He was called away by a phone call. That call was made by someone I had asked to contact him. The purpose was to divert his attention, giving me a chance to escape. Sure enough, as soon as he left, I felt alive again. I took deep breaths of fresh air, feeling grateful to be alive!
I began to think about how to get away, but how could I do it without him noticing? After pondering for a while, one person came to mind—Wei Ruoming's ex-wife. That woman had been driven away by me, or rather, forced out.
I knew Wei Ruoming still had feelings for her, but she was the type who fell deeply in love; she loved him to the point of obsession. So when Wei Ruoming grew tired of her, she chose to leave. He felt guilty about it and gave her quite a bit of property.
If she were willing to help me, I could definitely escape from Wei Ruoming's grasp. But would that woman really help me?
I dialed Xia Ruoxi's number. On the other end, a lazy voice answered, "Hello, who is this?"
I replied, "Is this Xia Ruoxi? I'm Ma Jia. I'd like to meet you, if that's okay."
There was a moment of silence before she said, "Sure."
I expected her to hesitate or refuse, but her agreement came surprisingly quickly. So I arranged to meet her. On the appointed day, I finally met Xia Ruoxi.
She looked completely different from what I remembered. The Xia Ruoxi in my memory was a down-to-earth, rustic heiress. But now, standing before me, Xia Ruoxi exuded simplicity and elegance, radiating a mature charm.
If I had previously been a mere vase trying to compete with her for attention, now she was a queen. A queen who stood tall, her every gesture emanating an air of grace. I felt small and inadequate in her presence. I lowered my head, unable to meet her gaze.
Yet she was patient; she extended her hand for a handshake and said, "Hello, Ma Jia."
I looked up at her. The woman before me had gentle brows and deep, captivating eyes. I couldn't believe Wei Ruoming could ever lay a hand on someone like her.
I reached out my hand awkwardly and stammered, "Y-You, hello."
I expected her to respond coldly or even be hostile towards me. Instead, she said, "I've heard about you. You're quite clever and have managed to rise to prominence."
I was taken aback by her compliment and surprised that she had pinpointed my intentions right away. Since that was the case, I decided not to hold back any longer.
"Xia Ruoxi, I would like to ask you for a favor."
"What kind of favor?"
"Help me escape from Wei Ruoming."
Xia Ruoxi smiled and said, " Ma Jia, you should thank me."
I was stunned and asked, "Why?"
"Because you helped me break free from Wei Ruoming's grasp!"
I was stunned.
It turned out she had known all along!
She looked at me and said, " Ma Jia, did you think I didn't know your intentions? I’ll tell you, from the very beginning, I saw right through you."
"Then why..."
"Because I wanted to break free from Wei Ruoming's control! But I never had the chance until you came along."
"You used me?"
"That’s one way to put it," Xia Ruoxi said as she took off her jacket.
I was taken aback.
Her arms, her legs—every exposed inch of skin was covered in scars.
There were fresh wounds and old ones.
Some were from Wei Ruoming's fists when he was drunk.
Others were inflicted by tools he used.
I stared at Xia Ruoxi, unable to say a word.
Xia Ruoxi looked at me and asked, " Ma Jia, do you know the story of the farmer and the snake?"
I nodded.
