Yama's Wedding
“Jun Ruo, what happened?” Xue gestured to Yao Guang and stepped forward to ask.
“I know that person,” Jun Ruo replied firmly. Although her mind was still in chaos, she clearly remembered that she recognized that person.
Hearing Jun Ruo's words, Yao Guang turned to look at Xue. What should they do now? What was going on with Jun Ruo?
“Oh dear, my Head of the Family, if you recognize them, then just acknowledge it. Why are you running away?”
Upon hearing Old Five's words, Yao Guang felt like prying open Old Five's head. What was going on in that thick skull? It was true that he had strength, but he clearly lacked brains.
“It’s fine. You go back and think about it. We’ll head back to the hideout first.” Seeing Jun Ruo in this state, it was clear that the acquaintance she recognized wouldn’t bring her any good memories. It was better to let her reflect on it. Yao Guang treated Jun Ruo differently than Liu Qing; Liu Qing was a friend in Yao Guang's heart, while Jun Ruo had shown her underlying ruthlessness. Yao Guang found it hard to feel a desire for friendship with Jun Ruo, even though she still admired her. Supporting such a Bandit Hideout as a daughter amidst dangers from all sides and ensuring the people there lived well—Yao Guang respected Jun Ruo's strength and understood the heavy responsibilities she bore. Yet, all of this made it difficult for Yao Guang to accept. Jun Ruo could have chosen a gentler approach, but she opted for the most shocking one, which was also the most effective.
Jun Ruo dazedly walked back with Yao Guang and Xue to where they had been before.
“Head of the Family, what happened? Did you see that person?” The brothers waiting at the spot rushed over as soon as they saw Jun Ruo returning, bombarding her with questions.
“Everyone step back; let her catch her breath first. Let’s all head back to the Bandit Hideout,” Yao Guang said as she looked at the crowd of heads appearing before her and quickly urged everyone to disperse.
“What’s going on?” Everyone looked at Jun Ruo’s absent-minded expression and felt a bit puzzled. How could this happen? They had gone out just fine without bringing back that wealthy merchant from before, yet their Head of the Family looked like someone had stolen her soul. However, since it was a matter concerning the Head of the Family, they didn’t dare pry too much and simply followed behind Jun Ruo.
Once back inside the Bandit Hideout, Jun Ruo locked herself in her room alone and refused to see anyone. This frightened everyone in the hideout.
“Old Five, what exactly happened? You went out with the Head of the Family; how did she end up like this?” The others were not too trusting of Yao Guang or Xue; all suspicion fell on Old Five who had gone out with her.
“I don’t know either! I just saw a very Strange Man, and then the boss turned into this,” Old Five said nonchalantly while glancing at the Mute Girl beside him.
“Strange Man?” an Aunt asked.
“Yes, a man,” Old Five replied, looking at the Mute Girl he hadn’t seen for a while. It seemed like she had lost a bit of weight in such a short time; he thought he should make sure she ate more. At this rate, a gust of wind could blow her away.
Upon hearing Old Five's confirmation, the Aunt's worried expression relaxed instantly. She clapped her hands and said, “Everyone, disperse! The Head of the Family is fine.”
“Second Aunt, what do you mean by that?” Everyone was confused and pressed Second Aunt for clarification. What did she mean?
Yao Guang was also curious. How could Second Aunt conclude that nothing had happened to Jun Ruo without witnessing everything herself?
Second Aunt, unfazed, revealed a knowing smile and said, “You all are just too concerned about our Head of the Family! Let me ask you this: is our Head of the Family a woman?”
“Of course!” Everyone felt somewhat dissatisfied with Second Aunt’s tone. They were genuinely concerned about the Head of the Family. Although she was tough and even more manly than some men, she was undeniably a beautiful woman.
“You all have such thick heads,” Second Aunt said, exasperated as she looked at them. “Didn’t Old Five just say that the Head of the Family encountered a man? That’s great news! Just look at the Head of the Family’s reaction…”
“Second Aunt, you’re clear about this,” some people still hadn’t caught on and anxiously asked.
Second Aunt looked at them and raised her hand to tap one person on the head. “How can you be so foolish?”
“Ouch! Second Aunt, why did you hit me?” the person yelped.
“Our Head of the Family is smitten!” Second Aunt declared confidently.
“Ohhh!” Everyone finally understood and broke into knowing smiles.
Thinking it over, they realized it made sense; their Head of the Family was indeed at an age for marriage. They had overlooked this and didn’t understand her feelings well enough.
"Alright, alright, everyone disperse for now. We can't disturb the Head of the Family," Second Aunt said with a smile, urging everyone to leave. The worries in everyone's hearts were set aside as they each went their separate ways.
Old Five took Mute Girl by the hand, planning to head to the kitchen to get her something delicious. Mute Girl looked at Old Five with complete trust, allowing him to lead her.
"Xue, something seems off with Old Five and Mute Girl," Yao Guang remarked, observing the way Old Five interacted with Mute Girl. It felt oddly similar to how he and Xue were together. Moreover, Mute Girl's shy demeanor made her look just like Old Five's newlywed wife.
"Yeah," Xue replied, glancing over just in time to see Old Five hurriedly pulling Mute Girl away.
"It seems that this usually rough-and-tumble Old Five is quite attentive when it comes to Mute Girl," Yao Guang said happily. To her, Old Five and Mute Girl seemed like a good match; Old Five's ruggedness complemented Mute Girl's delicacy perfectly. "Xue, don't you think so?" Yao Guang turned to ask Xue, but inadvertently noticed the deep worry etched on his face.
"What’s wrong? You were fine just a moment ago. What’s bothering you?" Xue was generally okay, but he always worried too much.
"Yao Guang, Old Five is a dead man, but Mute Girl is very much alive. They won't have any future together."
Yao Guang had heard such words far too many times before; back at Xiao Yao Villa, she had listened to Xue express similar thoughts.
For some reason, hearing those words again filled Yao Guang with an inexplicable irritation. She wanted to shout at Xue but silently suppressed her feelings.
Xue was lost in his worries and failed to notice Yao Guang's unusual silence at that moment. (To be continued.)
