Yama's Wedding
On this side, Blossom watched the interaction between Xue and Yao Guang, her sadness beyond words. The love that the Flower Fairy had cherished for years finally came to an end at this very moment.
Meanwhile, the Emperor listened to Xue's words, observing him closely. Anyone who could sit in this position, regardless of how they appeared to others or what they might be thought of in their minds, was not someone to be underestimated. Though he might not be seen as a wise Jade Emperor by others, it was clear that he possessed exceptional qualities to have reached this status. Just like the current Emperor, who, despite being the weakest among the four clans back then, ultimately defeated the other three. Xue would certainly not take such a person lightly.
The Jade Emperor looked at the kneeling Star Lord Yao Guang and Greedy Wolf Star Lord. He realized that he had been too careless. Since ascending to the throne, he had been preoccupied with dealing with external threats from the Underworld, especially those from the West, neglecting internal issues. If it weren't for Star Lord Yao Guang volunteering during that time, he would have remained oblivious to the hidden prowess of Big Dipper Seventh Star. Even though she was the last Star Lord among the Big Dipper, she was a formidable force; her bloodthirsty spells surpassed even those of the martial generals in his court. It seemed he had misjudged everything, thinking Greedy Wolf Star Lord was the strongest here. However, upon further investigation, he discovered that each Star Lord possessed remarkable skills. Yao Guang was a fierce warrior despite being ranked last; Greedy Wolf was the main star, and the Jade Emperor had always known how powerful he was. Now it appeared that his beloved minister had concealed many matters from him. Moreover, this Star Lord Yao Guang seemed to have connections with both the Underworld's King of Hell and a former Buddha from the West. If there were any entanglements between them, it could lead to complications.
“Wheel King, what did you just say?” Regardless of the circumstances, he needed to probe into Wheel King's intentions. At this critical moment, the Jade Emperor wished to avoid any further conflicts with both the West and the Underworld; after all, dealing with one dragon clan was already overwhelming. If any other issues arose, he could truly fall from his high pedestal.
“Jade Emperor, I have come for Star Lord Yao Guang,” Xue replied calmly before the imposing Jade Emperor.
This was quite intriguing. Hearing those around him discuss Wheel King’s words piqued the Jade Emperor's interest; however, he did not believe that Xue's true intentions aligned with what these deities speculated.
“Oh? And what is your purpose?” The Jade Emperor regarded Xue thoughtfully. He had heard about the Buddha-Demon War and remembered Xue's performance during that conflict vividly. Unfortunately, he had never witnessed Xue's strength firsthand; when he visited the West, he hadn’t anticipated that Buddha would send Xue into the Underworld ahead of him. Remembering this made him frown; that figure from the West was not someone to be trifled with.
“I request that Jade Emperor betroth Star Lord Yao Guang to me,” Xue stated slowly.
At this declaration, shock rippled through everyone present; each person's expression varied greatly.
Yao Guang remained kneeling on the ground in disbelief. What? Xue was actually asking Jade Emperor to betroth her to him at this moment? She couldn't tell if she had misheard; how could Xue say such things to Jade Emperor now? While she worried for Xue, she couldn't help but feel a flutter of joy in her heart at his words. Every woman hopes for her beloved man to declare their relationship publicly; Yao Guang was no exception. Even though she had followed closely behind Xue and pursued him tirelessly, she too wished for him to hold her dear in his heart.
Yao Guang's emotions were beautiful yet bittersweet for Blossom below. Hearing Xue's request surrounded her heart with bitterness; she had just seen how Xue looked at Yao Guang and realized she could never enter his heart again. Yet she never expected Xue would go so far for Yao Guang.
Observing how things unfolded in court reminded Blossom of its once unbreakable strength and resilience. With Xue’s status allowing him to navigate through chaos safely, it was uncertain whether Star Lord Yao Guang would fare as well. The Jade Emperor had long coveted Yao Guang’s demonstrated magical prowess; thus it was likely he would send her to quell rebellions again. However, dragons were no ordinary ancient beasts—they thrived on battle and after years of recuperation were ready to rise again with formidable pressure. Furthermore, over these years, those so-called Soldiers had remained aloof and high above; for dragons like them, court seemed utterly vulnerable—ultimately leading to sacrifices not involving the Jade Emperor or his favored ministers. Now that Xue sought marriage with Star Lord Yao Guang, it was certain that out of respect for Xue, Jade Emperor would reconsider arrangements regarding Yao Guang. It seemed Xue had meticulously planned everything for her sake; Blossom felt a deep sorrow within herself—regretting why she hadn’t been as brave as Yao Guang back then. If only she had tried harder initially—wouldn’t things have turned out differently?
Listening to Xue's words left Shu equally astonished; he hadn’t expected Xue would directly request marriage from Jade Emperor regarding Yao Guang. After all, that night Xue merely promised to take good care of Yao Guang in his absence—today’s request exceeded Shu’s imagination entirely. However, this meant that Xue indeed fulfilled his promise; Yao Guang could live happily alongside him without returning to battle. His only concern now was whether Jade Emperor would grant this request. Shu glanced up at the Emperor; surely he understood what Xue intended—would he agree?
The Jade Emperor listened to Xue's words, feeling uncertain about what Xue truly intended. He needed to carefully consider the implications of Xue's statement. Star Lord Yao Guang was one of his most capable generals, and if he were to be taken away by the Wheel King, it would mean losing another strong ally in his court.
“Wheel King, I didn't quite catch what you just said,” the Jade Emperor said, hoping that it was merely a jest. Otherwise, he genuinely wouldn't know how to respond to such a request.
