"What's wrong? Still don't believe me?" Cook said, noticing that Lin Yi showed no signs of relaxing. He clapped his hands, and suddenly, the entire space tightened, and a figure appeared right in front of Lin Yi.
"Wang Kai, Vice Chairman!"
Lin Yi was taken aback for a moment before realizing that the person before him was indeed Wang Kai, the First Speaker of the Australia War Zone!
"When did you arrive?"
It was only then that Lin Yi noticed Wang Kai's strength had increased another level. His attention had been entirely focused on Cook, and he hadn't even noticed Wang Kai's arrival.
"The speed at which Chairman Lin is progressing is truly humbling. In just a few short months, you've broken through to a new limit!"
Wang Kai felt a bit frustrated himself; he had been "forced" by Cook to come here without understanding what was happening. Now, seeing Lin Yi, he discovered that the latter's strength had already surpassed his own.
"Speaker Wang, please tell him my true identity!"
Cook interrupted Wang Kai's moment of frustration; he didn't have time to indulge in nostalgia with the two of them.
Upon hearing Cook's voice, Wang Kai shivered slightly, as if recalling something unpleasant. Cook's face revealed a hint of amusement as he secretly blamed himself for having kept his identity so secretive that even the Vice President of the Mercenary Alliance had only heard his name but never actually met him.
However, Cook had his reasons for doing so. But now he had to step in to resolve some issues; the Zombie Crisis had completely threatened the foundation of the alliance.
Wang Kai glanced at Lin Yi and said with a wry smile, "This person is indeed our President. However, I believe that aside from a few close individuals, there are probably no more than ten people in this world who have seen our President."
Lin Yi naturally believed Wang Kai. After all, his daughter was currently out there slaughtering zombies alongside him. Back when Lin Yi was still weak, Wang Kai had already possessed the strength to eliminate him. Clearly, he hadn't done so; instead, he had helped Lin Yi regain his strength and improve his combat power!
Cook was quite astute; upon seeing that Lin Yi accepted Wang Kai's words, he signaled to Wang Kai to leave. Wang Kai understood and took his leave, creating space for further communication between the two while also ensuring their security.
The First Speaker of Australia and the Vice President of the Mercenary Alliance were actually acting as guards for someone else. It seemed only this rare opportunity to meet with President Cook warranted such respect!
As soon as Wang Kai left, Lin Yi felt a ripple of spatial fluctuations around him, and then he was cut off from the outside world. As someone with Spatial Ability, it required someone of significantly higher power to sever his connection with the outside. Clearly, Cook was that person!
"Lin Yi, don't be anxious; let me finish!"
Seeing Lin Yi tense up again, Cook quickly explained. He didn't want to end up in a confrontation with Lin Yi after all.
"Alright, Cook... um... President." Lin Yi thought for a moment and chose to trust him. He had just discovered that although he couldn't contact the outside world, he was confident he could break through this spatial barrier.
"Except for our own spatial domain, I fear there's no place that isn't monitored by that Old Guy!"
After Cook finished speaking, he glanced thoughtfully at the void. At that moment, they were still in the grand hall of Linyi Manor, and even outside on the honor wall, those smiling faces were clearly visible. Cook's mastery over space had undoubtedly reached an extraordinary level.
"President, if you have something to say, I'm all ears!" Seeing Cook's wary expression, Lin Yi felt a sense of relief wash over him.
Cook nodded with a smile and began to recount a secret history about Mercenaries.
The existence of Mercenaries can be traced back to ancient times. Back then, many principalities did not have large standing armies, and those who roamed around, living by the sword as hired Mercenaries naturally became the backbone of these nations. Essentially, external large-scale battles relied on Mercenaries; they would simply be paid for their services.
As for larger conflicts, they required more financial resources to sustain them. However, in earlier years, the primary employers of Mercenaries were those principalities; as long as they paid, they wouldn't care much about anything else.
However, as the presence of Mercenaries became more apparent, countries gradually realized that having such a powerful force nearby was quite unsettling. Eventually, several kings from major principalities united to eliminate the surrounding Mercenary forces!
Although the kings' plans were meticulously crafted, a few Mercenaries managed to escape and spread the news to other regions where Mercenaries resided.
This caused panic among the Mercenaries. They had long grown accustomed to such a lifestyle; now that their existence was under threat, what would they do? Consequently, these Mercenaries gathered together to discuss their future.
