Yama's Wedding
"Big Brother, what exactly are you two talking about? We can't understand a word!" Yao Guang asked Shū, and upon hearing her words, the other remaining Star Lords nodded in agreement. Yao Guang expressed their shared confusion, as they too could not decipher the cryptic exchange between Shū and Xu.
"Hahahahaha!" Shū chuckled at Yao Guang and the others.
Xu simply smiled without saying a word.
The mysterious demeanor of the two only piqued Yao Guang and Kaiyang's curiosity. Unable to contain himself, Kaiyang urged, "Come on, you two, hurry up!"
"Don't rush us; we'll tell you soon!" Shū reassured Kaiyang.
"Alright, alright, just be quick!" Kaiyang replied impatiently, his eagerness drawing light laughter from the others.
Shū glanced at Xu, who nodded slightly in agreement with Shū's actions. Only then did Shū continue, "I think you all remember what Xu's true form is, right?" Instead of answering Yao Guang's question directly, Shū posed another one.
"I remember! Xu's true form is the golden Wheel of Reincarnation!" Yao Guang exclaimed confidently, having observed Xu closely over time and recalling even the color perfectly.
"That's right," Shū confirmed.
Yao Guang looked at Shū with excitement but still didn't understand how Xu's true form being the golden Wheel of Reincarnation related to him being unconcerned about the pressures from the Underworld and Heaven.
Seeing Yao Guang's puzzled expression, Xu smiled and stepped forward to elaborate on Shū's words. "Since my true form is the golden Wheel of Reincarnation, it means I am neither a deity cultivated through later practices nor someone elevated by the Jade Emperor or Buddha. Like you all, I possess innate divine power born from the essence of all things. Back in the West, it was merely because Buddha discovered me first; otherwise, I would have no connection to him at all. I transcend beyond these five realms yet exist within them."
Upon hearing Xu's explanation, Yao Guang finally understood. That's right! She had overlooked this point all along. Xu was indeed just like the Star Lord of the Big Dipper Seventh Star.
Deities or not, the Big Dipper Seventh Star and Xue are essentially the same. They are born from the earth and share its lifespan. They do not belong to any side. What do they represent? Perhaps they embody all things on this earth, as their spiritual energy is continuously supplied by the essence of the world. Their divine power also comes from this very essence.
Thus, no one can eliminate them, and no one can threaten them. Apart from the essence of the earth, Xue and the Big Dipper Seventh Star have almost no rivals; they simply have their own missions. These missions are intertwined with their existence, which is to uphold the ways and principles of the earth.
Xue thought to himself that perhaps this was not such a good thing, much like the Candle Dragon of old. Even if one possesses great abilities, in the end, one might still be forced into sacrifice, leaving the Phoenix Empress alone in this world. The reason the Phoenix Empress did not follow the Candle Dragon was that she had her own fate. This fate prevented them from doing whatever they wished or indulging in their desires freely. Only when their destined time arrived would they find their ultimate resting place. While such abilities might be envied by others, only those who are within it truly understand the pain involved.
"Is that really how it is?" The other Star Lords gradually understood. Indeed, Xue did not need to rely on Xi and Ting's powers for self-preservation. Even Xi's Buddha and Ting's Jade Emperor could do nothing against him! Ultimately, it came down to one thing: having left the Underworld, Xue had instead gained freedom. As long as he did not violate any rules or principles, he could live freely and independently, enjoying life as he pleased! In this way, everyone here was living a life less fulfilling than Xue's.
Yao Guang felt a surge of happiness in her heart. Initially worried that Xue might feel sad for being abandoned a second time, she now saw his demeanor and realized this was for the best—without any constraints or coercion, Xue could live freely and pursue what he wanted.
"Yao Guang, so now you don't have to worry about me anymore, right?" He said to Yao Guang, knowing she had been concerned about him.
"Yes!" Yao Guang replied to his question. Indeed, she no longer needed to worry about Xue; she could now focus her thoughts on the impending great battle.
"But Xue, can you really stay in the court like this? Even though you've become free, the rules of the court won't allow you to remain there!" The wisest Wenqu pointed out this issue after some thought.
"That's right; logically speaking, while Xue's identity is no longer an issue, it has become a problem in itself. The people in the court absolutely do not permit anyone without celestial status to stay in this palace!" Quan added, well-versed in these regulations.
"What should we do then? Does that mean Yao Guang and Xue will be separated again?" Kaiyang exclaimed anxiously upon hearing Wenqu and Quan.
Yao Guang looked at Xue with concern after hearing their words. How could this happen? She had previously worried that Xue's identity would become an obstacle between them but never expected that without either party's identity, it would still pose a barrier between her and Xue. No matter how she tried to approach it, it felt increasingly difficult for her to be with him. Regardless of her actions, there seemed to be an insurmountable gap between them.
"Xue, what should we do?"
Yao Guang's voice was tinged with tears as Xue approached. He noticed that her usually smiling eyes were now filled with moisture, and seeing her red nose made his heart ache.
"It's okay, Yao Guang. Even if I'm not in the court, we can still stay in touch. Why don't I wait for you in the lower realm?" Xue said, stepping closer. In front of all the celestial lords, he wrapped his arms around Yao Guang and gently patted her back, offering comfort.
"But... but I still want to be with you. I want to see you all the time!" The more tenderly Xue treated her, the more reluctant Yao Guang felt to part with him. Initially, she had only felt a slight sense of loss, but now that Xue ld her close, all she could smell was his scent. The thought of soon having to part from him made her heart ache even more than the last time they separated. Last time, she had to force herself to let him go for his own safety, but now there was no danger, yet she still had to part ways.
"Yao Guang, you've grown up. As an adult, you need to take responsibility for your actions. You should know that keeping Xue in the court right now is the most dangerous thing," Shu said, looking at the two of them. In truth, Shu disapproved of Xue's decision; it seemed that Yao Guang had been spoiled by him during her time in the lower realm. In the past, Yao Guang would never have cried so easily when faced with difficulties. Watching them brought Shu mixed feelings—he felt gratified yet deeply worried for Yao Guang. Even though he knew Xue would take good care of her, he feared that such dependence would hinder Yao Guang's growth.
What would happen when Xue had his own fate to contend with? Would Yao Guang be strong enough to face everything that was coming? Shu felt anxious about it.
Yet seeing Yao Guang like this also brought Shu some joy because with Xue around, she was no longer like a hedgehog, bristling with defenses against anyone who approached her gently. Now, she had completely retracted her spikes and appeared as pure as a child.
Hearing Shu's words, Yao Guang reluctantly released Xue's hand. Deep down, she knew how overly sentimental she had become! The old Yao Guang would never have acted this way; no matter how much injustice she faced outside, as long as she returned to her palace and saw her brothers and mother, she could silently bear all grievances without complaint. But ever since spending time with Xue in the lower realm, even the slightest grievance felt unbearable for her now. She was like a child craving candy, playfully trying to get Xue to look at her a little longer.
Xue watched Yao Guang wipe away her tears and listened to Shu's earlier words. He knew that the old Yao Guang had been strong; however, the current Yao Guang seemed fragile. This vulnerability stemmed from the fact that previously she had no one to lean on or express her feelings to. Although her brothers treated her well, they were often busy; even if they could help today, they couldn't always be by her side. Thus, Yao Guang bore all her pain alone. But now that he was in her life, she understood that Xue would never abandon her.
With someone to whom she could freely express herself without reservation, all her pains could finally be shared.
Xue relished the fact that Yao Guang had no secrets from him; it allowed him to truly understand just how deeply she loved him. (To be continued.)
