I was so frightened by that gaze that I withdrew my hand, not daring to pick up any food, only shoveling rice from my bowl to fill my stomach.
During the meal, Shen Chengzhou tried to serve me some dishes, but before he could even bring them to my bowl, his mother scolded him.
"Have you forgotten that I have a cleanliness obsession? Those chopsticks going back and forth are so dirty! What if they carry E. coli or something?"
" Anan, it's just that I'm sitting too far away to reach. We've been busy all noon; we can't let her eat only rice without any vegetables."
"So what if we've been busy all noon? I've cooked for you all my life, and I've never seen you care this much about me. You've really forgotten your mother now that you have a wife."
Shen Chengzhou sighed and fell silent. I felt embarrassed and my face turned red; I just wanted to finish eating and leave quickly.
Even though I was focused on my rice, I still caught a glimpse of Li Xiaomei's fierce glare.
"Why did you make so many cold dishes? And this soup—there's already scrambled eggs with tomatoes; why make tomato egg soup too?"
Li Xiaomei poked around in each dish with her chopsticks, belittling the entire spread of food.
Though I was boiling with anger inside, I reminded myself that it was our first meeting, and I had to hold it in no matter how upset I felt.
After finishing the meal, Li Xiaomei neatly tossed the bowls and chopsticks into the sink and shouted, "You two can go take a nap after eating. Leave the washing up to us women. Right, Anan?"
I walked over to the sink, squeezed some dish soap, and started scrubbing away.
Just as I finished washing all the dishes and was about to throw the trash out, Li Xiaomei suddenly screamed at me, "How can you throw this away!"
I thought I had tossed her gold bracelet or ring, but instead, she pulled out a disposable bowl and chopsticks I had used and started lamenting over them.
"You can use this again next time you come. How can you be so wasteful? How will you live like this in the future?"
Hearing this, I could no longer hold back and retorted, "Auntie, this is disposable and can't be reused. Besides, I don't plan on coming back in the future. Why keep it?"
"What do you mean you won't come back? After you get married, buying groceries, cooking, and washing dishes will all be your responsibilities. This is just the beginning!"
"I should tell you that today isn't even my birthday. I was just testing you, and who knew you'd perform so poorly!"
I burst out laughing at that moment; thinking about how flustered I had been earlier made me want to slap myself twice.
Shen Chengzhou rushed over upon hearing the commotion. Looking at the messy sink, he shouted at us, "What are you two making a fuss about over something so trivial? If you don't want to wash, then don't!"
Hearing this made me so angry that I turned around and walked towards the door. But to my surprise, Shen Chengzhou yanked my apron off and threw it down in front of his mother.
"This is my wife. If she doesn't want to do something, no one can force her. You can wash these dishes if you want!"
I widened my eyes in disbelief; I never expected Shen Chengzhou would speak to his mother like that for my sake.
Li Xiaomei plopped down on the ground, clutching her heart as she began to throw a tantrum. "You little brat! Even before you're married, you're already siding with your wife. You've truly been bewitched by that vixen!"
"Alright, Mom, it's not a big deal. The ground is cold; let me help you up," Shen Chengzhou said, just as he reached out to assist her. However, he unexpectedly slipped and fell right on top of her.
"How dare you! You actually hit your mother for that woman! I’ve raised a white-eyed wolf; I might as well not live anymore! Not living anymore!" she cried out.
At that moment, Shen Dagen burst out of the bedroom and threw a punch at Shen Chengzhou.
Fueled by alcohol, Shen Dagen struck hard, causing blood to spill with just one blow, while hurling a torrent of foul language, trying to drive him away.
Seeing everything unfold because of him made Shen Chengzhou's heart ache terribly. He immediately bowed and apologized to his uncle and aunt.
But at that moment, Shen Chengzhou suddenly shouted in anger, "Why should you apologize? What did you do wrong? If they can't accept you, then I don't want this family either!"
