A strong wave of dizziness constantly assaulted Lin Yi's mind, as if a voice was persistently telling him to just sleep, to let go and rest.
The sensation grew increasingly intense, and Lin Yi nearly collapsed to the ground several times, on the verge of succumbing to sleep. However, at that moment, he still retained a flicker of clarity in his mind; he knew he had not yet truly escaped danger—peril still awaited him.
At this point, Lin Yi's strength had nearly drained away. Just standing on the ground made his legs tremble! It was his first time leading tens of thousands of people through spatial travel, and the experience was truly overwhelming.
He lost track of time, but eventually, Lin Yi managed to shake off the intense dizziness. As he opened his eyes, he was startled to find himself in a desolate wilderness. In the distance, he could see a towering city gate; estimating its height, he figured the city walls were at least thirty meters tall!
During the Zombie Crisis, defensive zones were hastily constructed everywhere, with massive walls built in a short span of time. However, since the crisis had passed, many places had dismantled their walls. After all, such structures did not align with contemporary aesthetics; they gave off an impression of being trapped in a cage. Freedom has always been regarded as one of the most important values across all eras, even when faced with life-and-death threats.
Lin Yi glanced around at the people nearby; they were all in a state of unconsciousness. Despite his best efforts to protect them from the surrounding effects, something had still gone wrong.
However, their breathing remained steady. Clearly, they had merely fainted. Lin Yi observed that they were in a place filled with ruins; it was evident that this had once been a gathering spot for humans, but it had yet to recover.
Looking around again yielded nothing new. At that moment, Lori and Caesar began to awaken one after another. Theoretically, they possessed the greatest combat strength and resistance against the negative effects of the Alternate Dimension. Soon after, the others began to wake up as well.
These individuals had only been impacted by Spatial Power; their abilities showed no significant decline. Ironically, Lin Yi found himself among the weakest.
Renesmee was the last to awaken. She had previously gathered her strength to unleash her ice-based Ability, which had taken a toll on her. Nicolas had woken up earlier and remained by Renesmee's side throughout.
"I'm sorry, Ice Sister," Nicolas said upon seeing Renesmee's pale face. As a man, it pained him deeply to watch his beloved suffer.
"Nick, don't say that. I have the ability to do this; why shouldn't I?" Renesmee reached out and gently wiped away the tears from Nicolas's eyes.
Nicolas chose not to argue further; Renesmee did not believe she should always live under a man's protection simply because she was a woman. Understanding this about her meant Nicolas knew there was no need for empty reassurances.
“Caesar, Lori, keep a lookout around us,” Froeman said, his years of living on the run having sharpened his instincts.
At that moment, Pearl Amigal, who had been sitting cross-legged on the ground, suddenly toppled to one side. Lin Yi's heart raced as he hurried over and caught Pearl Amigal before he hit the ground.
When Lin Yi saw Pearl Amigal's face, his heart sank. The once dark and aged visage was now pale and ashen, a thick aura of death surrounding him.
Lin Yi reached out to check Pearl Amigal's nostrils and was shocked to find no breath at all. Reluctantly, he touched the carotid artery in Pearl Amigal's neck; it felt cold to the touch, and that vital artery had lost its last flicker of life.
Pearl Amigal was dead!
Lin Yi's mind buzzed with disbelief. Among the Masai Tribe, he was most familiar with Pearl Amigal and Gal. But now, because of his arrival, Gal's wife had been struck down by a Laser Beam, and now Pearl Amigal lay lifeless before him.
In that moment, Lin Yi's thoughts raced. He quickly realized that the orderly evacuation of over thirty thousand people had been thanks to Pearl Amigal exhausting himself using his mesmerizing techniques. To control so many people, he had sacrificed what little life he had left.
The Masai people, who had been in a daze, gradually regained their senses after Pearl Amigal's death. Their last memories were of entering the Alternate Dimension. As they came to their senses, they soon discovered they were in an unfamiliar environment.
“What happened? Where are we?” someone in the crowd asked anxiously, fear creeping into their hearts as they took in the desolation around them.
Lin Yi felt a sense of dread; the only ally he could rely on, Gal, was lying motionless on the ground and remained silent. Guilt weighed heavily on Lin Yi as he found himself lacking the courage to approach Gal.
