Cook spoke rapidly, recounting the entire history of the Mercenaries in just half an hour. After listening, Lin Yi felt a strange sensation in his heart, as if his fate had always been intertwined with the Mercenary Alliance. He even began to doubt whether his path had been predetermined from the very beginning.
Sensing Lin Yi's thoughts, Cook said, "The fact that you transitioned from a researcher to a Mercenary was not by chance.
We first took notice of you when you awoke from your injuries in Paris and struck back against the Dark Night Vampire Mercenary Corps. It was then that we recognized your uniqueness and the kindness that lay deep within you, even to the point of being too soft-hearted.
However, these qualities are not what one would expect from a qualified Mercenary. We continued to observe you, and it seemed you were reluctant to pursue a career as a Mercenary. So, after we developed someone else to be by your side, our attention on you diminished significantly.
Until that stunning performance of yours in Rome, where you battled against the Zombie Army alongside Renesmee and several young vampires, we decided to reevaluate your potential and included you in our assessments until you became the Mercenary King. Ultimately, we chose to include you among the final ten candidates, but then events unfolded too suddenly. We didn’t have enough time to nurture your abilities further, so later on…”
“So later on, even though you knew I wasn’t a Zombie and hadn’t betrayed anyone, you still didn’t come forward to help me, right?” Lin Yi reacted quickly, realizing that his growth had been manipulated at every turn; clearly, he had been calculated by the Mercenary Alliance many times.
Cook waved his hand dismissively. “Your first crisis was something we at the Mercenary Alliance helped with only partially. Remember Lucy? That girl was an undercover Mercenary; she didn’t know your true situation but ultimately helped you escape once.
Being a qualified Mercenary Leader is no simple task, especially in times of crisis when there is so much to manage. Moreover, the Mercenary Alliance was not in a good position at that time. Most of our forces were tied up dealing with Zombies. High-level combatants had to remain at Base Camp to prevent being wiped out by Zombies.
While we were aware of your circumstances, we were helpless against how powerful the Zombies had become; their influence ran deep, and our actions were constantly suppressed. I never expected them to cultivate so many loyal agents in just a few short years!
In fact, regarding your Vice Chairman token, we initially had the power to reclaim it. The reason we left it with you was also to signal that we were on your side. Of course, there are quite a few Zombie agents within the Mercenaries as well—like the former Judgment Division Grand Butler Dracula!
Now, while the Mercenary Alliance is at its peak strength, it is also facing its most critical moment. Perhaps you may not be the best Mercenary, but you are certainly the most responsible one!”
At this point, Lin Yi understood clearly; he was indeed being chosen as the next President of the Alliance. However, this presidency came too suddenly and felt suffocating! If only the Mercenary Alliance had helped him sooner, many lives could have been saved.
“How do you know I would agree to be this President?”
Lin Yi retorted childishly; no one is uninterested in power, and he was no exception. He simply didn’t want to be used as a pawn again or take on more responsibilities without reason.
“No one is more suited than you! It’s like fate—you can’t escape it!” Cook’s expression showed no signs of change; perhaps he had anticipated Lin Yi’s reaction all along.
“Fate?” A hint of coldness flashed in Lin Yi's eyes. “If it weren’t for the Zombies, I would never have any connection with this at all—what fate are we even talking about?”
A flicker of hesitation crossed Cook's eyes before he quickly regained his composure and continued: “You can choose to ignore it now, but if I die, would you be willing to watch all your teammates get killed by Zombies?
What the Mercenary Alliance needs now is someone responsible to lead us; if things continue unchecked, this planet may truly fall under Zombie control.”
Hearing Cook's somewhat melancholic words, Lin Yi suddenly felt a pang of guilt. Living on this land, he naturally had an obligation to protect it.
"Alright, I promise!"
Lin Yi didn't think for long; just seconds after Cook finished speaking, he made his commitment. Some issues were ultimately unavoidable, so it was better to face them head-on.
"Hahaha, great!" The lingering concerns in Cook's heart dissipated. He knew that someone like Lin Yi would take his promises seriously and follow through.
"I should retire soon, but before I do, I need to accomplish something!" When Cook reached this point, a fierce killing intent flashed in his eyes. As the highest leader of the Mercenary group, the aura he exuded made even Lin Yi bow his head in respect.
