Yama's Wedding
"Brother, let me go find the Jade Emperor," Yao Guang said, his heart ablaze with anger. How could the Jade Emperor treat his brothers this way? They had worked hard in the court, and even if they had no achievements to boast of, they certainly had endured their share of hardships. Wasn't it too much for the Jade Emperor to treat his brothers like this?
"Alright, I will go with you," Kaiyang replied. The fire in his heart had been simmering ever since the earlier incident, and hearing Yao Guang's words only fueled his agreement. He grabbed his weapon and prepared to leave with Yao Guang.
"Yao Guang! Kaiyang!" A deep voice came from behind them. A pressure unique to Greedy Wolf enveloped Yao Guang and Kaiyang, causing the very air around them to tremble with tension. The force was so strong that it rooted them to the spot, preventing them from taking another step forward. They stood there, unable to move under the weight of the pressure coming from behind.
Yao Guang's passionate resolve was interrupted by this force, leaving him feeling wronged. He turned to face Greedy Wolf and said softly, "Brother." His voice carried a hint of dissatisfaction.
Seeing Yao Guang's expression, Greedy Wolf understood that he was standing up for them. However, matters concerning the Emperor were not for a subject to decide. Even if the Emperor was in the wrong, it had always been said that a ruler demands loyalty from his subjects, and subjects must comply; this principle applied equally in the court.
Yao Guang looked into Greedy Wolf's eyes and saw the helplessness and pain reflected there. Initially filled with rage, her heart softened at the sight of her brother's expression. How much had he endured over the years to face the Jade Emperor's humiliation with such composure? A wave of sorrow washed over Yao Guang.
"Brother, I won't go," she said to Greedy Wolf.
Seeing that Greedy Wolf was already upset, Kaiyang could only awkwardly step aside.
"Understood." Greedy Wolf recognized Yao Guang's reluctance but knew that the current situation could not allow her to act recklessly. If he could still restrain her now, what would happen if he were no longer around? Who could Yao Guang and their brothers rely on then?
"What do you plan to do next?" Xue asked as he observed everything unfold. He already understood that the Jade Emperor surely had his own agenda this time. It was a pity for these loyal deities who likely had no idea what the Jade Emperor truly intended.
"We're right here and can monitor the situation with the Dragon Clan at any time. If anything happens, we can report it through the South Gate," Quan replied to Xue. Being punished at the South Gate provided them with an excellent vantage point to observe their enemies.
Xue glanced once more at the Dragon Clan below; it seemed that war was imminent. He looked back at the lively scene inside and thought, Jade Emperor, what exactly are you planning?
"Brother, I will stand with you," Yao Guang declared resolutely to Greedy Wolf.
"Alright."
The Big Dipper Seventh Star has always been born from the same root. Since it was the Jade Emperor who punished the Seven Stars, Yao Guang must be with them as well.
"Xue, you should leave the court for now; after all, your current identity is a bit awkward," Yao Guang said after a moment of thought, turning to Xue.
Xue nodded. The war between the court and the Dragon Clan wouldn't break out in the short term, so he indeed couldn't stay in the court for long.
"Then I'll take my leave. You must be cautious while in the court," Xue advised Yao Guang with concern.
"Then I must trouble you, Star Lords, to take good care of Yao Guang," Xue added, bowing to the several Star Lords standing nearby.
They all responded in agreement.
Yao Guang watched reluctantly as Xue left through the South Gate.
After Xue departed, Shu pondered over what Xue had just said. Why did it sound so unpleasant? Clearly, she was his sister, yet hearing Xue's words made it seem as if they were outsiders. It felt as if his sister was no longer his sister. Just as Shu was about to tell Yao Guang to properly address Xue next time, he looked up and saw Yao Guang gazing longingly in the direction where Xue had gone. The words that were on his lips were swallowed back down. Forget it; this sister of his truly was growing up and would soon be out of reach.
Shu looked at the warlike atmosphere below and hoped that this time the court could escape this calamity. If it came to a point where there was no other choice, he would have to be selfish and protect his family behind him.
