Yama's Wedding
As soon as they entered the room, Yao Guang couldn't help but ask, "Xue..."
Before Yao Guang could finish the sentence, Xue interjected, "It's not safe here."
This statement shocked Yao Guang. "What happened?" Yao Guang was eager to know what was going on.
"You heard what the steward said earlier," Xue replied.
"Yes, but what does that mean?" Aside from harboring deep resentment towards that wealthy merchant—oh no, that eunuch—Yao Guang felt there was nothing particularly wrong with the other remarks.
Xue's expression turned serious as he spoke to Yao Guang in a grave tone. "In this world, using women born in yin years, yin months, yin days, and yin hours as materials for alchemy does not serve the purpose he mentioned earlier. The only function I know of using such methods is..."
"What function?" Noticing the difficulty in Xue's eyes as he spoke, Yao Guang asked.
"To become a demon."
Upon hearing this, Yao Guang was struck with horror. What? She couldn't have misheard; was Xue really talking about becoming a demon?
As if fearing that Yao Guang hadn't understood clearly, Xue reiterated, "That's right, to become a demon. I know of an ancient evil technique that has been passed down since antiquity. If one gathers nine hundred and ninety women born in yin years, yin months, yin days, and yin hours and uses their blood and hearts as materials for alchemy, one can create a pill that leads to becoming a demon. This pill accumulates cold yin energy; most people would likely perish from its backlash. However, if the target is a eunuch, it might be different."
"Because eunuchs inherently possess cold yin energy?" At this point, Yao Guang began to understand.
"Exactly. Moreover, eunuchs not only have cold yin energy within them; they also possess yang energy. These two energies typically cannot coexist, yet within their bodies, they harmoniously interact. Therefore, if they consume this pill, the likelihood of becoming a demon is greater than that of an ordinary person." Xue looked at Yao Guang approvingly and continued to elaborate on aspects she had not yet considered.
"Xue, do you think this person could be the same one who killed Jun Ruo and the others?" Yao Guang suddenly had a thought after hearing Xue's words.
"Why would you think that?" Yao Guang's statement opened Xue's mind. Although he had a broader perspective than Yao Guang, he had never considered such a hypothesis.
"There are very few sorcerers in the world, especially those skilled in dark arts. For some reason, I feel there is a connection between the two." In truth, Yao Guang wasn't very confident in her own words; it was just a sudden thought.
Upon hearing Yao Guang's words, Xue realized that although there was no factual basis for her idea, perhaps there really was some connection between the two.
"Yao Guang, I’m just thinking that maybe you’re onto something. The deaths of Jun Ruo and the others clearly weren’t just a simple case of soldiers hunting down bandits. If it were merely about eliminating bandits, why would they not spare their souls after death? Perhaps the mastermind behind this hoped to see Jun Ruo and the others transformed into Demons for his own use. But maybe he didn’t expect that they would inadvertently become Chimeras and Specters, escaping his control. He might have no choice but to seek alternative methods, or perhaps he himself doesn’t know how to make someone turn into a Demon, so he needs to experiment." Xue contemplated possible scenarios based on Yao Guang's earlier speculation.
Yao Guang also pondered the possibility Xue had just mentioned, growing increasingly alarmed. If there truly existed such a malevolent sorcerer in the world, and if he succeeded in mastering such dark arts, it could lead to a catastrophe for humanity.
"Xue, we must prevent this from happening," Yao Guang said excitedly as she grasped Xue's hand.
"Yes, naturally. If we capture this woman, the hidden mastermind will surely be unable to resist. That steward just now hinted at it; his master will arrive here in a few days. At that time, we can interrogate him thoroughly."
Hearing Xue's words brought a slight sense of relief to Yao Guang. No matter what, there was still a way to stop such events from occurring; it was a small blessing amidst misfortune.
Yao Guang felt reassured but failed to notice that Xue still wore a frown.
Although Xue and Yao Guang hadn't traveled far together, they seemed to have already uncovered many strange occurrences. Was the impending catastrophe truly about to begin? If what was foretold came to pass, where would he go from there?
Xue looked at Yao Guang, who was feeling happy about finding a way to prevent the disaster and did not notice the expression in Xue's eyes as he watched her.
If, if it really is like that, would I be able to take action? Xue asked himself in his heart, but even he had no answer to this question.
He would never allow himself to feel that way! Xue could not control the future; he could only grasp the present well. Yao Guang lifted her head and smiled at Xue. In that smile, Xue felt a moment of daze. What would the future hold? Even a deity could not predict it. So, it was better to focus on the present. Right now, Yao Guang was still by his side, and he still had many opportunities to remedy things slowly. Perhaps that prophecy would never come true after all. After all, it was just a prophecy, not reality, right?
Xue smiled as he walked toward Yao Guang.
"Xue, what are you thinking about? I've called you several times, and you didn't respond." It was clear that after their earlier discussion, Yao Guang was in a good mood.
"I was just lost in thought while looking at you."
Xue often blurted out one or two unexpected comments that left him unsure how to continue the conversation. Now, what should have been an ordinary remark turned into something that made Yao Guang start to daydream.
"Xue, you really are..." Before she could finish her reprimand, Yao Guang looked at Xue and couldn't bring herself to continue.
"I'm going to the kitchen to get something to eat." Yao Guang quickly found an excuse and hurriedly left Xue's side. Who knows what embarrassing thing Xue might do next? Yao Guang thought it was better to run away quickly.
Xue watched Yao Guang's hurried figure. No matter how many times he teased her, she always remained this shy.
Shaking his head, Xue smiled as he looked at Yao Guang. But this was fine; if they could continue like this forever, that would be perfect. (To be continued.)
