In an instant, the two individuals were in the spotlight, each charging in a different direction, ruthlessly slaughtering their foes. The advanced Zombies now faced two furious Super Experts, akin to children encountering giants, utterly defenseless.
Lin Yi wielded the mixed Crimson Energy Blade as if it were a divine weapon, unstoppable by anyone. With just one swing, dozens of Humanoid Monsters were cleaved in half! Although the Humanoid Monsters, deprived of their underground energy source, wouldn’t die immediately, their combat effectiveness was significantly diminished, posing no hindrance to Lin Yi.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
At this moment, with a series of muffled thuds, Zhao Pei, caught up in the thrill of battle, found slicing the Humanoid Monsters in two to be uninteresting. Instead, he began smashing the backs of their heads with his axe. While those yellow sand-formed heads were indeed hard, they offered no resistance against Zhao Pei's immense strength.
However, as the distance between the two grew, they found themselves surrounded by Humanoid Monsters attacking from all sides without each other’s support!
Now Lin Yi and Zhao Pei could only fight for themselves. Around them piled heaps of writhing humanoid beasts, but that did not stop other Humanoid Behemoths from relentlessly charging forward.
The two fought like machines of slaughter, executing a continuous command to eliminate enemies as they swung their weapons in nearly monotonous motions, cutting down one Humanoid Monster after another.
“Shh—”
After slaying another one, Lin Yi felt a sense of numbness wash over him. In his memory, this seemed to be the nine hundred and ninety-eighth humanoid beast he had slain. No wait, it should be the nine hundred and ninety-ninth; initially, he had even burned one into wisps of blue smoke.
Lin Yi rubbed his sore shoulders; he hadn’t felt this way in a long time. He had never repeated a single action for such an extended period. These Humanoid Monsters only surpassed the peak of ten Star Levels in strength, yet their true power was utterly insignificant against Lin Yi.
Yet it was this very group of monsters that now instilled fear within him. It felt as if he were trapped in a nightmare. Only by eliminating these Zombies before him could he find release. This terrifying sensation was so overwhelming that Lin Yi felt an inexplicable pang of sorrow within him.
Zhao Pei's figure had long been swallowed by the vast Yellowish Humanoid Behemoths; apart from occasional shouts from Zhao Pei, Lin Yi could only confirm his survival by sensing his aura.
In the Yellow Sand Space, time ceased to exist. The sky remained a deep blue; even the white clouds seemed like mere props from a movie, never moving on their own.
Lin Yi felt his hands growing increasingly stiff; his movements were no longer as fluid as before. A few times he lost focus and nearly got caught by a humanoid beast that almost slammed him into the sandy ground.
Now Lin Yi had to not only control the energy of the blade in his hand but also maintain a thick Ice Layer beneath his feet to prevent those recently severed humanoid monsters from drawing energy from the yellow sand and rising again.
Time seemed to stretch endlessly, and Lin Yi felt that aside from the instinctive urge to kill, he had no strength left to think about anything else.
His arms no longer felt like his own; in fact, it seemed as if his entire body was foreign to him. There were several moments when Lin Yi considered giving up the struggle.
But he was unwilling; there were still many things he had yet to accomplish. How could he resign himself to dying here, without even a person to collect his body?
“Lin, I feel like I can't hold on much longer…”
At that moment, Lin Yi heard Zhao Pei's voice in his ear, weary and strained, as if a regular person had gone three nights without rest. Each word was heavy with exhaustion.
Lin Yi looked around and realized that he hadn't heard Zhao Pei's voice in a long time; they were now separated by dozens of kilometers.
The towering Yellowish terrain obscured their line of sight, making the world seem so monotonous that he felt disinclined to open his eyes.
“Wait!”
Lin Yi narrowed his eyes and vanished from sight. The Humanoid Behemoths lunging at him missed entirely, their clumsy bodies entangled as they struggled to rise.