Xue returned to the Underworld from the court. Walking on the Bridge of Helplessness, he looked at the souls within the Underworld and felt a sense of disconnection from reality. He opened his eyes to see a dimly lit path before him; this path led to rebirth in the Underworld. Occasionally, he spotted white lanterns on either side, held by figures with ox heads or horse faces—these were the Ox-Head and Horse-Face of the Underworld. Behind them walked men and women of all ages, most with haggard faces and dazed expressions, stumbling along. Each person here was bound by chains.
Though these scenes were familiar to him, Xue found himself watching with interest as if he hadn't taken such leisurely notice of them in a long time.
The ground in the Underworld was barren; in the distance stood a towering hall amidst it all, with wind howling through mountain gaps carrying mournful cries. Looking up revealed a sky devoid of sun, moon, or stars—just a mass of chaos. Having just returned, Xue was already unaccustomed to the appearance of the Underworld; here it was only dimly lit, with no sight of that bright Star Lord above—his own Star Lord.
Xue hurried to finish the matters at hand so he could quickly seek out Yao Guang.
"Xue, you finally returned."
As soon as Xue stepped into Yama's Hall, he heard the voice of Yama King.
"Yes." Unlike his demeanor in front of Yao Guang, Xue resumed his cold demeanor in the Imperial Capital. He realized that aside from smiling more and teasing her, his expression remained perpetually icy in front of others.
Yama King observed Xue, who had initially worn a faint smile but quickly wiped it away upon hearing his voice. Internally, he grumbled about how this King of the Tenth Hall never showed any warmth in his presence. He had hoped that after Xue's visit to the mortal realm, he would return with a bit more humanity. However, it seemed nothing had changed. Last time, Xue had hurriedly looked up some information about the Underworld before leaving again. Later, he learned that it was related to Star Lord Yao Guang. It appeared that Xue and Star Lord Yao Guang's relationship had become quite significant.
"Xue, Star Lord Yao Guang has returned to her position. We have done our duty here in the Underworld; you should come back today," Yama King shifted to serious matters.
"Return now?" Xue frowned. In his plans, he wasn't ready to go back to the Underworld so soon. If he left now, it wouldn't be as convenient as it was at present.
"What’s wrong? You don’t want to come back?" Yama King looked at Xue in surprise, not expecting this diligent Ten Kings of Hell, who had never taken a break in a thousand years, to hesitate after spending just a short time in the mortal realm.
"Yama King, you're exaggerating," Xue replied, looking at him. "I just have a few unfinished matters."
"Oh? What matters are still incomplete?" Yama King asked curiously, surprised that Xue had unfinished business.
Xue fell silent for a moment at Yama King's question. He was unsure of the Underworld's stance on the war involving the dragon clan and the court. He couldn't make a decision; if he acted rashly, it might affect Yao Guang.
"What’s wrong? Is it impossible?" Yama King became curious due to Xue's unusual attitude. It was rare to see him at a loss for words when questioned.
"Not exactly; I just fear I might scare you," Xue finally said coldly after a long silence.
"Hahaha." The Yama King couldn't help but laugh upon hearing Xue's words. Was he joking? After all, he was the Yama King of the Underworld; what kind of demons and monsters had he not seen? He truly couldn't think of anything that could scare him.
"I asked the Jade Emperor to marry Yao Guang." Xue said, looking at the Yama King's disdainful expression.
What!!!!!!
Had Xue just said what he thought he heard? The Yama King widened his eyes, staring at Xue in disbelief. Had he misheard?
"I asked the Jade Emperor to marry Yao Guang." Xue repeated, observing the Yama King's reaction.
This time, the Yama King was certain that his ears were functioning properly. He had heard Xue's words clearly; Xue had just stated a fact—one that could indeed shock him.
"Did you just say you asked the Jade Emperor to marry the Star Lord Yao Guang? The one and only Star Lord Yao Guang?" The Yama King kept repeating Yao Guang's name in utter shock, hoping that Xue would refute his statement, that it wasn't the Star Lord Yao Guang he was thinking of. After all, there were many people with the same name in this world.
"Yes, that's her." Xue replied without hesitation.
Now, the Yama King was completely stunned. Xue's affirmation and his actual acknowledgment of it—he had really approached the Jade Emperor about this.
This was troublesome. This was not what he had discussed with Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. He hadn't expected that the development of this situation would exceed both his and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's predictions. (To be continued.)
