The dawn broke, red as fire, marking the beginning of a dark journey steeped in blood.
In the year of the Earth calendar, significant events unfolded. It was the two-hundredth anniversary of the exploration of outer space, the one-hundredth anniversary of human interstellar migration, and the World Cup football tournament that brought cities to a standstill. However, for Jufeng, the most important event was that he had finally stepped through the gates of Huan City University.
Huan City University, located by the East Sea River in Northeast Huaguo, is one of the most prestigious comprehensive universities in the region. The climate in Washing City features distinct seasons, and within Huan City University, flowers bloom and scenery flourishes, making it a dream institution for countless students. After leaving home a few years ago, Jufeng had worked hard to arrive here despite numerous challenges.
Huan City University is situated in a university town on the outskirts of Washing City, adjacent to several other educational institutions. It was not particularly bustling until recently when new students began arriving for enrollment, causing the entire university town to buzz with activity.
Since leaving home, Jufeng had started living independently. To manage tuition and daily expenses, he began working in logistics during high school—delivering packages. His job was not overly demanding; he was self-sufficient and enjoyed wandering through the streets during his free time.
One evening, as the setting sun blazed like fire, Jufeng rode his bicycle toward an upscale area, a large cardboard box strapped securely to his bike with tape, resembling an injured person with broken bones.
"Off to deliver again?"
As Romain rode along, he passed a handsome young man named Xue who was also delivering packages. Unlike Romain, Xue was not fortunate enough to attend university; he had been forced to drop out of high school due to his family's poverty and had never returned to campus since.
Romain smiled and nodded as they brushed past each other. He felt a kinship with Xue, perhaps because they were both solitary figures in their current circumstances. He sensed they shared certain qualities.
Rebelliousness and defiance were words that could describe them well.
Azure Waterside was the name of an upscale area next to the university town. True to its name, it exuded elegance; each villa was uniquely crafted and offered views of the sea, reflecting its exorbitant property prices.
This area was primarily a retreat for wealthy individuals seeking leisure or for some privileged students who found dorm life unbearable. However, it had little connection with ambitious youths like Jufeng and Xue who relied on package delivery for their livelihoods.
In a corner of this district where no cameras were watching, five masked figures dressed in black were whispering among themselves.
"Old Five, check the photo again and confirm how many targets there are."
A rough voice came from one of the burly men in black. Hearing this, Old Five pulled out a photograph from his pocket; it depicted a group of graceful women. He began pointing at various figures in the photo with his finger.
“Ne, hree, fur, five!”
“Boss, five!”
“Get lost! You're the one who's useless.” The leader said as he gave Old Five a sharp knock on the head.
“No, Boss, I meant there are five of us; what I said was an ancient expression.” Old Five covered his head, looking aggrieved, while the other three couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene.
“Shut up!” the leader barked. “Listen carefully. If we pull this off, Boss’s son will reward us handsomely, and we can retire in luxury. So focus and be decisive. Do you understand?”
“Yes!” the four responded in unison.
“Good, let’s go!”
With a command from the leader, they swiftly moved past the surveillance area, following him toward a villa at Azure Waterside.
They quickly reached their target villa, avoiding the front door and climbing over the fence to hide beneath a window. The leader looked up at the moonlight, estimating that it was about time. He then signaled to his brothers and pulled a sharp blade from his waist, charging toward the luxurious floor-to-ceiling window.
With a loud crash, the massive window shattered, and Five's dark figure suddenly appeared inside the room.
The villa's occupants heard the noise and instinctively rushed from their bedrooms to the living room to investigate. They were met with five shadowy figures and a floor covered in sparkling shards of glass.
Once inside, the five stood up and scanned the room, only to suddenly notice six figures instead of five—one more than they had expected.
There was an extra man standing by the entrance.
“Boss, why is there a sixth?”
Jufeng drove to deliver a package, arriving at the upscale villa area of Azure Waterside. Following the address, he found a villa and had just knocked on the door when a stunningly beautiful woman appeared to sign for the delivery. Suddenly, a loud crash echoed in the air, and five men in black appeared out of nowhere.
Caught off guard, the woman at the door reacted first, and then a sound like shattering glass rang in Jufeng's ears.
"Help! It's a robbery!"
The chaos erupted instantly; the leader of the five men sensed trouble and rushed toward the five women inside the villa. The sight of them sent the women into a panic, their screams mingling with their frantic attempts to flee.
Startled by the woman's cry, Jufeng quickly covered her mouth and whispered, "Don't be afraid. Call the police." With that, he charged into the house.
As the saying goes, still as a maiden, swift as a hare—this was perfectly suited to Jufeng. He moved like a whirlwind, sweeping through the entire villa in an instant.
