Yama's Wedding
The poor Destiny Keeper had just escaped from the grasp of the Pivot, only to be startled by Xue's piercing gaze. After finally catching her breath, she couldn't help but sigh at her unfortunate fate.
She then approached to take a closer look at Yao Guang's condition.
Yao Guang appeared dim and devoid of the brilliance that once characterized Starlight. The Destiny Keeper examined Yao Guang from head to toe, finding no obvious wounds. It didn't seem like she was injured, but earlier, when she entered, she had seen Yao Guang acting almost crazed, struggling as if in a frenzy. The Destiny Keeper scrutinized Yao Guang once more and noticed that her tightly shut eyes seemed to have something red within them. Upon closer inspection, it appeared that something was jumping around inside Yao Guang's eyes.
So that's what it is!
Watching the Destiny Keeper dawdle, Xue's patience had clearly worn thin.
"What happened to Yao Guang?" Xue demanded, staring intently at the Destiny Keeper.
The Destiny Keeper could see that the Underworld's Yama was running out of patience.
She shook her head and shot a glance at Xue. "How long has Yao Guang been like this?"
"I don't know," Shu replied coldly from behind the Destiny Keeper.
The corners of the Destiny Keeper's mouth twitched as she cast a sympathetic look at Yao Guang, who was cradled in Xue's arms. "You don't know? What do you mean by that?!"
The Destiny Keeper had lost all faith in these Star Lords; not one of them had noticed Yao Guang's condition beforehand.
"All of you are supposed to be among the top deities in both realms. Can't you tell what's wrong with Yao Guang?" The Destiny Keeper pointed an accusing finger at the deities, raising her voice at them. She figured she might as well confront them now; otherwise, once they realized what was happening, they would surely turn on her again. The Destiny Keeper was often bullied by these Star Lords from Big Dipper and saw this as an opportunity to settle some scores.
The Star Lords stood there, wide-eyed and speechless, taken aback by the Destiny Keeper's sudden outburst. They had just taken turns examining Yao Guang and hadn't discovered what was wrong with her.
Shu regarded the Destiny Keeper for a moment before finally saying, "What exactly is wrong with Yao Guang?"
Upon hearing Shu's question, the Destiny Keeper looked as if she might faint. "What do you mean what’s wrong with Yao Guang? Can't you see the redness around her eyes?" She pointed emphatically at the red area beside Yao Guang's eyes as she addressed them.
The remaining people heard the words of the Destiny Keeper and quickly surrounded Yao Guang. Xue looked down at Yao Guang in his arms and indeed noticed a red glow near the corner of her eye.
Upon seeing this, Xue immediately channeled his magic into Yao Guang's body, trying to expel the red entity.
Shu and several Star Lords anxiously watched Xue.
Xue slowly gathered his magic until it enveloped the red dot inside Yao Guang. However, before his magic could reach it, he felt a wave of intense heat rush toward him, absorbing all of his magic. At the same time, the red light seemed to grow larger within Yao Guang. Enduring such an assault, Yao Guang writhed in pain in Xue's embrace, crying out, "Ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah..."
Yao Guang's cries of agony made Xue want to channel his magic again into her body, but seeing her in such distress, he quickly withdrew his magic. Everyone watched as the red dot that had been at the corner of Yao Guang's eye grew slightly larger and began to roam around inside her body. With its movement, Yao Guang's expression turned even more pained. In a matter of moments, her previously dry hair became damp, and beads of sweat dripped continuously from her forehead.
"Destiny Keeper!" Shu's deep roar came from behind him.
"Alright, alright, I understand," Destiny Keeper said as he dug into his ears. "No need to be so anxious; why are you so worked up?"
Destiny Keeper rummaged through his backpack for a while, while Shu and Xue behind him were growing impatient. "Found it!" Destiny Keeper exclaimed excitedly as he pulled out a bottle.
He took the bottle and retrieved a pill from inside. "Lift her up," he instructed Xue.
Xue carefully propped up Yao Guang as Destiny Keeper placed the pill into her mouth.
Everyone anxiously watched Yao Guang's condition.
Sure enough, after a short while, Yao Guang's complexion began to regain its color, and her breathing normalized.
"She's back to normal," Xue said as he stroked Yao Guang's head. The warmth in his palm began to cool down, easing his previously tense emotions. It was only then that he felt a slight pain in his hand; looking down, he noticed a small blister forming where he had held Yao Guang.
