Three months had passed since Lin Yi and Li Qiweng's engagement ceremony. During this time, although incidents involving Zombies occasionally surfaced, the relentless efforts of various nations had effectively silenced them. With the absence of Zombie leadership, other Undead Creatures were quickly eradicated as well.
However, after nearly three years of living under the shadow of Zombies, the current state of peace was not something people could easily adapt to. Whenever news about Zombies emerged, panic would ensue. Malicious individuals deliberately spread false information, causing chaos that even the most earnest attempts at clarification could not quell.
Despite the efforts of governments to calm public fears, the reality was that while nine out of ten reports about Zombies were false, a single true report could shatter the psychological defenses of ordinary citizens. Even with increased crackdowns on rumor-mongers, the spread of such news remained unstoppable.
Lin Yi received the latest intelligence indicating that numerous grassroots organizations aimed at preventing Zombie attacks had sprung up like mushrooms after rain. These organizations, which had not existed during the global Zombie crisis, were now growing rapidly. Their influence was expanding to such an extent that various governmental institutions in several countries were affected for different reasons.
Especially when news about Zombies surfaced, these grassroots organizations transformed into fierce warriors, willing to destroy everything in their path to hunt down the so-called Zombies. Yet often, these situations turned out to be based on false reports. Nevertheless, many still believed that such a paranoid response was justified.
Some scholars noted that after nearly a century without a global disaster, people's minds had become numb. This contributed to the rapid spread of the Zombie Crisis, which nearly obliterated human civilization. Although some behaviors might have been excessive, they at least heightened awareness and prevented helplessness in the face of disaster.
Most Survivors held a supportive stance towards this viewpoint post-disaster. The governments also tacitly accepted this situation since their existence was meant to serve the public.
Lin Yi knew there was a similar organization in Lion City called Global Vanguard, formed by a group of young people. Their goal was to eliminate the last Zombie on Earth and eradicate every trace of evil from the planet.
Who hasn’t been young? Who doesn’t want to be spirited? Lin Yi merely smiled at such endeavors. After all, his own ideal once revolved around world peace; looking back now, it seemed almost laughable.
Now in midsummer, as Lin Yi stepped out of the building, he was immediately hit by a wave of heat. Despite his impressive abilities, he found it hard to endure nature's wrath. He promptly activated his micro air conditioning system, feeling a refreshing coolness envelop him.
“Zombie! Catch that Zombie!” Just as Lin Yi began to feel more comfortable, a sudden scream echoed from nearby.
With his Psychic Power extending his Consciousness over ten kilometers around him, Lin Yi detected no abnormalities at first. However, he soon spotted a disheveled individual running frantically while being pursued by an angry mob hurling objects at him.
In an instant, what had been a clean and orderly street was now littered with debris. Lin Yi frowned; how could such violent behavior occur in a society governed by law?
The next moment, he swiftly moved and appeared right in front of the disheveled man.
"Ah—" Caught off guard, the Slovenly Man was terrified and collapsed to the ground, his dirty face displaying sheer panic as he looked at the young man before him.
Lin Yi finally got a good look at the Slovenly Man, who appeared to be around fifty years old, similar in age to his father. However, his sallow complexion and gaunt features suggested long-term malnutrition. At that moment, there was a faint trace of Scarlet at the corner of his mouth, accompanied by a subtle metallic scent of blood.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi reached out his hand, intending to help the man up. Black had already informed him that this person could not possibly be a Zombie!
"Don’t come any closer… please…" To Lin Yi's surprise, the man recoiled as if electrocuted, retreating repeatedly as if he had been triggered by something.
Lin Yi frowned. At that moment, a cacophony of voices erupted nearby; an angry crowd was shouting incessantly, "Catch it! It’s a Zombie!"
"Sir, this situation seems a bit difficult to handle!" The War God Suit on Lin Yi suddenly flickered, leading to this outcome.
"What’s so difficult? Can these people really do anything outrageous?"
At this point, Lin Yi suddenly sensed several sharp blades hurtling toward the Slovenly Man. In an instant, his Psychic Power surged forth, knocking all the knives to the ground!
Finally realizing Lin Yi's goodwill, the Slovenly Man scrambled behind him and clutched his arm tightly, pleading, "Save me! They want to kill me!"
