I ran out through the back door, my heart racing. Behind me came the sharp sound of leather shoes striking the ground, accompanied by low murmurs of conversation. I hid behind a pile of discarded metal barrels, peering through the gaps.
Moonlight poured in through the shattered glass windows, gradually revealing several figures dressed in suits and ties. The man at the forefront was tall and moved with an air of elegance. But his gaze sent chills down my spine—it was a cold indifference born from witnessing life and death, as if he were sizing up prey. I noticed his right hand hanging slightly down, the outline of something bulging beneath his suit jacket—likely a gun.
A shiver crept up my spine. In that moment, I truly realized the dangerous whirlpool I had been drawn into. Behind those glamorous financial figures lay raw violence.
Once I found a safe place to hide, I opened the note that CEO Zhang had given me. It contained an address and a line that read: "Everything is part of a larger scheme; be cautious."
Back at the farm, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. CEO Zhang's words made me aware that this situation was far more complicated than I had imagined. What truths were hidden behind those numbers?
More importantly, in this seemingly random investigation, everyone was playing their own game of chess. I was merely a pawn on the board.
In the days that followed, Professor Luo and I analyzed the clues we had received from CEO Zhang. The situation was much more intricate than we had anticipated.
"These people are playing a very clever game," Professor Luo said, pointing at the complex flowchart of funds on the computer screen. "They use seemingly normal transactions to conceal a massive scam."
"How exactly do they operate?" I leaned in to examine the data.
"For example this one," Professor Luo magnified a set of transaction records. "They set up a shell company in Hong Kong and then used it to finance operations in Singapore. Once the money reached Singapore, it was dispersed into dozens of investment accounts before being consolidated into a trust fund in the Cayman Islands. To an ordinary person, these transactions look like hieroglyphics."
I nodded. "So they exploit the complexity of the financial system to hide their funds?"
"Exactly," Professor Luo sighed. "I've worked at the Securities Regulatory Commission for thirty years, and this is the first time I've seen such a sophisticated scam."
Just then, Uncle Yang suddenly pushed the door open. "Not good, someone is here!"
I quickly peered through the gap in the curtains. Two black sedans were parked at the entrance of the farm, and several men dressed in suits and ties stepped out. The leader was the cold man I had seen that night at the factory.
"How did they find this place?" My heart raced.
"Someone must have leaked information," Professor Luo said, his expression grave. "We can't stay here."
"But the evidence..."
"Don't worry," Professor Luo took out a USB drive. "I've made multiple backups. Right now, the most important thing is to ensure your safety."
Uncle Yang led us out through a secret passage in the backyard. He had opened this route during his youth to evade pursuit, and I never expected it would come in handy today.
But things were far from over. The next day, we saw on the news that CEO Zhang had "committed suicide" in custody. Shortly after, Director Li also changed his testimony, claiming that his previous statements had been coerced.
"They're tightening the net," Professor Luo said with a serious expression, "but it also means we've hit a nerve."
At that moment, I received an encrypted message:
"The truth cannot be buried forever. If you want to know more, meet at the old place tonight at 8.
-- Zhao"
"Zhao? Who is that?" I asked, feeling a bit confused. Too many mysterious figures had appeared in my life lately. Every encounter could be a trap, and every act of trust might lead to betrayal.
But Professor Luo's reaction surprised me. He suddenly stood up, as if he had heard some unbelievable news.
"It's Zhao Deming!" Professor Luo's voice trembled. "That old fox has shown up at this time."
