Yama's Wedding
“Liu Qing!!!!!!” Before Yao Guang could respond, the surprised exclamations of the Roux sisters filled the air.
Liu Qing looked up at the two of them.
Roux rushed forward and hugged Liu Qing tightly, “It’s really you, it’s really you.” The two were overwhelmed with excitement.
Liu Qing stood there silently, allowing them to embrace her without any struggle.
Yao Guang stepped forward and pulled the two away. Liu Qing's eyes were filled with confusion and a hint of pain.
“Yao Guang, is it true? Did I really die like that?” Liu Qing asked in disbelief, her voice trembling with caution, causing Yao Guang's heart to ache.
Yao Guang squeezed Liu Qing's hand gently. “I can’t be sure if it’s really you, but I believe there’s a strong possibility it is. Perhaps the trauma before your death made you forget many things, but maybe forgetting is for the best.” Unsure how to comfort Liu Qing, Yao Guang thought that perhaps it was better for Liu Qing to live in her own world without knowing the truth than to face reality clearly.
“Then tell me, is this girl really me?” Liu Qing looked at the Roux sisters with tear-filled eyes.
“Liu Qing, have you lost your memory?” Roux was taken aback after hearing Yao Guang's words, realizing that Liu Qing had lost her memories after her death.
“So this girl is truly me!” Although Liu Qing had sensed from Roux's earlier reaction that the girl in the story was indeed herself, hearing it confirmed at that moment made her heart ache. No wonder she had been wandering around this villa without thinking of leaving; no wonder she felt an inexplicable familiarity when she saw Xiao Yao Hao but hesitated to get too close.
At that moment, Roux had already informed Xue about Liu Qing's situation. She looked at Liu Qing and asked, “Liu Qing, do you want to remember these things?”
Liu Qing raised her head. As Roux observed Liu Qing's gaze shift from confusion to gradual clarity, Liu Qing wiped away her tears. “No, I don’t want to.”
“Why not, Liu Qing? Are you just going to forget us?” Xiao Yao Jia chimed in excitedly from the side.
Yao Guang shot an annoyed glance at Xiao Yao Jia. How could this person be so oblivious? She was so different from her sister.
Xue smiled as he watched Yao Guang disdainfully look at Xiao Yao Jia. Wasn't this child just like that himself?
"I just didn't react in time when I heard your words. Perhaps that girl you mentioned was truly someone from my past life, which is why I felt such empathy. However, ever since I learned that I am a ghost, even though I don't understand why I've lost my memories, I've been living quite happily. Each day, I can pass through without a care in the world. And since I am already dead, what does my life on earth have to do with me? If I truly died like that, then I believe I would have wished to live again rather than carry all this pain!" Liu Qing finished speaking and smiled at Roux. Maybe at first, hearing those words was painful, but by the time she came to her senses, Liu Qing felt that it didn't matter much anymore. It was as if she had just listened to a very sad story and cried for a moment; that kind of life seemed to belong to someone else, and that kind of pain felt distant. Since one died in despair, why not live with hope?
Roux looked at Liu Qing's smile and suddenly laughed as well. It turned out they had been too stubborn. Yes, Liu Qing was Liu Qing; she had known all along that this woman was inherently free as the wind. What kind of person had her elder brother missed out on? Roux began to sigh for Xiao Yao Hao.
"What happened next?" Xue's sudden question left the women in the room momentarily stunned and confused.
"Oh dear, Xue is asking what happened after Liu Qing died!" Yao Guang jumped in to explain when she saw their puzzled expressions.
So that's how it was; such mindless words were indeed hard to comprehend.
Xue nodded lightly, tacitly agreeing with Yao Guang's explanation.
"Later on, my brother held Liu Qing's body for a long time."
Liu Qing took her last breath in her brother's embrace. They all watched from afar, none daring to step forward. They only saw Liu Qing whisper something in her brother's ear before she passed away. He sat there with her body for three nights; the clan members came once and demanded he hand over the body so they could throw it into a mass grave. But he went mad; whenever someone approached, he would slash at them with his sword. Eventually, they had no choice but to leave.
Exhausted, he finally collapsed, allowing them to separate the two of them. In the end, Liu Qing did not receive a proper burial. Even her remains were lost in the mass grave.
