To the north of Cairo lies the largest delta in the world, a place bustling with residents. Once, the Nile Delta was a coveted paradise, but now it is bordered by the Mediterranean to the north and surrounded by the Nile River, which brings with it the looming threat of Undead Creatures lurking in the waters.
Although Cairo responded quickly by erecting a tall Quarantine Wall along the Eastern African Coast, there was little time to fortify defenses on either side of the Nile. Fortunately, large marine creatures could not easily conceal themselves in the river, alleviating fears of sudden attacks from monstrous sea beasts. However, various aquatic creatures frequently assaulted the residential areas along both banks, forcing those living near the shore to abandon their homes and convert them into military camps.
Lin Yi, though not situated within the delta itself, was close enough to be in a high-risk zone for Nile Crocodile attacks.
The Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps had fortified their base completely; Lin Yi was confident that any Undead Creatures daring to attack would meet their end without return.
As night deepened, aside from the distant sound of water lapping against the riverbank, there was an unsettling silence.
Was this a prelude to a storm? Lin Yi felt an irritable restlessness; he wished for a swift confrontation, but those Undead Creatures might not grant him that opportunity.
Considering everyone was tired, Lin Yi arranged for only a few to keep watch while most had already fallen asleep. Jiao Jiao, responsible for intelligence work, was reluctant to rest at this moment. A few individuals were stationed in front of several computers, monitoring various information displayed on screens in search of useful intelligence.
However, aside from some routine communications, they had intercepted no valuable military information. It wasn’t long before Jiao Jiao noticed a string of garbled code appearing on a previously decoded display! The information shown on the computer had been directly decrypted by Charlie's intelligence software; it should not have contained any unrecognizable gibberish!
Charlie felt a strong sense of frustration as he pounded his fist on the table and exclaimed, “Could it be a new communication code developed in Cairo? Why can’t we decode it at all?”
He shook his head and added, “That’s impossible; this resembles a completely different form of intelligent life’s communication pattern!” This wasn’t just Charlie being overly confident. Although his decryption software couldn’t crack every encrypted message, it certainly shouldn’t produce entirely meaningless gibberish.
“Another form of intelligent life? Are we intercepting messages from aliens sent to Earth?” Jiao Jiao made an ill-timed joke to lighten the oppressive atmosphere.
“In fact, there are already forms of intelligent life on Earth that are vastly different from humans but possess exceptionally high intelligence!” Lin Yi leaned against the doorframe and voiced an idea he was reluctant to share.
“Captain is referring to Zombies?” Charlie quickly reacted but clearly found it hard to believe Lin Yi’s speculation.
It seemed absurd; Zombies whose brains had been eroded by the Zombie Virus into mere black sludge could barely speak—how could they possibly utilize advanced communication methods?
Lin Yi nodded gravely. He had encountered intelligent Zombies before, so their abilities were not surprising.
"Wait here, I'll go take a look!" A thought flashed through Lin Yi's mind, and in an instant, he vanished from sight.
The next moment, Lin Yi appeared outside the military camp. The wind blowing from the riverbank was somewhat fierce, causing Lin Yi to squint his eyes. He then closed them tightly, and an invisible wave of energy became visible in the air. It emanated from Lin Yi's body and quickly gathered together, sweeping toward the Nile River.
With his eyes shut, Lin Yi poured all his Psychic Power into the surroundings. He sensed that the banks of the Nile would not be calm tonight. However, without any useful information at hand, he dared not make any rash judgments.
At this moment, Lin Yi's Psychic Power had reached the peak of Eight Star Level, hinting at a potential breakthrough to Nine Star Level. Yet, an indescribable pressure kept weighing down on his consciousness, preventing him from reaching a new realm no matter how hard he tried.
Suddenly, as Lin Yi's Psychic Power delved deeper into the Nile, he felt several strange waves fleeting through the water!
Realization struck him! These were waves of Psychic Power! Lin Yi knew that some Zombies could transmit information through Psychic Power!
Could it be that the river was already infested with Zombies? Lin Yi slowed down his search; he needed to grasp every cubic millimeter of movement in the river! Unfortunately, just as quickly as it began, he lost track of those waves of power.
Communicating through Psychic Power was fundamentally different from manipulating objects with it. Even with Lin Yi's formidable Psychic Power, he couldn't actively use it to communicate with someone.
