Plague out of the river did they close their eyes and curl back into hiding.
In the river, they were undoubtedly the rulers. If Old Wang posed even a slight threat to the River Tribe, those aquatic overlords would surely erase him from existence with extreme force.
As for now, those lazy creatures had no time to bother with Old Wang, who had nearly exhausted all his Superpower.
Meanwhile, near the river in the Wheat Field, three people began to set up a tent. Two of them had already started preparing dinner—or more accurately, setting up a table—while the third person had vanished without a trace. However, the remaining two believed that if they waited a little longer, they would soon enjoy a grand feast.
They were Zheng Yifan and his companions, while the extra person was Zhou Rui, who could transform into mist.
With him monitoring from above, their exploration speed increased severalfold. (To be continued)
