A blinding beam of light descended, and for a moment, Zhao Pei even thought this was truly a punishment for his sins!
This was a surge of violent energy he had never witnessed before, an energy that sent shivers through him!
Just when he was about to give up, he suddenly saw the true nature of that energy, and the expression on his face changed to one of utter shock.
"To make me die is not so easy!"
The raging beam of light was already plunging downwards, and Zhao Pei knew he had no time left. At that moment, the veins on his forehead bulged, and his short hair stood on end as if electrified!
In the next instant, a thick, dripping black liquid surged from Zhao Pei's body. This black liquid quickly expanded, coalescing into a solid shield-like circular object that firmly blocked the formidable energy beam!
"Boom—"
At the moment the two energies collided, a violent explosion erupted! This energy burst forth with an intensity even more frenzied than that generated by two miniature missiles, shooting out in all directions!
In an instant, a vast vacuum zone spanning several kilometers appeared around them. Within this vacuum, only two figures remained suspended in opposition!
Zhao Pei hovered above, his entire body charred black. The tattered black robe that once covered him had now become mere strips of fabric hanging from his form.
In contrast, the figure inverted above him was shrouded in swirling white gas, with sparks of electricity erupting from various parts. This person was Lin Yi. Using his body as a conductor to draw lightning into himself, Lin Yi prepared to strike!
Lin Yi had just realized that he could not defeat Zhao Pei but felt he had no way to escape! Then he saw the abundant lightning and calculated its generation time. He directly drew forth the most powerful bolt of lightning through his body using the Silver Soul and Silver Soul Battle Blade, then charged straight at Zhao Pei's head!
However! Lin Yi never expected that what he thought would be a devastating blow to Zhao Pei would have no effect at all!
At this moment, Lin Yi felt as if his entire body was about to explode. Even with the War God Suit helping him absorb most of the lightning energy, the force from that brief moment—enough to obliterate a Steel Fortress—was still too powerful. Even though they shared the burden of the lightning's energy, Lin Yi's body struggled to withstand the damage inflicted by such overwhelming power.
He was so exhausted that he couldn't even move a finger, fearing that it might suddenly snap off. The situation for Black wasn't any better; despite being a high-tech machine, the energy surge had inflicted severe damage on it.
If it hadn't been for Black's desperate attempts to channel the lightning energy and deliberately avoid striking the power system, Lin Yi would have already fallen headfirst into disaster.
Suddenly, Zhao Pei, who was hovering below, looked up and flashed a wide grin, revealing a mouth full of white teeth.
In the moment Lin Yi was caught off guard, Zhao Pei's form suddenly trembled and then, without warning, plummeted downward!
Lin Yi instinctively reached out with his hand to help, but due to his extensive injuries, his reaction speed was nowhere near what it used to be. He could only watch helplessly as Zhao Pei fell away.
"Sir, we don't have much energy left; we need to hurry back!" Black, now resembling an intelligent robot, emitted a sound of pain akin to that of a human due to its severe bodily damage.
Lin Yi let out a frustrated "hmph" through his nose. Black took control of the War God Suit and swiftly turned toward the last defense zone, which was uncertain if it still existed.
A minute later, Lin Yi arrived at the stronghold, but all he found were hordes of Zombies feasting on human remains—there wasn't a living soul in sight! The various armors scattered across the ground had been dismantled beyond recognition and were no longer capable of any defense.
"Silver Soul, come forth!"
Lin Yi's anger surged; despite his serious injuries, his Psychic Power remained intact!
With a fierce shout from Lin Yi, two Silver Soul Battle Blades shot out from his back with a whoosh!
Immediately, the Silver Soul Battle Blades seemed to be controlled by an invisible force as they flew straight into the midst of the Zombie horde.
Brilliant Blade Qi erupted instantly, unleashing a violent wave of energy that spread outwards. The Zombies still indulging in their "feast" didn't even realize what had happened before they met their demise!
"David! Number 19! Where are you?"
Lin Yi called out into the darkness, knowing that the two possessed the War God Suit. Unless they encountered a Nine-Star Combat Power Zombie, there was no way they couldn't escape!
"Boss, we're pinned down by two Eight-Star Zombies! But you go save the others first; we can hold on!"
Just when Lin Yi thought David and the others were in trouble, he suddenly heard David's familiar voice, though it was filled with urgency, indicating that their situation was perilous!
