At three in the morning, I was hunched over the computer with the Editor-in-Chief, analyzing line by line the data on the USB drive. The more we looked, the more alarming it became.
"This is no environmental equipment; it's practically an ATM!" The Editor-in-Chief slammed his hand on the table in anger. "Look at this database; it records the financial transactions of 147 companies nationwide, and just the 'Technical Service Fee' exceeds two billion!"
I scrutinized each transaction. "Something's off; the flow of funds is too complicated. Why go through so many shell companies?"
Suddenly, a familiar name caught my eye—Azure Sea Investment. I immediately traced this lead and discovered that all the bankrupt companies bought at high prices eventually turned into offshore companies registered in the Virgin Islands.
"They're laundering money!" I jumped to my feet. "The environmental equipment and data falsification are just a facade; the real purpose is..."
Before I could finish my sentence, urgent screeching brakes echoed from downstairs. The Editor-in-Chief quickly turned off the desk lamp and rushed to the window. "This is bad; several cars have surrounded the building!"
"Quick!" I hurriedly copied the data. "You need to leave through the back door; we must preserve this evidence!"
"And you?"
"I still have some things to clarify." I handed him a note. "This is Li Wanqing's wife's phone number. If anything happens to me, have her contact this person..."
Suddenly, heavy footsteps approached outside the door. The Editor-in-Chief said nothing more, grabbed the USB drive, and left through the fire escape. I took a deep breath, deleted the data on my computer, and then opened the door.
"Reporter Yang, sorry to disturb you at this late hour." Two men in suits stood outside, accompanied by several uniformed officers. "We are from the City Environmental Protection Bureau's special investigation team and would like your assistance with an investigation."

In the interrogation room, a middle-aged man with gold-rimmed glasses sat across from me. He didn't introduce himself; instead, he pushed a document toward me. "Do you know what this is?"
I glanced at it: a request regarding the investigation into a certain media person's malicious defamation and disruption of market order.
"Reporter Yang, you're clever, but too young," he said, lighting a cigarette. "Some things are beyond the reach of a small reporter like you."
"Where is Li Wanqing?"
He chuckled. "Professor Li is currently attending an academic conference abroad. What do you think has happened?"
I fixed my gaze on his eyes. "What do you really want?"
"Cooperation." He leaned back in his chair. "All you need to do is sign a letter of commitment, withdraw all investigations, and this matter will be settled. We can even offer you a better opportunity."
"Opportunity?"
"Yes, to become the editor-in-chief at Oasis Environmental. A salary of one million a year—what do you think?"
I couldn't help but laugh. "Is that just to silence me?"
"You’re too naive." His tone suddenly turned cold. "Do you think this is just a scandal involving an Environmental Company? Do you know why no one has investigated them all these years?"
A jolt ran through me. Could it be... "Are you saying..."
"Think carefully," he said as he stood up and walked out. "By the way, about your friend the Editor-in-Chief, I advise you not to hold your breath. He was taken out halfway."
The door closed behind him. I slumped in my chair, my mind racing. Their swift arrival indicated that there must be an even bigger secret hidden within the data. Moreover, he had specifically mentioned that no one had investigated for so many years...