"Yao Guang, is she alright now?" Shu asked uncertainly.
"No," Destiny Keeper replied regretfully. "I just used the pill to control the Phoenix Fire within her."
"What?" Xue seemed to have heard something. "What is Phoenix Fire?"
Seeing the puzzled expressions on everyone's faces, Destiny Keeper could only resign himself to the situation. "You all don't know yet?"
"Hurry!" Shu was losing patience with Destiny Keeper's slow explanations. He just wanted to understand what had happened to Yao Guang.
"Phoenix Fire is the inner core of a phoenix. Only a phoenix that has undergone a bloody rebirth can possibly transform its inner core into Phoenix Fire. As the name suggests, this inner core carries the flames from the phoenix's rebirth, which is known as Three Flavors True Fire. The inner core within Yao Guang is pure fire; it must belong to the Phoenix Empress." Destiny Keeper's explanation left Xue deep in thought.
A phoenix? The Phoenix Empress! He had retrieved Yao Guang from the hands of the Phoenix Empress. Did she give her inner core to Yao Guang before him? But what use would that inner core have?
"Then why is Yao Guang like this?" Everyone knew that an inner core was not harmful to the body; on the contrary, an inner core cultivated over a thousand years would carry its owner's magical power and greatly benefit a celestial being's cultivation. If it really was an inner core, why did Yao Guang appear to be in such pain?
"You probably don't know this!" Destiny Keeper said proudly. "The inner core of a phoenix is different from others, especially for those reborn through fire. It inherently carries Three Flavors True Fire. The nature of a phoenix is fire; the purer the inner core, the more it enhances their cultivation. However, if their inner core falls into someone else's hands, it will inevitably reject that person's body, especially since Yao Guang has a water attribute. Just now, it was simply because Yao Guang's body was rejecting this inner core."
With Destiny Keeper's explanation, everyone understood why Yao Guang had reacted that way.
"Then why can't we take it out?" Xue asked.
Destiny Keeper rubbed his forehead, beginning to doubt whether these people were truly celestial beings. With such long lifespans, how could they not know these things?
"That's because Phoenix Fire, unlike other inner cores, can only be actively transferred by the phoenix itself. If someone tries to forcibly take it away, once the inner core leaves the phoenix's body, it will self-destruct. And if it is actively transferred into another person's body, it cannot be forcibly removed again."
Listening to Destiny Keeper, Xue looked back at Yao Guang. Should they really let her suffer like this? Was there no way to resolve it?
"However," Destiny Keeper continued, "the power of this inner core is simply too strong. It should ideally remain within Yao Guang, but for some reason, the inner core does not want to stay in her body, which has led to the current situation."
"What should we do then?"
"I have already used medicine to control it, but this control won't last long. By the next time Yao Guang has an episode, it may not be effective anymore. I think you should ask Yao Guang which phoenix gave her its inner core." Destiny Keeper kindly suggested.
Looking at Yao Guang in this state, Shu felt a headache coming on. Yao Guang was already exhausted in Xue's arms, and given Yao Guang's condition, it was likely that he didn't even know who had placed him into this inner elixir.
"I know," Xue said as he held Yao Guang. He thought he should have figured out where the inner elixir inside Yao Guang came from.
"Where did it come from?" Kaiyang asked anxiously. He had just managed to control his impatience moments ago, but now that Xue seemed to know the origin of the Phoenix Fire within Yao Guang, he had to get to the bottom of it.
Xue picked up Yao Guang and prepared to leave.
"Where are you taking Yao Guang?" Shu asked, looking at Xue's determined stance.
"To find her!" Xue replied, staring at Shu who was blocking his way.
"Find who?" Shu questioned. There was no way he would let Xue leave with Yao Guang right in front of him.
"Get out of the way!" Xue said curtly, his concern for Yao Guang's health overriding any politeness.
"You don't understand; we won't let you." All the Star Lords stood firmly against Xue. They were not going to allow him to leave so easily.
"I'm afraid I can't do that." No matter the reason, Xue could not reveal the location of the Phoenix Empress to them. He had promised Candle Dragon that as long as he remained in this world, he would protect her well. No matter why the Phoenix Empress had left her Phoenix Fire for Yao Guang this time, Xue believed that she would not harm Yao Guang. After all, even after that incident, the Phoenix Empress had only confined herself within Phoenix Mountain and had not stepped out for many years. (To be continued.)
