The wind swirled with yellow sand, spinning in the air for a few moments before gently drifting down, unsure of where it would land. Within Ruiguan, the grass was lush and green; although autumn had arrived, the desolation had not yet set in.
On the busy highway, a group of over a dozen people was repairing the road. Without industrial machinery, they relied on manual labor to ensure the passage remained open.
Groups of explorers passed through the highway, hunting Zombies, which were a rare source of wealth for them.
Meanwhile, several large teams had already begun to set their sights on the resort; that was where the real bounty lay.
The leader, Zheng Yifan, had recently issued a mission that offered double rewards for any Zombies hunted within the resort's vicinity. Although they would waste several hours traveling and endure some hardships, their efforts would yield twice the usual rewards. Moreover, the resort was an area yet to be conquered, filled with countless resources. The amenities of several high-end hotels were particularly tempting. These items required no transportation; they simply needed to affix their team's special stickers, and once conquered, rewards would be granted directly.
All that was needed was for one team member to record everything with a camera while placing a few fixed cameras around the perimeter.
No one would find this troublesome; it was merely a matter of raising a hand.
Additionally, they had a special reward—five carnivorous plants—as recognition for their assistance in maintaining order during the Rebels' uprising and quelling the rebellion.
These plants were their private property and held significant value. They could cultivate their own Essence while conquering Zombies at the resort, enabling their team to produce Superpowered Individuals.
This decision came about when Zheng Yifan met with the Ice King Squad; he realized that it wasn't enough for only the main warriors of Gathering Place to grow stronger. The explorers also needed opportunities to rise and gain power.
Most importantly, rewards were distributed in favor of maintaining Gathering Place's team.
Everyone in Gathering Place, except for the elderly and weak, mobilized with weapons to eliminate Zombies and return for food.
Only the old, weak, and some timid individuals remained at Gathering Place to assist, while women also took on roles as hunters.
In this post-apocalyptic world, gender mattered little; everyone had to contribute their share of strength. Underestimating women could lead to dire consequences because they had survived through challenges far greater than those faced by men and were often more ruthless.
An old saying rings true: "The green bamboo snake has no poison in its mouth; the yellow wasp's sting is not deadly; but both pale in comparison to a woman's heart."
Throughout history, countless heroes have fallen at the hands of women.
Meanwhile, Zheng Yifan was training alone in the center of the military camp's Training Ground, honing his Shooting Skill.
Others trained their Shooting Skills according to battle formations, but he was different; he focused on honing his one-on-one combat abilities.
The Lin Family Spear Technique emphasized thrusting, and Zheng Yifan inherited the most lethal assassination techniques.
However, when faced with a horde of Zombies, he found it impossible to take on a hundred by himself. Even when surrounded by a few First-Level Zombies, he had to exert all his strength to fend them off.
Now, he was practicing the Sweeping Technique from his Shooting Skill.
Around him were twenty targets perfectly arranged in a circle, with him at the center. His goal was to fire a single shot that would sweep through all twenty targets, hitting each one in the neck.
This was incredibly difficult. It required immense power because the Shooting Skill he inherited was designed for humans; a cut to the throat would result in death. But Zombies were different; slicing their throats felt like merely breaking the skin of a human—there was no real effect.
Only by breaking their cervical vertebrae could he kill them.
The concept was simple, but reality was harsh. After an entire week of practice, he had made little progress; he could only break the necks of three Zombies with a single shot.
If he used thrusting techniques, it would only take a light poke to deal with three Zombies.
However, his lethality was limited to what lay before him; he couldn't defend against attacks from behind at all.
"Boss! Good news!" A new recruit shouted loudly at the entrance of the military camp while riding a bicycle.
He had a huge backpack slung over his back, bulging with who knows what inside.
Upon hearing the voice, Zheng Yifan swept his weapon with great effort, knocking down five targets. Then, as his gun barrel flicked in mid-air, several more targets fell, each marked with a hole in the throat area.
"Damn it! I should just stick to thrusting; this sweeping technique is totally unsuitable for me!" Zheng Yifan cursed angrily and wiped the sweat from his brow as he walked toward the new recruit on the bicycle.
For this past week, this new recruit had been taking care of him. Without any airs of being a Big Shot, he had always carried himself with humility, even while overseeing the lives and deaths of thousands.
He had never let success go to his head because he knew that even a moment's carelessness could lead to death.
"Boss! The Essence Fruit has ripened! I brought you all the fruits!" The new recruit panted as he handed over the backpack to Zheng Yifan, as if he had completed some sacred mission.
"Great! That's wonderful! Head back to the Logistics Office to collect some Military Merit as your reward." Zheng Yifan took the backpack and casually opened it.
The terrifying carnivorous flower had produced such a bizarre fruit.
In Zheng Yifan's hand, the fruit resembled eight bananas, with the only difference being that the outer layer was much harder, akin to a nut.
"Do you know how to use this thing?" Zheng Yifan asked the new recruit beside him, puzzled.