"Is it very dangerous?"
Looking at Cook's demeanor, as if he were handing down a legacy, Lin Yi couldn't help but feel a tightening in his chest. He understood Cook's strength; if even he couldn't handle certain matters, wouldn't that put Lin Yi in even greater danger?
"Think about the thousands of years of history of the Mercenary Alliance and the countless strong individuals we've nurtured. Yet, we still can't compete with the speed at which those Zombies are developing!"
Cook sighed with a sense of heroism fading into twilight upon hearing Lin Yi's words, leaving Lin Yi puzzled.
"Before the Zombie Crisis, the high-end combat power in this world was held by Mutants. Their individual combat abilities varied greatly, but each had its own unique strengths. Moreover, they could enhance their genetic evolution through various means to gain even greater power!
However, such methods are limited to certain ranges of evolution; after all, even the strongest Mutants still require willpower. No matter how advanced human methods are, they cannot surpass the creations of nature! Each country has its own Mutants, also known as Ability Users. Once discovered, their potential is tapped into until they become nearly god-like in strength!
Our Mercenary Alliance has also absorbed many Mutants and cultivated them. However, we have always been at a disadvantage, which is why Mercenaries have lacked the confidence to challenge other teams!
But with the emergence of the Zombie Virus, it truly broke the deadlock between both sides; now Zombies reign supreme. Their more frenzied tactics have propelled their rapid advancement..."
"What is our current top-tier strength? Why haven't we seen you take action against their powerful ones?" Lin Yi was naturally familiar with Ability Users; his team was initially composed mostly of them. It was only later that the widespread appearance of Potential Gene Drugs led others to start using them for strength enhancement.
As Ability Users, they were favored from birth; they evolved faster through Gene Drugs and could reach even greater heights.
"The human world has thousands of years of history but cannot match their few years of strength—this is indeed a disgrace! Now, the only ones who can truly deal with those two Zombie Kings are me and Reck that old guy!"
"Reck? That name sounds familiar!" A flash of recognition crossed Lin Yi's mind, but he couldn't recall where he had heard it.
"Yes, they are from an ancient family. Reck is also a guardian of this generation's mainstream human society; he is a born fighter whose entire growth process has been focused on enhancing his strength. Now his power is at least equal to mine!"
Once known as the War God, your War God Suit is derived from Reck's title, though not many are aware of this. The War God Suit represents a technological revolution for contemporary society, and many people place great importance on it.
Cook casually remarked, standing as a top-tier powerhouse; relying on external tools felt shameful to him. Although the War God Suit significantly enhanced the combat capabilities of ordinary people, Cook inherently looked down upon such things.
"I see. If it weren't for the War God Suit back then, many things might have changed!" Lin Yi didn't notice Cook's tone but instead recalled how Black had saved his life several times. Even though Black was merely an artificial intelligence machine, Lin Yi felt genuine gratitude.
"Well, Lin Yi, President, it's time to announce your existence to all Mercenaries!" Cook smiled, not elaborating much but urging Lin Yi to reveal his identity.
"And what about you?" With the current President standing right there, Lin Yi was unwilling to let anyone attempt a power grab.
"The President's position isn't lifelong. If I give you the President's seat, then you are the President, and I’m just an ordinary old Mercenary!" Cook said nonchalantly.
...
Half a day later, the Mercenary Alliance learned from top to bottom that they had a new President—over a million Mercenaries were now aware of this change. However, aside from the First Speakers in several war zones who knew who the new President was, ordinary Mercenaries remained in the dark. Those Mercenaries still able to act freely were the elite among elites; those previously hastily formed Mercenary groups had either been wiped out by Zombies or confined within various fortresses, unable to gain any traction.
The higher-ups of the Resistance also learned about Lin Yi becoming President. However, they only sent an envoy to Corsica to express their congratulations. Given that many among them had previously participated in some misunderstandings and flag-waving against Lin Yi, they now felt somewhat guilty. Nevertheless, the Resistance also gifted Lin Yi a yellowish Energy Crystal, which was a significant boon for someone like him who could absorb various attributes of energy for personal use.
Yet Lin Yi, now President, found it hard to feel happy. A piece of news Cook shared with him before leaving plunged his previously calm heart back into a state of agonizing indecision.
