"Are you really going to do this?" Senior Zhang leaned in to glance at the screen. "Once you hit send, there's no turning back." 0

I paused my fingers. "Are you scared?" 0

"Not scared." He rubbed his temples. "Just... have you thought about the consequences?" 0

"Consequences?" I opened the files on the USB drive. "Are you talking about being expelled like Sister Li Ling? Or living a life of guilt like those who stayed silent?" 0

Senior Zhang fell silent. I continued, "Why did Sister Li Ling's report fail? Because she had only scattered evidence. But this time is different..." I pointed at the screen. "All the evidence of the academic fraud from three years' worth of high-scoring papers is right here." 0

"But Professor Zhou isn't an idiot." Senior Zhang suddenly lowered his voice. "He must be destroying evidence already." 0

I smirked. "So I need to strike first. Do you remember that retracted Nature sub-journal paper from last year?" 0

Senior Zhang nodded. "It was because of that paper that Li Ling..." 0

"The reviewers questioned data fabrication back then." I opened another folder. "Guess what I found in the materials left by Li Ling?" 0

He leaned closer to the screen, his pupils dilating sharply. "This is... raw data?" 0

"Not just that." I pulled up another document. "There's also Professor Zhou's response email to the reviewers. He refused to provide the raw data and instead threatened to accuse the reviewers of academic discrimination." 0

Senior Zhang gasped, "Li Ling left all this behind?" 0

"I had anticipated this day would come," I said with a bitter smile. "But I never expected that Professor Zhou's connections would be so formidable." 0

Just then, my phone suddenly rang. It was an unfamiliar number. 0

"Hello?" 0

"Is this Lin Yuwei?" A gentle female voice responded. "I am Director Li from the school's Supervisory Office. We would like to understand the situation regarding your academic warning..." 0

I instinctively glanced at Senior Zhang, who immediately gestured for me to record the conversation. 0

I switched to speakerphone. "Hello, Director Li. I'm not sure what the specific situation is?" 0

"Well, Professor Zhou has reported that you recently falsified your Experiment Record and took confidential materials from the Laboratory without permission..." 0

I scoffed. "Does he have any evidence?" 0

"Um... we're just following procedures to gather information," she paused. "If you are willing to admit your mistakes and return to the Laboratory to conduct your experiments properly, we can consider a lighter penalty this time..." 0

Suddenly, Senior Zhang snatched the phone from me. "Director Li, right? I'm Zhang Ming from the Biology Department. The student you referred to as 'falsifying' is preparing to report Professor Zhou for his long-term systematic data fabrication. We have evidence; would you like to see it?" 0

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds. "Zhang, this could escalate and be detrimental for everyone involved. Professor Zhou is about to be evaluated for Academician; why must you..." 0

"So we should just cover it up?" I took back the phone. "Director Li, how about you take a look at this evidence first? Then decide whose mouth should really be shut." 0

Hanging up the phone, Senior Zhang looked worried. "You're just provoking them." 0

"They already want to take me down," I continued writing the complaint letter. "I might as well strike first." 0

"At least wait a bit," he said. "Next week is Academician's defense; by then..." 0

"It's too late." I pulled up the surveillance footage. "Look, this is yesterday's footage from the Laboratory. Professor Zhou had several boxes of materials moved overnight. If we delay any longer, the evidence will..." 0

Before I could finish my sentence, my phone rang again. This time it was an even more unfamiliar number. 0

"Hello, is this Lin Yuwei?" The caller claimed to be a professor from a certain university. "I heard there are some misunderstandings between you and Professor Zhou? Old Zhou is a long-time friend of mine; how about I mediate..." 0

I hung up. Another one. 0