“Yes, Captain Lin, what’s going on? We were just in the tribe; where is this place?” An elderly man, trembling and about the same age as Pearl Amigal, stood up unsteadily. The elderly often find it hard to part from their homeland. Upon waking up in such a strange place, confusion filled his mind.
Lin Yi’s expression turned troubled. Before he could respond, a nearby plump woman crawled over and lifted half of Pearl Amigal’s body off the ground while crying out, “High Priest! High Priest!”
“What happened to the High Priest?”
"Ah, the High Priest has passed away!"
"This can't be true! The High Priest was just fine a moment ago, how could this happen?"
Upon hearing that Pearl Amigal had died, the crowd erupted into chaos, rushing over in a frenzy to gather around. Lin Yi wanted to intervene, but given the current situation, it would likely only incite their anger further.
The first to discover Pearl Amigal's death was a plump woman who pushed her way to Lin Yi, her face twisted with rage as she said, "Captain Lin, I believe you owe us a reasonable explanation!"
For the first time, Lin Yi found himself at a loss for words. He could only stare at the crowd, feeling as if something heavy had lodged itself in his chest, an uncomfortable pressure squeezing his lungs.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are deeply sorry for the death of Mr. Pearl Amigal. We are also distressed by this incident. However, now that he is gone, our priority must be to avenge Mr. Pearl Amigal; only then can we honor his memory!"
Seeing Lin Yi's anxious expression but his inability to speak up, Froeman shook his head and stepped forward to defuse the situation.
"Hmph! It’s too late for revenge now that he’s gone!" A middle-aged man waved his arm and shouted. But upon seeing Lin Yi, he instinctively backed away. Others might not know it, but everyone was aware of Lin Yi's formidable strength.
Froeman sighed and said, "A person cannot be brought back to life. Even if you kill us all, Mr. Pearl Amigal will not return. Therefore, I have one million Contribution Points here—an anonymous offer—enough for you all to find a new place to settle."
In the next moment, a golden card suddenly appeared in Froeman's hand—it was the well-known Contribution Points card. Since the Zombie Crisis, Contribution Point Cards had become popular; after all, they were issued in the name of the United Nations and held the highest credibility and security. Those who had lived through the crisis believed it was essential to keep their Contribution Point Cards, which is why this temporary currency policy remained.
"Hahaha! One million Contribution Points can buy back our High Priest's life? If we give you one million, will you all immediately take your own lives?" A middle-aged man stood at the center of the crowd, his face filled with grief and anger.
Lin Yi squinted at this man and realized he bore some resemblance to Pearl Amigal. Understanding dawned on him; if someone were willing to spend one million Contribution Points for the life of someone close to him, Lin Yi would ensure they learned that arrogance leads to dire consequences!
"Please don’t misunderstand; this is all I can offer as compensation for Mr. Pearl Amigal’s death. It cannot buy back his life."
Froeman patiently introduced himself to the group, knowing that if he did not play a significant role within Lin Yi's team, there would be no reason for him to continue following Lin Yi.
"Enough of this nonsense! Unless we all die, you won't be leaving here without giving us something!" The middle-aged man's face suddenly twisted into a fierce expression, his complexion turning red.
"Ten million. Take it and go wherever you want. Otherwise, you won't see a single cent from us, and we'll leave immediately. I doubt you can stop us!"
At that moment, a cold voice cut through the tension as a woman in white slowly approached. Her elegant yet frosty demeanor could only belong to Renesmee.
"This..." The middle-aged man stared in shock at the nearly transparent Contribution Point Card that had suddenly appeared before him, his earlier excitement replaced by disbelief.
"We agree!"
Just as the middle-aged man was still hesitating, a hoarse voice rang out. Everyone turned to see Gal, who had been lying on the ground in silence.
However, his face was devoid of expression, and his gaze towards Lin Yi and the others was filled with coldness.
"Captain Lin is so generous. If we keep dragging this out, we'll look foolish. This amount of money could buy a person's life anywhere, don't you think?"
Gal picked up the Contribution Point Card that still carried Renesmee's chill and lowered his head.
"Gal..." Lin Yi was at a loss for words. Human hearts were always the hardest to read. From now on, his relationship with Gal—and with the entire Masai Tribe—would never return to what it once was.