The surrounding deities began to murmur among themselves, speculating on the meaning behind Xue's words. His declaration had stirred quite a commotion; who would have thought that the esteemed Wheel King would actively seek to marry Star Lord Yao Guang? It was common knowledge that the Flower Fairy had long harbored feelings for the Wheel King, yet he had never accepted her affections. Now, he was here proposing to Yao Guang instead. The Flower Fairy was renowned as the most beautiful maiden in the court, proud and enchanting, while Star Lord Yao Guang, though not unattractive, paled in comparison. Moreover, Yao Guang was known as a calamity, a harbinger of disaster; his past ruthless actions were still fresh in their minds. One couldn't help but wonder if the Wheel King had spent too much time in the Underworld, losing his sense of basic aesthetics.
“Jade Emperor, I request that you grant me Star Lord Yao Guang as my bride.” Regardless of how others reacted or perceived him, Xue reiterated his earlier statement. After speaking with Shu, he believed this was the best course of action; only by doing so could he protect Yao Guang and help her avoid being embroiled in this war.
“Wheel King, do you not know that Star Lord Yao Guang is one of my favored generals? Our divine clan is on the brink of war with the dragon clan; seeking to marry my beloved general at such a time seems rather inappropriate,” the Jade Emperor replied. Were it not for the Wheel King's status, he would have sent Xue back to his Underworld without hesitation instead of patiently discussing matters with him.
Xue understood that the Jade Emperor would not easily agree to his request. If he did so without hesitation, Xue would find it suspicious.
“Jade Emperor, during my time with Yao Guang in the mortal realm, we developed feelings for each other. Naturally, I wish for us to be together. Such deep love cannot be easily severed by war. If only I had known that love is the most beautiful thing in this world.”
The Jade Emperor regarded the Wheel King standing before him. What a character he was! Though it sounded like he was defending himself or explaining his intentions, every word seemed to push the Jade Emperor toward a dead end. If he refused Xue's request, wouldn't he be seen as the villain who tore apart lovers? The Wheel King was not someone to be trifled with; the Jade Emperor thought carefully about how not to let others perceive him as opposing Xue. Otherwise, both the Underworld and Western Capital would surely exploit this situation.
“Wheel King, it is not that I do not wish to officiate your marriage with Star Lord Yao Guang; it is simply that our court faces imminent disaster. As members of my court, they must contribute to our cause. Star Lord Yao Guang, are you willing to wait until after this conflict concludes before marrying Wheel King?” The Jade Emperor shifted his focus toward Yao Guang.
Yao Guang had been listening anxiously to their conversation when suddenly asked for her opinion. It seemed that the Jade Emperor did not want her to marry at this moment. Although she felt reluctant to miss this opportunity, since the Jade Emperor sought her input, she could not disregard her brothers.
After some thought, Yao Guang replied to the Jade Emperor, “Jade Emperor, I am willing!”
Upon hearing Yao Guang's response, the Jade Emperor joyfully stroked his beard and said, “Excellent! My dear minister has indeed lived up to my expectations. Once we quell this rebellion against the dragon clan, I will host a grand wedding for you and Wheel King so that all beings across the three realms may attend.” The Jade Emperor was delighted; he knew that Star Lord Yao Guang would not dare defy him.
Listening to Yao Guang's answer made Xue realize that since he couldn't make headway with the Jade Emperor directly, he had turned to Yao Guang instead! With nothing substantial achieved thus far and feeling undermined by the Jade Emperor's maneuvering, it became clear that this Jade Emperor was indeed someone not to be underestimated.
“Wheel King, you see, since Star Lord Yao Guang has already made her decision, I wonder if you have any opinions?” The Jade Emperor still wanted to ask Xue.
“Nothing much, as long as Yao Guang is happy,” Xue replied. After all, this request was initially made to protect Yao Guang; no matter the outcome, as long as Yao Guang remained safe, that was all that mattered.
Yao Guang looked apologetically at Xue. She didn’t want it to be this way either, but with the Jade Emperor's earlier words, Yao Guang had no choice but to silently express her apologies to Xue in her heart.
“Since that’s the case, I promise Star Lord Yao Guang that once the war is over, I will personally arrange a marriage for Star Lord Yao Guang and Wheel King.”
“Thank you, Emperor,” both Yao Guang and Xue replied in unison.
Shu watched Yao Guang with concern. He had thought this time would finally allow Yao Guang to leave all of this behind, but unexpectedly, the Jade Emperor was still unwilling to let her go. Even with Wheel King personally asking for her release, since this method was ineffective, Shu silently pondered in his heart about other ways to help Yao Guang.
“Xue, just now in the hall, I rejected you. You’re not angry, are you?” After leaving the hall, Yao Guang asked Xue with a heavy heart. She had just publicly turned down Xue’s request in front of all the deities. Although it wasn’t her true intention, she still felt guilty for rejecting Xue’s sincere feelings.
“It’s fine. I understand that it wasn’t your wish,” Xue comforted Yao Guang. He knew she couldn’t refuse the Jade Emperor’s demands. Moreover, Yao Guang wouldn’t easily abandon her brothers and leave with him without any burdens. If that were the case, then she wouldn’t be the Yao Guang he knew. It was precisely because of her character that Xue continued to love her.
“Xue, you’re so kind!” Knowing that Xue must understand her feelings, Yao Guang felt a wave of emotion. Xue could have chosen not to get involved in this turmoil for her sake; yet here he was, not only involved but also being so forgiving towards her.
“It’s nothing.” Looking at Yao Guang’s smiling face, Xue thought that as long as she could continue to be happy like this, everything he did would be worth it. (To be continued.)