In the next moment, Lin Yi reappeared beside Zhao Pei. The once vibrant Zhao Pei now wore a face of fatigue, swinging his massive axe with all his might to fend off the approaching Humanoid Behemoths.
“How long have we been fighting?” Zhao Pei's voice was hoarse. This desolate place had almost no water source, which contributed to Lin Yi's exhaustion. The Ice Layer he had created was formed from his own energy, consuming a tremendous amount of it.
“It must have been an entire night!”
Both of them felt dazed; after such an intense night of combat, they sensed a deep weariness emanating from their very souls.
“It seems he’s confident enough to toy with us like this; the reinforcements probably won’t arrive!”
The last glimmer of hope faded from Zhao Pei's eyes. They had been holding on, waiting for a powerful savior. But now it was clear that they were out of luck; the strongest among them had not come to their aid and were likely entangled in other matters.
"Old Zhao! Don't be so hopeless. If we weren't born great, we should at least die like heroes!" Lin Yi adjusted his mindset. Regardless of whether there was hope, they were still alive, and that meant miracles could happen.
A bitter smile appeared on Zhao Pei's face, but he quickly straightened up and said, "Right! We should live as exceptional individuals and die as heroic spirits! I've been a coward for half my life; this time, I'll show them I'm not so easy to bully!"
Seeing the expression on Zhao Pei's face, Lin Yi was momentarily taken aback before patting him on the shoulder. "Let's go all out this time!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Lin Yi retracted the Ice Layer he had formed with his energy. The stiffness in his body almost completely vanished as he did so.
Zhao Pei followed suit, pulling back the swirling black mist. Just then, Zhao Pei's expression suddenly changed, and his eyes turned a deep scarlet!
In the next moment, Lin Yi noticed Zhao Pei's body swelling rapidly; his limbs and torso expanded, and even his originally neat short hair grew long in an instant, reaching his waist.
In just a brief moment, Zhao Pei transformed into a towering figure over two meters tall, exuding a fierce aura. His once handsome face was now covered in dense black stripes, and sharp fangs protruded from the corners of his mouth.
Zhao Pei now resembled a giant beast with greenish fur and sharp teeth, bearing little resemblance to a human.
"This is my Zombie True Form!" A chilling voice emerged from his massive mouth.
"Zombie True Form?" Lin Yi was taken aback, unsure of what Zhao Pei meant.
"Under normal circumstances, advanced Zombies can achieve their Zombie True Form. However, those that grow by continuously devouring flesh do not possess this ability; only through gradual evolution can they attain Zombie True Form! As far as I know, I'm the only one with this capability; the others are too numerous to control such powerful energy!"
Zhao Pei explained coldly, his fierce face filled with indignation. Sensing something amiss, Lin Yi continued to ask, "Then why didn't you use your Zombie True Form earlier?"
Upon hearing Lin Yi's question, Zhao Pei did not respond immediately. Instead, he swung the massive axe in his hand and smashed a nearby Humanoid Behemoth into a pile of pulp, causing Lin Yi's heart to tremble at the sight.
"In the beginning, Zombies were nothing more than decaying corpses, mere shells of the living. However, as their strength increased, they began to resemble humans more and more. This transformation was due to their ability to effectively control the Zombie Virus that was eroding their bodies, converting the virus into power that further propelled their evolution.
Thus, Zombies became increasingly human-like because their control and utilization of the Zombie Virus grew stronger. According to rumors, once a Zombie evolves to its peak, it can completely transform the Zombie Virus into energy, becoming a true organic being capable of reproduction.
However, during this process, a Zombie can also reverse its appearance. By releasing all the controlled Zombie Virus and permeating every cell in its body with it, it can gain immense power.
As Lin Yi listened to Zhao Pei's explanation, he continued to slice through the approaching Humanoid Behemoths. Upon hearing the last sentence, he looked up and asked, 'So, you are completely controlled by the Zombie Virus now and can never return to your former self, right?'
