Ever since Wei Yanwan was granted a title as a consort, Jin Zhong no longer addressed her by name, but respectfully referred to her as "Little Master." Despite Wei Yanwan's repeated insistence that there was no need for such formality between them, Jin Zhong adhered to the rules.
Wei Yanwan could only acquiesce to his wishes. A sly smile crept across her lips as a glimmer of mischief sparkled in her eyes. "Alright, I know what to do now."
The next day, Hongli hosted a banquet for the Selection Candidates. During the feast, Niu Hulu once again brought up the rumors surrounding Wei Yanwan's background, her words dripping with sarcasm.
"I've heard that some people, in their quest to rise and become phoenixes, are willing to fabricate their origins and deceive the Emperor. How shameless!"
Her remarks were laced with an unmistakable undertone aimed directly at Wei Yanwan. The other Selection Candidates exchanged glances, eagerly watching the unfolding drama, curious to see how Wei Yanwan would respond.
However, Wei Yanwan remained unfazed. She set down her wine cup and gracefully rose to bow. "Your Majesty, I come from humble beginnings and know I am unworthy of you, but I dare swear on my life that I have never uttered a single lie."
She lifted her head, locking eyes with Hongli, tears glistening in her gaze as she appeared pitiful. "I lost my mother at a young age and have only my father at home. Over the years, I have managed our household with diligence and never committed any act that would disgrace my family. Yet today, I am slandered by Sister Niu Hulu; I am truly wronged!"
Seeing her in such a sorrowful state stirred a sense of pity within Hongli.
"Enough. I will investigate this matter myself. You may withdraw," he said before turning his gaze toward Niu Hulu with a hint of displeasure in his tone. "Niu Hulu, why do you slander Wei? Do you have any evidence?"
Niu Hulu felt panic rise within her at Hongli's anger and stammered, "I... I only heard it from people in the manor; there is no solid evidence."
Wei Yanwan suddenly dropped to her knees and pleaded, "Your Majesty, I dare to request that you thoroughly investigate this matter and restore my honor!"
Seeing her insistence, Hongli ordered someone to summon the elders of the manor for questioning. Jin Zhong had already bribed those elders; they would naturally reveal Niu Hulu's brother's gambling debts as instructed by Wei Yanwan.
Upon hearing this revelation, Hongli's expression darkened immediately.
"What a shame, Niu Hulu! Your brother has incurred massive debts outside, and instead of worrying for your family, you spread rumors and slander others. How outrageous!"
Niu Hulu never expected that the trap she had meticulously designed would ultimately lead her to a bottomless pit. Her face turned ashen, and she collapsed to the ground, no longer daring to speak.
Hongli, still seething with anger, reprimanded Niu Hulu before sweeping away in a huff.
Wei Yanwan watched Hongli's departing figure, a barely perceptible cold smile curling at the corners of her mouth. Tears still lingered in her eyes, but they could not conceal the fleeting look of triumph on her face.
She slowly rose and bowed gracefully in the direction Hongli had gone, softly saying, "Thank you, Your Majesty, for your keen insight and for clearing my name."
With that, she lowered her gaze and obediently stepped aside, as if nothing had happened moments before.
The Selection Candidates nearby exchanged glances filled with curiosity and wariness as they looked at Wei Yanwan. Only Jin Zhong stood in the corner, admiring Wei Yanwan's silhouette with respect. He thought to himself: She truly is different from her past life; she understands the principle that being too rigid can lead to breaking.
