Xue felt that there was nothing wrong; the state of the Phoenix Empress was indeed not good at this moment.
Ordinary people knew that Phoenix Fire was beneficial for greatly enhancing one's power, but they did not realize that once Phoenix Fire left one's body, the power received actually came from the phoenix that had lost its inner core. The Phoenix Empress had given her inner core to Yao Guang, partly because Yao Guang was in a dire situation at the time, and partly due to her own selfishness. Over the years, the Phoenix Empress had remained in her Phoenix Mountain, but that did not mean she was unaware of what was happening outside. Back then, under the desperate protection of the Candle Dragon, it was no longer just eight of them. This time, when the dragon clan rebelled, the Phoenix Empress did not intervene simply because she was unwilling to enter into those conflicts. However, that did not mean she was willing to watch as the Candle Dragon willingly abandoned her and Xue to be trampled by those others. After unintentionally seeing Yao Guang, the Phoenix Empress casually assessed Yao Guang's fate and unexpectedly discovered that Yao Guang was indeed the Yao Guang star; Greedy Wolf's fate was broken while Yao Guang's fate was established. It seemed that over these years, the Jade Emperor had not been very comfortable sitting in his Celestial Palace.
Otherwise, why would he allow Yao Guang to descend to experience tribulations? If it were not to keep Greedy Wolf Star Lord within the court and disrupt the original balance, now with the dragon clan invading, it appeared to be a war between the dragon clan and the divine clan; in reality, it was merely a game orchestrated by the Jade Emperor. No destruction, no establishment; indeed, the Jade Emperor had a good plan.
That person was still the same as before. The Phoenix Empress had never attended court over these years, degrading herself to mortal status and implicating her Phoenix Clan. From being a revered divine beast, she had become a mere bird in the lower realm. Yet, the Phoenix Empress had no regrets; love was love—why should she be wrong? If possible, she would rather not see that person at all because every time she encountered him, more resentment towards those past events would arise in her heart.
Although back then Candle Dragon left her to fulfill his great responsibility partly due to his own will, another part of it resulted from that person's silver tongue. Now that person sat high above in his Lingxiao Palace receiving worship from countless immortals while she had lost Candle Dragon and was forgotten in this corner, enduring millennia of solitude. There were no such cheap deals in this world; even if Candle Dragon were still alive, it could not compensate for the Phoenix Empress's thousand years of desolation. The current Phoenix Empress was no longer as radiant as she once was; even if she did not pull that person down from his lofty divine seat, she still did not wish to see Jade Emperor so comfortably finish this game. She must stir things up within it as a warning to them; perhaps it was also because the Phoenix Empress was too bored after all. After all, she could not let herself die quietly like this—let Yao Guang fulfill her wishes instead.
The Phoenix Empress arrived at the back mountain where the grass grew almost as tall as a person. It appeared somewhat desolate yet possessed an alternative rugged beauty.
The Phoenix Empress entered a cave; before fully stepping inside, she felt waves of cold air surging through her body, urging her forward into the cave. It seemed she had overexerted herself; what she had given Yao Guang as an inner core was her true phoenix fire. As Yao Guang became increasingly adept at controlling her inner core, each session of teaching caused more of the Phoenix Empress's true fire to be absorbed by her inner core. Now, with more and more true fire being absorbed and Yao Guang drawing more power from it with each exercise, every time Yao Guang practiced her skills, she was absorbing the life force of the Phoenix Empress. Thus, after each session with Yao Guang, the Phoenix Empress needed to leave alone and find a place to recover her true fire within; without her inner core's operation, she could not keep up with Yao Guang's absorption rate.
The Phoenix Empress quickly sat down and held her breath in meditation, urging the flow of true fire within her body. The time required for recovery had been increasing; however, this also indicated that Yao Guang's inner core was becoming more integrated with her.
The Phoenix Empress felt a bit dizzy; the cold emanating from within made her shiver uncontrollably. Waves of bone-chilling cold were threatening to extinguish even the scattered true fire within her body. After carefully examining herself, she realized that ice crystals had formed all over her body’s surface. At this moment, her complexion was pale and lifeless; inside her body had already suffered complete destruction. For the Phoenix Clan, not only was an inner core important but so too was their physical form. Even if reborn through fire, once their original body perished, their Primordial Spirit could only be reshaped based on the spiritual energy absorbed from their original body's destruction. Now that the Phoenix Empress had given away her inner core to Yao Guang and her physical form began to decay slowly as well—after this examination—she felt little concern.
Taking a deep breath, she focused on mobilizing true fire within herself; she needed to hold on for a while longer since Yao Guang's Phoenix Fire had yet to fully merge with her. The Phoenix Empress could not just leave like this; otherwise, it would mean not only her death but also potentially implicating Yao Guang. After all, Yao Guang’s true form was merely a star; if burned by true fire, it could lead to a star falling from the sky. It was also unfortunate that back then she only thought about how to take revenge on that person while forgetting that once Yao Guang restored her true form, her Primordial Spirit would not withstand her true fire. Thus came about previous events—thankfully nothing happened when she calculated that Yao Guang would face such tribulations; when she arrived there and saw Yao Guang and Xue falling from midair together nearly made her heart leap into her throat. Fortunately, she arrived just in time; otherwise, who knows how severely injured they would have been now? Her conscience could hardly bear it.
Now that those who could make her life shine like stars or dim like ashes were gone, there were still Yao Guang and Xue waiting for her. They were different from herself; Xue and Candle Dragon were also different—she could not let them end up like herself.
With this thought in mind, the Phoenix Empress steeled herself; she must not lose focus and began gathering true fire within herself again while injecting what little strength remained into it. She started adjusting the true fire inside slowly expanding it bit by bit until what once flickered began illuminating all of her interior once more.
Unknowingly, by the time the Phoenix Empress came to her senses, it was already the second morning. She stood up and tidied her clothes.
It seemed that she would have to make a trip to Yao Guang today. (To be continued.)