In the end, numerous Mercenary factions united to form the earliest Mercenary Alliance! The newly established Mercenary Alliance felt empowered and prepared to retaliate against the principalities that had previously hunted them down!
Unexpectedly, despite their usual fierce rivalries, these principalities began to unite against a common enemy when faced with greater threats and ended up in a stalemate with the Mercenary Alliance.
Later on, seeing that they could not conquer these nations after prolonged assaults and recognizing that their logistical support could not match that of an entire country, the Mercenary Alliance secretly signed an agreement stating that they would not unite against any single nation! The principalities had no intention of continuing their relentless pursuit of the Mercenaries either and naturally agreed.
As a result of this conflict, the power of the Mercenaries significantly diminished. However, this marked the first alliance in the world of Mercenaries and can be considered an early prototype of what is now known as the Mercenary Alliance. Over the following thousands of years, there were many divisions and reunions within it, but it continued to grow stronger. Nonetheless, throughout it all, the influence of Mercenaries remained largely unrecognized.
There were also several major disputes between Mercenaries and nations later on, leading to more restrictions. One such issue was the establishment of a President.
The Mercenary Alliance's collective combat power was incredibly formidable; naturally, nations did not want such a powerful entity to exist. Ultimately, both sides compromised: the President of the Mercenary Alliance would exist only in name—there would be a President present but generally without leadership authority. Only in times of life-and-death crises could the President reclaim command.
Through continuous evolution, the President of the Mercenary Alliance often remained behind the scenes; most people would never meet the President in their lifetime. Those who did see the President were usually just a few individuals responsible for various matters close to him. Furthermore, the selection of the next President was personally designated by the current President without needing approval from any major councils within the Mercenary Alliance!
In this way, the President is, to some extent, merely a representative, while the Mercenaries often act independently, making it difficult for them to develop cohesively. However, after two thousand years of development, the Mercenaries have produced many talented individuals. Even without a unified leadership, they have gradually combined to form a whole, becoming an Underworld that stands in contrast to the real world.
The upper echelons of the Mercenaries have always adhered to a principle: maintaining balance. As a result, various nations have not sought to eradicate the Mercenaries entirely. Some countries even maintain the tradition of hiring Mercenaries, and the market for them in war-torn areas remains substantial.
The system of the Mercenaries continues to improve. Although the core structure remains unchanged, its scale keeps expanding. A complete system has formed, including the cultivation of Presidents. Each President has typically undergone a promotion process from the grassroots level to higher positions because the President has developed into a symbol of the Mercenary existence. Cook's strength is undoubtedly the greatest force within the Mercenary Alliance.
Whenever an organization expands significantly, it harbors ambitions for power; the Mercenary Alliance is no exception. To ordinary people, they may seem like scattered Mercenaries, but those in high positions across nations are well aware of their true strength.
However, in reality, there is more of a coexistence between both sides. The relationships among various nations and major Mercenary regions are not monolithic. Where there are interests, there will be conflicts; thus, the Mercenary Alliance and various countries often infiltrate and utilize each other.
Recently, as national powers have strengthened, their efforts to combat the Mercenary Alliance have intensified compared to before. Many times, Mercenary groups have even been labeled as terrorist organizations. Of course, some actions taken by these groups are indeed looked down upon by the Mercenary Alliance itself.
Nevertheless, this Zombie Crisis has provided an opportunity for the Mercenary Alliance to redeem itself. Those Mercenaries who had long been lurking underground or operating under different identities in various countries can finally step forward with legitimacy. Of course, this comes at a great cost but has also led to a more rational understanding of Mercenaries among ordinary people.
In times of crisis, there is an even greater need for unified and strong leadership. Over the years, Cook has appeared in various roles at different events to find the next President as soon as possible.
Before the Zombie Crisis, the requirements were not so strict; Cook already had an ideal candidate in mind. However, with the onset of the Zombie Crisis, both combat capability and leadership are essential. Moreover, this person must be legitimate and possess a certain level of prestige on some fronts; thus, finding a suitable candidate becomes increasingly challenging.
Now humanity stands at a critical juncture between life and death; moments of confrontation could arise at any time. Therefore, as an ancient superpower on this planet, the responsibility of the Mercenary Alliance cannot be underestimated!