Lin Yi was taken aback for a moment before an invisible aura of menace began to spread around him. Over the years, he had developed an intimidating presence without even trying.
His Mercenary group had been awarded the title of Justice Brigade by the Global Security Conference. Although Lin Yi considered himself not purely good-hearted, he could not stand by while chaos unfolded in public!
"That guy up ahead! Quickly take down that Zombie before it bites you!" Suddenly someone shouted a warning from afar but did not approach Lin Yi.
Regardless of the circumstances, Lin Yi had fought his way out from mountains of corpses and seas of blood; if he did not control that aura of menace around him, ordinary people would inevitably feel an unsettling chill.
"Why does this person seem familiar…" murmured someone in the crowd. These individuals believed they represented justice and were not easily deterred merely by Lin Yi's intimidating presence.
"Looks familiar, but this guy has some guts, hugging a Zombie without a hint of fear!" said a young man in his twenties wearing glasses.
Lin Yi glanced over; the young man appeared somewhat thin, his eyelids drooping slightly as he stared intently at the scruffy middle-aged man behind Lin Yi.
"Why are you all attacking him?" Lin Yi asked. He hadn't shown his face for a while, and given that this was a forgotten era, it was no surprise these people couldn't recall who he was.
"A Zombie must be eradicated!" Glasses Man adjusted his glasses and puffed out his frail chest, looking righteous.
"A Zombie? He's clearly a person! How can you think he's a Zombie?" Lin Yi laughed. It was astonishing how terrified this group was to act so thoughtlessly.
"We saw him eating flesh and drinking blood; who else could do such things but a Zombie?" Glasses Man continued, and Lin Yi noticed the scars on his body and the anger etched on his face.
"We eat meat too, but drinking blood doesn't necessarily make someone a Zombie!" Lin Yi found it amusing. Before Zombies existed, there were people with a penchant for drinking blood. Did that mean Zombies had already been around back then?
"Our leader says he's a Zombie, so if you're not with him, then you must be one of us!" At that moment, a chubby teenager pushed forward, looking ready to throw a punch if Lin Yi dared to "talk nonsense" again.
"Although Zombies have caused us great harm, we can't just attack everyone indiscriminately! I assure you, he is not a Zombie!"
Lin Yi felt frustrated; being around these young people who couldn't discern right from wrong made him feel out of place.
"Who are you? Are you an accomplice? Then let's fight together!" The leading Glasses Man suddenly contorted his face into a snarl and swung his fist at Lin Yi.
Of course, Lin Yi wouldn’t let himself get hit; he blurred and vanished in an instant. However, the middle-aged Slovenly Man behind him was in dire straits, facing the brunt of their assault!
"Stop it!" Just as Lin Yi was about to intervene, he noticed a police car parked not far away. Two officers stood by, neither stopping the chaos nor leaving.
"Can’t you see they’re attacking someone?" A surge of anger welled up within Lin Yi as he swiftly moved in front of the two officers.
Lin Yi's actions were undoubtedly reckless, but the two police officers possessed combat abilities that barely reached Star Level, so they were somewhat familiar with such situations and did not appear overly shocked.
"Who are you..."
"Lin Yi!"
The two officers paused for a moment before immediately recognizing Lin Yi's identity, their expressions relaxing.
"That's good. We'll head over right away!" The two officers seemed to receive some sort of command, quickly drawing their guns and shouting into the crowd before sprinting forward at high speed.
"Step back, or we will open fire!" One of the officers shouted as he saw hundreds of people surrounding a middle-aged man.
However, even as some people noticed, they became even more frenzied in their assault. At that moment, a scream suddenly erupted from the crowd!
The expressions of the two officers changed dramatically as they exchanged glances. One of them raised his gun and fired a warning shot into the air!
Bang! Bang! Bang! The three gunshots rang out, and the previously chaotic crowd immediately calmed down. Someone shouted to retreat, and everyone began to scatter in different directions!
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly caught a whiff of blood in the air and thought to himself that something was wrong. He swiftly blurred into motion and appeared where the smell was strongest, only to find that the middle-aged man who had just been alive had a fruit knife plunged into his forehead, his face frozen in an expression of disbelief.