Lin Yi sighed inwardly, realizing he was too late! The situation was clear; over a thousand people had already fallen victim to the Zombies!
At that moment, several Zombies below suddenly spotted Lin Yi and began to roar at him! Lin Yi activated his Psychic Power and quickly assessed that they were all Five-Star combatants.
In an instant, Lin Yi's mind raced as his Psychic Power surged. Two Silver Soul Battle Blades shot forth like lightning, piercing through one Zombie after another as they sped toward the strongest of the group.
"Thud thud thud thud—"
A series of metallic sounds echoed as the blades pierced flesh and bone. Before the Five-Star Combat Power Zombies could react, their heads were severed by the ghostly Silver Soul Battle Blades.
In the next moment, Lin Yi blurred and darted toward David and Number 19's location!
Two minutes later, Lin Yi appeared by the seaside! At that moment, two violent energies were leaping into the air, colliding hard with two frail figures above!
It was two Eight-Star Combat Power Zombies engaged in battle with David and Number 19. However, these Eight-Star Combat Power Zombies couldn't fly! David and Number 19 relied on the flying capabilities of their War God Suits to keep up with them for so long.
The two members of the Mercenary team led the Eight-Star Zombies away from ordinary people to prevent them from getting hurt. Little did they know that those they desperately tried to protect had already become food for the Zombies!
"Sir, you can't fight anymore!" Black felt the anger radiating from Lin Yi and immediately reminded him.
Lin Yi's body was indeed much stronger than that of an ordinary person, but the power of lightning was overwhelming, something no human could easily withstand!
"David!"
"Number 19!"
Lin Yi shouted twice, and only then did the two people who were entangled with the zombies notice his arrival. At that moment, the two zombies, upon seeing Lin Yi, suddenly stopped their attack and turned to flee in opposite directions.
Just as David and Number 19 were about to chase after them, Lin Yi shouted, "Don't chase! The others... they're all gone."
At this point, Lin Yi's eyes twitched slightly. This was his first significant loss; it could almost be described as a complete rout!
There are no generals who win every battle, but when a campaign fails, someone must take the blame! A wave of fear surged through Lin Yi's heart. He felt scared and unsure of how to face those who had high hopes for him upon his return.
"Boss, what were you doing just now?" David looked at Lin Yi with confusion. The once god-like Mercenary King now appeared charred and disheveled.
Even during the siege of countless zombies, Lin Yi had never looked this disheveled. But now, on an island, the revered Lin Yi seemed as wilted as a frostbitten eggplant.
"Just now? I encountered the demons of hell!" Lin Yi chuckled lightly. Although he appeared casual about his failure, it weighed heavily on him.
Nearly two thousand people had been devoured by zombies right under Lin Yi's nose; this was something he found hardest to accept!
"Hearing from Sister Qiweng, Zhao Pei seems to have been the boss's friend but later turned into a powerful zombie?" David leaned in closer, speaking uncertainly.
Lin Yi nodded, feeling a sense of melancholy as he said, "He has already reached Star Level ten in combat power. We just had a fight, and if he hadn't held back at the beginning, I might have been killed."
David and Number 19 exchanged shocked glances. Lin Yi, the Captain and Mercenary King, had nearly been killed by a Zombie!
"Then he's too strong. It's no wonder we failed," David remarked. Since joining the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, they had never experienced such a crushing defeat, even when facing formidable enemies.
"Calling headquarters, this is Lin Yi. We request to return; my coordinates are..."

An hour later, Lin Yi returned to the Armed Division headquarters with David and Number 19. The news of their complete annihilation seemed to have wings, spreading throughout the streets.
Lin Yi would not forget that when he wearily appeared at the entrance of the Armed Division, a boy looked at him and threw a stone at him, his eyes filled with resentment. Lin Yi did not understand why the boy harbored such feelings, but he felt too exhausted to argue.
What saddened Lin Yi even more was that despite his severe injuries, the headquarters did not prioritize his treatment but instead focused on reporting the battle situation! The man who had seemed somewhat kind, his Future Father-in-Law, sat high up in the main position, frowning as he listened to Lin Yi's report.
At that moment, Lin Yi felt as if he were looking at a stranger. He covered his most injured arm while answering their almost accusatory questions.
War, regardless of victory or defeat, is a crime!