"According to what I've heard, the essence is inside the shell. I haven't seen it myself; the carnivorous flower fruits from the Gathering Place are sent to you as soon as they ripen," the recruit replied, curiously eyeing the strange fruit.
This was the fruit that could give rise to incredibly powerful Superpowered Individuals. They had all experienced the might of a Superpowered Individual before; the speed of a Light Fist was astonishing.
Even more terrifying was Old Ghost, who was practically invisible.
During that battle, he had taken a punch from a Light Fist. Even though it struck his shield, it sent him flying over ten meters and left him unconscious for an entire minute before he finally regained consciousness, feeling dazed for quite some time afterward.
And this was just collateral damage. Just taking one punch, while others who were targeted suffered serious injuries, with several even sustaining fractures.
"Pop!" He lightly tapped the fruit with the tip of his gun, creating a small crack no bigger than a needle's eye.
Then Zheng Yifan shuddered and said to the recruit, "I need to go study this thing in the Military Tent. No one is allowed to disturb me."
After giving his stern orders, Zheng Yifan entered the tent with the fruit.
This was the most important Inner Warehouse in the entire military camp's Logistics Warehouse. Unless permitted, no one was allowed inside; no one knew how many things were stored within.
Every time supplies arrived, they came in black trucks covered with tarps and then left again. No one knew what was inside or how much there was.
All of this was classified; only items transported to the external warehouse each week were recorded in military logs.
Now, Zheng Yifan had entered the inner warehouse.
It was absolutely secure; no one would dare to enter.
He wanted to see if his discovery was indeed correct.
It should be noted that Essence comes in different grades.
Level 1 Essence belongs to the activation category. It can activate an individual's Superpower.
Levels 2 through 9 Essence belong to the upgrading category. They can upgrade the level of a Superpowered Individual.
However, the gap between Level 1 Essence is enormous, not reflected in power but in the success rate of its use.
The Essence refined from the carnivorous flower has a success rate of only 0%, making it the lowest grade of Essence. Consuming it directly may not even reach a 5% success rate, and it can only be used by those desperate enough. Loyal subordinates cannot bear such a terrifying failure rate.
Even when using the refined Essence, nearly one in five individuals might luck out and gain a Superpower, while the other four would meet their demise without a trace.
However, just as Zheng Yifan opened the fruit of the carnivorous flower, a message appeared in his mind.
"Discovered guiding Zombie energy essence, collectively referred to as Essence, automatically refined, grade e, success rate 0%. It is not recommended for the host to use. Forcible use may trigger Time-Space Barrier Rejection, resulting in the loss of all dimensional abilities."
"Discovered E-Rank Essence. Introduction to Time-Space Barrier auxiliary abilities: Using Time-Space Barrier to refine Essence, five portions can be exchanged for one portion of A-Level Essence, with a 100% success rate for activating advanced Superpower. Additionally, 10,000 Zombie Crystal s can be exchanged for one portion of S-Class Essence, significantly increasing the chances of activating advanced Superpower. Zero portions of E-Rank Essence and 100,000 Zombie Crystal s can be exchanged for one portion of SS-Level Essence, with a 100% success rate for activating advanced Superpower." The introduction was lengthy, followed by a detailed description of various aspects of Superpower, including classifications.
The classification of Superpower is no longer limited to ordinary categories. The Nature System, enhancement category, and others are included, while two additional categories are more peculiar.
The Mind System and Support Class.
These two systems have not appeared before the public eye. Even healers are essentially part of the Nature System, not truly belonging to the Support Class.
The Mind System studies the power of the mind, focusing on the soul and possessing strange attack methods; however, against Zombies, its abilities are significantly weakened.
As for the Support Class, as the name suggests, they lack direct offensive power. Their definition lies not in warfare but in daily life. For example, blacksmiths.
This was once a very ancient profession, but possessing the Support Class Blacksmith-related Superpower would allow one to forge weapons that surpass all technology, wielding terrifying power.
Among the examples, the one that Zheng Yifan was most optimistic about was a Support Class Superpower known as Formation Master.
A force with a Formation Master could use mountains, rivers, and even plants to set up powerful formations. When faced with an attack, they could activate these formations to enhance the defensive advantages.
They may not be as magical as depicted in stories, but they possess formidable defensive capabilities. The shields they create are akin to energy barriers; only by breaking through the energy barrier can one attack those inside.
The most practical aspect is their anti-air capabilities. The introduction of an anti-air formation can render all flying creatures incapable of flight, preventing aerial ambushes. Even the height of jumps is strictly limited.
In this future of the apocalypse, warriors among ordinary people can only deal with Low-Level Zombies. Only those who awaken their Superpowers can become the rulers of tomorrow.
Currently, the position of ruler in the Hope Gathering Place is firmly held by Zheng Yifan. He can refine an A-Level Essence to evolve someone into a Superpowered Individual.
As for the candidates, Zheng Yifan has already decided that Left Guard and Pu Qiang will fight each other for the opportunity.
And for the users, he intends to entrust them to his right and left arms.
These two leaders that Zheng Yifan has his eyes on will require more than just A-Level Essence; at the very least, they will need S-Class or even SS-Level Essence.