“Douglas, Sean, come out and take a look!” Lin Yi called out to the two through his communicator. Although he wanted to find Li Qiweng as well, he couldn’t bear to put his wife through any hardship.
Douglas's Psychic Power had already reached Seven-Star Peak and could break through to Eight Star Level at any moment. Meanwhile, Sean could reach Seven Star Level thanks to the radiation from his War God Suit!
“Boss!”
“Captain!”
It was only a few steps away, and the two of them arrived in an instant. Douglas, familiar with Lin Yi, stood directly beside him, following Lin Yi's gaze.
"There’s something in the water, but it moves quickly. Can you help me look for it?" Lin Yi's Psychic Power was still searching through the water. As long as the creatures in the water remained still, ordinary detection devices would struggle to sense their presence. This was especially true for the Undead Creatures, which were even harder to pinpoint.
"Got it!" The two sensed Lin Yi's serious expression and understood that things were definitely not simple.
At that moment, Lin Yi assigned tasks: he would search the lake surface within a four-kilometer radius, while Douglas and Sean would explore the areas on either side of him, each responsible for three kilometers.
Using Psychic Power for exploration was exhausting work. Since Lin Yi possessed the most powerful Psychic Power, he naturally took on the most challenging task. He focused his mind and began scanning the river surface.
Fortunately, they were close to a delta where the river was only a few dozen meters wide. At this time, under the faint starlight, he could see ripples suddenly spreading across the lake surface, as if dragonflies were skimming the water to lay eggs.
Before long, Lin Yi's perception had reached a depth of five meters underwater; however, there was no sign of activity.
Quickly, the range of his Psychic Power expanded to ten meters, yet he still saw nothing in his perception. Nevertheless, Lin Yi did not give up and continued to delve deeper.
The Zombies would not let the Nile Defense Zone rest easy. Since the Nile Crocodiles had not been completely eradicated for over a year, Lin Yi had every reason to worry about their return!
However, when Lin Yi's Psychic Power reached a depth of fifty meters, he still found nothing—not even a single moving plankton!
This was already beyond reason. If Zombies attempted to use Psychic Power for communication, it would have to pass through the water surface to reach the bottom. Yet Lin Yi had encountered no similar energy fluctuations during his descent.
Unwilling to accept this outcome, despite feeling his Psychic Power beginning to wane, Lin Yi pressed on with his search below.
Five minutes later, he finally swept back and forth across the riverbed. However, apart from murky water and an overwhelming sense of pressure from the riverbed itself, he could sense nothing else.
Even though he was reluctant, Lin Yi had no choice but to retract his Psychic Power. This meticulous exploration turned out to be more exhausting than a direct confrontation with an enemy using Psychic Power.
Taking a deep breath, Lin Yi closed his eyes and began to rest. Twenty minutes later, Douglas and Sean arrived, and if Lin Yi felt merely tired, these two looked as if they were on the verge of collapse. If they hadn’t been holding their breath, they might have fainted at that moment.
"Good work..." Lin Yi understood from their expressions that they had come up empty-handed as well.
"Boss, it's so strange. I kept using Psychic Power to search the riverbed, but I still didn’t find anything—not even a single living creature!" Douglas gasped for air, his face pale, clearly suffering from the excessive consumption of Psychic Power.
"Of course! There are Zombies lurking around here; how could any living creature dare to move about?" Lin Yi's mood soured at the thought of having found nothing after spending most of the night searching.
"Wait! The Zombies are still here! They must be hiding! Didn’t you notice that you didn’t find a single creature, not even plankton?"
Lin Yi's emotions suddenly became agitated as if he had realized something.
Douglas and Sean nodded nervously, and then both quickly reacted! The Zombies were indeed nearby, but they were hiding so well that even several experts in Psychic Power couldn't detect them!
"Captain! I just heard the roar of a Zombie!" Ero's voice echoed in Lin Yi's earpiece. Ero had exceptional hearing and was currently assisting Danny and the others with nighttime surveillance.
"Gurgle gurgle." Just as Ero finished speaking, the river nearby suddenly erupted with violent splashes, as if some prehistoric beast was about to burst forth from the longest river in the world!
"Whoosh—" At that moment, the previously calm river surface suddenly surged with a wave, revealing a massive black shadow in front of everyone’s eyes!