When her brother woke up and learned of this, surprisingly, he did nothing—just locked himself in his room and sat there silently for a long time.
Others were unaware, but Roux had seen it; every night, her brother would be absent from the Mansion for several hours. He would sit among the corpses in the mass grave. She had gone there to pay respects to Liu Qing and found her brother sitting alone amidst the bodies, staring blankly at the graveyard without making a sound. His expression was one of pain so profound that he could no longer cry. They didn't know the story between him and Liu Qing; they only observed how gentle he was with her since she arrived at their manor—how attentive he was when she struggled with their food. He had never cooked before but secretly learned how to make dishes she liked by shyly asking the kitchen staff for help. She had seen him standing outside Liu Qing's room after she fell asleep, gazing into the darkness inside. She had once joked about why he didn’t go in to check on her. That man’s eyes sparkled with happiness as he told her, "Why do you think I like her so much? Just knowing she's here brings me joy."
Such affection was abandoned at that moment when he lost Liu Qing. Roux couldn't understand nor did she want to blame her brother; for him, the greatest punishment had already come.
Later on, everyone noticed that her brother had changed. He took over the manor within two months and absorbed all of Matriarch's former subordinates into his own ranks. Once his power was consolidated, it came as no surprise that his first act was to kill all those elders who had pressured him. Although it wasn't done openly, Roux knew it was his doing; otherwise, how could the family shrine have suddenly caught fire? And why did no one escape?
That night, her brother went out again. Roux knew he must have returned to the mass grave to tell Liu Qing that he had avenged her.
After avenging himself, the elder brother began to repeatedly investigate the events surrounding it. There were many doubts, but everything had happened so coincidentally that it caught everyone off guard. No matter how much he investigated, there was no progress. The servants who had been close to the Matriarch were all executed by those people for failing to protect their master, leaving not a single survivor. The dagger that Liu Qing used to kill the Matriarch was indeed something from Liu Qing's room. All leads had been severed, and no matter how much the elder brother refused to believe it, there was nothing he could do; Liu Qing could only bear this crime and die.
Later on, the elder brother likely felt a lack of motivation or hope. He became indifferent to everything, even to us siblings. He no longer smiled at us like he used to; although he preferred to smile, that smile no longer held the warmth it once did.
"Liu Qing, your brother truly loved you," Roux suddenly said to Liu Qing without even looking at him.
Gradually, the elder brother stopped caring about matters in the manor. Many times, he would sit alone in his room. It was during this time that strange occurrences began happening in the manor. At first, it was just some animals dying inexplicably; lively creatures in the kitchen were found dead each morning without any wounds or signs of poisoning. Initially, no one paid attention, but soon people started dying as well. The first to die was a maid who had served Liu Qing, and her death was as if she had seen a ghost. More and more people died, each with a similar terrifying expression on their faces. The elder brother began investigating but soon ceased; there wasn't much to investigate anyway. Those people died like those animals—without wounds or poison—except for the horror etched on their faces. Fear spread among the mansion's residents; everyone was terrified and rumors circulated that Liu Qing had returned for revenge. How else could one explain these strange occurrences?
"It wasn't me; I didn't do anything," Liu Qing explained.
"I initially thought it was you, but now that I see you, I know it's definitely not you. Even if you don't remember what happened before, you're still the carefree Liu Qing I once knew, and Liu Qing wouldn't do such things."
The people in the manor were frightened and sought out many shamans and Taoist priests, each claiming they could exorcise evil spirits. At first, when the elder brother heard this, he seemed excited and engaged. He kept asking those priests if they could catch the ghost they spoke of. I once overheard him asking one priest if he could hand over any captured ghosts to him. Perhaps he thought Liu Qing was that evil spirit and hoped to see him again.
Unfortunately, none of the priests survived; every time they decided to catch a ghost or claimed they had captured one, they were found dead in their rooms with death scenes identical to those of previous victims in the manor.
The elder brother was disappointed—not because of the priests' deaths but because he realized he would never see Liu Qing again. Eventually, regardless of which priest came by, he would merely watch them as if they were a joke. Even when more people died, he remained numb; nothing stirred any ripples within him anymore.
So when you arrived, the elder brother looked at you as if watching a farce; perhaps long ago, he had already died along with Liu Qing.
