My heart raced. What had they discovered? Or was this just a test? Thinking it over calmly, returning to the company would be like walking into a trap. But if I didn’t go back, it might only solidify their suspicions.
Taking a deep breath, I decided to return to the company and face the situation head-on. No matter what happened, at least I would see who my opponent truly was.
Upon arriving at the company, I was immediately taken to CEO Zhang's office. Before this, I had only seen this legendary figure from a distance at the annual meeting. He was a man in his fifties, known for his stern demeanor.
Today, there were two strangers in CEO Zhang's office, dressed in suits and ties, their expressions frighteningly serious.
“Chen Siyuan,” CEO Zhang stated bluntly, “these two are investigators from the Securities Regulatory Commission. They have some questions for you.”
One of the investigators pulled out a document. “Mr. Chen, we found that your personal account short-sold Future Tech stocks and options between September 28 and October 3, with a trading amount exceeding five million. These transactions coincidentally occurred just before Future Tech's financial issues were exposed. How do you explain this?”
I was stunned.
This was completely fabricated! During that time, I hadn’t made any trades at all. Wait, September 28... wasn’t that when I started investigating Future Tech?
Clearly, someone had meticulously set me up to make me the perfect suspect for insider trading.
“Wait!” I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady. “There must be some misunderstanding. Those trading records aren’t mine at all. And speaking of Future Tech, I actually discovered some interesting things—would you two be willing to hear about them?”
“Enough!” CEO Zhang suddenly interrupted me. “ Siyuan, don’t make this worse than it already is. This is a plea agreement; sign it and the company can offer you a chance for leniency.”
Looking into CEO Zhang’s eyes, everything clicked into place. This wasn’t an investigation; it was a setup. They weren’t looking for the truth; they were searching for a scapegoat.
And the scapegoat is me.
"I want to see my lawyer." This was the only response I could think of.
For the next few hours, I was locked alone in a conference room. My computer and phone had been confiscated. I tried to contact my lawyer but was told to wait until the investigation was over.
Just when I was on the verge of breaking down, my lawyer finally arrived. Lawyer Li was my college roommate's cousin; although we weren't very close, he was all I had to turn to for help now.
"The situation is dire," Lawyer Li said after reviewing the so-called evidence. "The materials they provided look very authentic. But if you are innocent, we still have a chance."
I recounted everything that had happened over the past few days, including the mysterious USB drive.
"This case is more complicated than it seems," Lawyer Li said, furrowing his brow. "You might be caught up in a massive financial fraud scheme. That evidence is your only shield, but it could also bring you even more trouble."
"What should I do?" At that moment, I felt more helpless than ever.
Lawyer Li thought for a moment. "First, we need to protect the evidence. Second, we must find clues that can prove your innocence. Lastly, we might consider exposing this case to the media, but that would be a last resort."
Just then, the door to the conference room swung open. CEO Zhang walked in with an inexplicable smile on his face.
" Siyuan, the people from the Securities Regulatory Commission have temporarily left. However, we still have a lot to discuss."
Exchanging a glance with Lawyer Li, I knew that the real test was just beginning.