He first confronted the leader rushing toward him. With a leap, he executed a side kick aimed at the man's face, and with a loud thud, the leader's massive body fell to the ground.
Without pausing, Jufeng noticed a red ribbon on the sofa as he ran past. He grabbed it just in time to dodge a punch from another man in black. Wrapping the ribbon around the man's fist two or three times, he then slid around behind him, binding him tightly with the ribbon. Following suit, another assailant who tried to block him was also ensnared in the same manner. The two men were now pressed closely together like dumplings tied up.
At this point, most of the black-clad men had been subdued, but Old Five and another thug had just captured two young and beautiful girls. Turning around, they saw their companions had been taken down by Jufeng, fear creeping into their eyes.
"Y-you better not come any closer! If you do, I'll hurt her!" Old Five stammered as he shoved one of the girls forward in a desperate attempt to threaten Jufeng.
The girl was already terrified, tears streaming down her face, making her look even more delicate and vulnerable. Jufeng couldn't help but wonder how so many beautiful girls ended up living in this villa.
"Weren't you just boasting? Look at how many of your five are left standing."
Old Five was terrified and instinctively turned his head to glance at his remaining companion. But in that split second of distraction, he felt something flash toward him; before he knew it, his consciousness faded away completely.
"There's still... one more..."
The person next to Old Five was focused entirely on him when he suddenly saw Old Five's body collapse. Before he could comprehend what was happening, a similar beam of light shot toward him, and in the next moment, he followed in Old Five's footsteps.
Those two beams of light were not alien technology; they were actually two shards of glass that Jufeng had secretly picked up during the fight, which he then used as darts to fly into the throats of the two black-clad men.
The struggle lasted less than a minute. The group of beautiful women in the room had yet to react when the woman standing at the door returned from calling the police, only to find five black-clad men either unconscious or bound.
"Wow!" The joy of surviving made the two girls burst into tears. Jufeng looked at the chaotic scene in the room and couldn't help but shake his head helplessly.
Just having entered university and arriving in Washing City, how did he end up performing such a heroic rescue?
The television in the room was still on, broadcasting the fiercely contested World Cup final, featuring teams from Huaguo and East Spain. Jufeng went to the door to retrieve a delivery box and then sat down on the sofa to watch the live broadcast. Without turning his gaze, he addressed the five sisters, "When the police arrive to take statements, I won't be leaving for now. Oh, by the way, if anyone has time, please sign for the delivery."
Jufeng calmly settled down to watch the live broadcast, which reminded everyone else in the room. It seemed they were all women of notable backgrounds; after a brief outburst of emotions, they quickly regained their composure.
One disheveled woman suddenly remembered that they would need to give statements and hurried back to her bedroom to change into clean clothes.
The security measures at Azure Waterside were quite comprehensive. Soon after, a large group of police officers rushed over. The leader breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing that none of the villa's occupants were harmed.
"Sister Lu, it's great that you're unharmed. We will definitely interrogate these arrogant individuals thoroughly. Do you have time tonight? If not, we can take your statement tomorrow."
The police captain showed great respect toward the woman at the door, which caught Jufeng's attention. He thought to himself that she must be someone of high status; otherwise, a police captain wouldn't be so cautious and respectful.
The woman named Lu glanced at Jufeng beside her, pondered for a moment, and then said with poise, "Let's do it tonight then. Thank you for your trouble, Captain."
Thus, five women and one man got into a police car and headed to a nearby station. After giving their statements, they were escorted back home by the police vehicle.
During the interrogation, the police were clearly curious about Jufeng's skills. Taking down five thugs by himself was certainly something that drew attention. However, Romain came from a respectable background and had no fear of inquiries.
Once again back at Azure Waterside, Romain did not re-enter the villa but instead found his bicycle at the entrance and prepared to leave. Just then, he was called to a stop by Sister Lu.
"Thank you for today. My name is Lu Qijia, and I haven't had the chance to ask for yours."
Romain sat on his bicycle, one foot on the pedal and the other on the ground supporting his weight. Hearing the girl's warm and gentle words made him feel unusually pleasant.
"No need to thank me; I just helped out a bit. In fact, I should be thanking you for being so considerate, saving me from having to make another trip tomorrow. My name is Jufeng. Just a friendly reminder: in such an upscale community, those clumsy thieves wouldn't easily sneak in here. There are significant issues within this area, so you all need to be more vigilant in the future."
"Also, how could you tell it was a robbery? From my perspective, their main target seemed to be people rather than money."
With that, Romain rode off on his bicycle, gradually disappearing into the night, leaving Lu Qijia stunned in place.
