Yama's Wedding
The crowd fell into a long silence, even Yao Guang, who had always disliked Xiao Yao Hao, remained quiet. The weight of such heavy emotions made her unable to find words to blame Xiao Yao Hao. Yet, letting him off the hook left her feeling that Liu Qing deserved better.
Now, there were truly no comforting words left.
"Did you notice anything unusual before you died?" Xue asked Roux.
"No, I only remember seeing Liu Qing that night, and she looked just like she did when she died. She wanted me to go with her, but I refused. Then she lunged at me, and after that, I don't remember anything. When I regained consciousness, I was already in the Underworld, and then I was brought here," Roux replied.
Listening to Roux's words, Xue pondered. She had thought that bringing Roux and the others up would reveal who had killed them. However, it seemed that even the dead did not know how they had met their end.
“Liu Qing, have you ever harmed them?” Xue suddenly asked Liu Qing.
“Xue!” Yao Guang called out his name, her tone tinged with a hint of dissatisfaction for the first time. Xue was taken aback and glanced at Yao Guang, who looked displeased with her. It seemed that Yao Guang truly cared for Liu Qing. This was the first time she had ever contradicted him.
“Liu Qing was with me last night; you know that,” Yao Guang said, unable to understand why Xue would suspect Liu Qing. They had been together all night; how could Liu Qing have had the time to harm them? Besides, if anyone were to kill them, it should have been Xiao Yao Hao.
Liu Qing gently shook her head at Yao Guang, stopping her from saying more. “King Yan, I was with Yao Guang last night, and even if I had the intention, I wouldn’t have the strength.”
Upon hearing this, Xue paused for a moment, his eyes widening as he glanced at Liu Qing. So that was it.
Understanding dawned on him, and he made a decision in his heart.
“Alright, let’s leave it at that for today. Roux, Xiao Yao Jia, you two sisters may go to the Underworld to be reincarnated. From now on, matters of the mortal realm will have no bearing on you.”
“Young Master Xue, oh no, King Yan, may I speak with Liu Qing alone for a moment?” Roux requested of Xue.
Xue looked at Liu Qing, who nodded slightly in agreement, granting Roux's request. The three of them stepped outside to talk.
After they left, Yao Guang immediately jumped up from her chair and ran over to Xue. “Why did you suspect Liu Qing just now? She is so kind; how could she possibly be cruel enough to kill someone?”
Facing the fuming Yao Guang, who was determined to seek justice for Liu Qing, Xue felt that this angry demeanor of Yao Guang resembled the old version of her, the one who used to cry uncontrollably.
"Come on, come on," Yao Guang urged as she noticed Xue merely staring at her without saying anything.
"Yao Guang," Xue regained a serious expression and pulled Yao Guang to a nearby chair. "In this world, many things and many people are not as they appear. Even those who seem kind in front of you may not be equally kind to others." Looking at Yao Guang, Xue couldn't help but ponder. This child had experienced so much in the human world yet seemed to have not learned how to protect herself. He had never asked her if life among humans was difficult or how she managed to endure the fall from divinity to such a state.
"Yao Guang."
"Yes, what is it?"
"You..."
Just as Xue was about to ask, the three individuals suddenly returned.
"King Yan, thank you for giving us time to say our goodbyes," Roux expressed her gratitude towards Xue.
"If there’s anyone else you wish to bid farewell to in the human realm, I can allow you that opportunity." Perhaps influenced by Yao Guang, Xue unexpectedly made this statement. Immediately after, he regretted it; he had always been clear about public and private matters. How could he break the rule in the Underworld that spirits should not communicate with the living because of them?
"No need, I appreciate your kindness, King Yan. The only one I miss in the human world is my twin sister, but unfortunately, she..." Roux looked affectionately at Xiao Yao Jia.
At that moment, Xiao Yao Jia was saying goodbye to Yao Guang. "Hey, you should be happy now. I'm dead, so I won't be bickering with you anymore." She waved her fist at Yao Guang.
"Yeah right! I'm absolutely thrilled that you're finally dead!" Yao Guang shot back defiantly.
Xue and Roux watched the two like children and couldn't help but smile. Such innocence was truly precious. Despite their constant bickering whenever they met, neither harbored any ill intentions toward the other.
The gentle and mature Roux had really taken good care of her twin sister.
"Alright, you go now. Make sure to reincarnate well and be happy in your next life," Yao Guang advised as she watched the Roux sisters slowly fade away.
"Sure, I will. In my next life, I won’t run into you again, so don’t come looking for me! I won’t welcome you!"
A beam of light took the two away, and the air seemed to linger with Xiao Yao Jia's arrogant words.
"Xue, in the next life, those two will be happy, right?" Yao Guang asked, looking up at Xue.
"Yes!" In this life, the two sisters had not done anything wrong, so they would definitely live peacefully in their next life.
With Xue's answer, Yao Guang felt much more at ease. Although she always bickered with Xiao Yao Jia, she couldn't help it; it was as if she wouldn't be happy unless they had a quarrel. Perhaps Xiao Yao Jia felt the same way. Yet, she still regarded her as a friend. The thought of them being able to reincarnate happily brought Yao Guang some comfort.
"Liu Qing," after asking about Xiao Yao Jia and her sister, Yao Guang noticed Liu Qing standing alone nearby, feeling an indescribable emotion within her. From earlier until now, Liu Qing had been silent, not saying a word.
"Liu Qing, you should stay in this world for now. There are still things that need to be clarified here. Once everything settles down, you can return to the Underworld with me," Xue said.
"Understood," Liu Qing replied softly. "Can I have some time alone?"
Seeing Liu Qing's demeanor, Xue understood that she was feeling down and said, "Go ahead. If there's anything, I'll summon you again."
Liu Qing took a step back and turned to leave. Yao Guang wanted to chase after her, but Xue ld her back. "Let her be alone for now; there has been too much happening."
Yao Guang watched Liu Qing's lonely figure and restrained herself from following. She turned to Xue and said, "Fortunately, you're still by my side."
