The temporary camp was nearly empty, with only a few people resting. Wu Hao, Jerry, and Douglas remained inside, engaged in hushed discussions. It seemed that Wu Hao was teaching the other two how to condense their psychic energy. All three were practitioners of Psychic Power, and Wu Hao had learned many training methods related to it during his time in Lion City’s Eight Departments.
Li Qiweng, of course, did not go out either. At that moment, she was practicing her movement techniques in an open area. Lin Yi observed that Li Qiweng could instantly create four illusory figures, a speed that even someone newly entering the Seven Star-Level Combat Power tier would find hard to achieve. Lin Yi knew that Li Qiweng was merely at the peak of Six-Star combat power, yet her speed was astonishing.
“Darling, is something wrong?” Sensing Lin Yi's presence, Li Qiweng's four figures merged into one and appeared right in front of him.
Having just finished intense training, her chest rose and fell rapidly, and beads of sweat glistened on her forehead. Lin Yi used his Consciousness to help wipe her down. He always felt a pang of guilt knowing that the person he loved most was facing such dire circumstances alongside him.
“Nothing much, just came to see you,” Lin Yi initially intended to share his plans with Li Qiweng but decided against it after a moment's thought.
“If you lie to me again, I won’t forgive you!” Li Qiweng wrapped her arms around Lin Yi, resting her head against his chest and pouting.
Lin Yi paused for a moment before responding, “Alright then. Paul and the others are moving out early; I’ll go check on their combat capabilities later.”
“Okay—” Li Qiweng stood on her tiptoes and planted a firm kiss on Lin Yi’s lips. “Let’s go together; don’t leave me behind.”
...
The Iron Wolf Brigade planned their attack for 4:40 AM two days later, as it would be bright by then. Lin Yi and Li Qiweng arrived at Paul’s camp the following evening. Paul was busy with pre-battle weapon training and had assigned one of his guards to handle the reception duties. Of course, Lin Yi didn’t mind these details.
Lin Yi and Li Qiweng requested a quiet room to meditate as they awaited the battle scheduled ten hours later. According to their agreement with Paul, they were primarily there to observe this time unless they were needed. After all, Zombies were not fools; they had their own experts. If Lin Yi joined the fray, it could quickly attract the attention of High-Level Combat Power Zombies. Paul’s team could handle ordinary Zombies well enough, but they would have no chance against High-Level Zombies.
This time, the Iron Wolf Brigade's main enemies were still ordinary Zombies occupying towns near the Addis Ababa Defense Zone. These Zombies were well-hidden under the command of Intelligent Zombies, making it quite challenging to truly defeat them.
As Lin Yi’s power increased, he felt increasingly capable of controlling his emotions. However, if something triggered his negative feelings again, it could be quite terrifying. Although he hadn’t achieved complete emotional tranquility yet, he could stabilize his mood while waiting for the new challenges ahead.
As the sun began to rise with a hint of red in the sky, the Iron Wolf Brigade stationed near the Quarantine Wall gathered together. The morning air was not as scorching as noon; it carried a refreshing coolness mixed with moisture. Lin Yi stretched his body and stood with Li Qiweng at a corner of a high platform where Paul was issuing final attack orders. Below them stood soldiers clad in Mechanical Armor. Unlike others who wore full suits of armor, these soldiers had climbed into simple metal humanoid cabins.
The soldiers entered these metal frames which stood over two meters tall—comparable to Giant Zombies. However, this Mechanical Armor was indeed basic; its appearance resembled merely a metal frame. The heavy metallic feet gave a solid feeling of weightiness. The key component was the jet propulsion system installed in the feet to assist soldiers in flying. Each soldier had laser cannons mounted on their shoulders and a blade sheathed diagonally across their backs. Their arsenal didn’t stop there; they also carried an array of ammunition hanging from their shoulders and held heavy-caliber machine guns in their hands. Additionally, there was a grenade launcher attached to their left arms and several grenades strapped around their waists.
Such individual weaponry was powerful; moreover, each Mechanical Armor was equipped with over ten ultra-sensitive sensors that greatly aided soldiers in combat guidance and improved their reaction speeds. However, despite its formidable weapon systems, this bulky Mechanical Armor sacrificed mobility for power. While it could kill a Zombie at Six-Star Combat Power level easily enough, its slow reaction speed made it easy for any Zombie above Two-Star Combat Power to evade attacks!
"Iron Wolf Brigade!" Paul raised his arm high, his fist clenched tightly.
"Fight to the last!" With the mechanical arms bound to their bodies, the soldiers lifted their Heavy Machine Guns high into the air.
"Let's go!" Paul shouted as he turned and donned his Mechanical Armor. The soldiers below the platform followed his command, their jetpacks igniting beneath them, propelling them directly over the towering Quarantine Wall.
Lin Yi pulled Li Qiweng with him and swiftly reached the top of the platform. Paul stood with his back to them, slightly trembling before he casually stepped into his Mechanical Armor, securing himself tightly within it. His figure instantly towered, resembling a humanoid war machine.
"Your equipment is undoubtedly far superior to ours; you should be able to manage short-distance flight," Paul said with a hint of envy in his tone. Their Addis Ababa Defense Zone had only received two hundred sets of War God Suits due to being in a disaster area, but this was their last and strongest force, so they wouldn't easily deploy it.
"No problem, we can handle short distances," Lin Yi replied with a smile. It felt strange to be involved in such unfairness happening to others.
Without hesitation, Paul pressed a button on his arm and soared into the air. Lin Yi and Li Qiweng opened the Metal Box they had been carrying and stepped onto it. The War God Suit quickly enveloped their bodies like a flowing stream, and their momentum surged dramatically.
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly noticed a flicker from the Intelligent System, as if it had encountered something unusual, but then it fell silent as if nothing had happened.
"What's wrong?" Lin Yi asked.
"Apologies, sir. There seems to be a system malfunction. I detected an energy surge just now, but it disappeared as quickly as it came, as if it never existed," the Intelligent System responded in a voice tinged with human-like regret.
Lin Yi furrowed his brow and channeled his Psychic Power through the War God Suit's amplification capabilities but found nothing amiss.
"Let's go, dear," Li Qiweng said lightly as she appeared in front of Lin Yi with a bright smile that made him feel refreshed.
The War God Suit only supported short-distance flight; fortunately, the operational area for the Iron Wolf Brigade was not far away. It lay southwest of the Addis Ababa Defense Zone, about five kilometers away. This area was already infested with Zombies, with hordes scattered everywhere.
Five kilometers was merely a blink of an eye for the War God Suit. Given how close they were to such large numbers of Zombies, one could imagine the immense pressure of battle that awaited them.
The speed of the Mechanical Armor was impressive, and Lin Yi and his team had just landed alongside them. This time, Paul led three thousand soldiers from the Iron Wolf Brigade to test the Mechanical Armor. As the soldiers descended in formation, a cloud of dust rose several meters into the air.
Before the Iron Wolf Brigade lay a town that was in ruins, with streets littered with deep bullet holes and blackened remnants of walls scorched by fire.
The sun finally revealed itself fully, and the sunlight began to grow intense. The rays illuminated the debris that had been reduced to rubble by artillery fire, casting mottled shadows across the ground. To their surprise, there was not a single Zombie in sight.
"Iron Wolf Brigade, the Vanguard Squad will move out immediately!" With a wave of Paul's hand, a long gap opened among the three thousand soldiers, and fifty spirited soldiers lined up on each side of the gap.
In the next moment, all the soldiers moved in perfect unison as if they were programmed to do so!
"Kill! Kill! Kill!" The hundred humanoid combat machines shouted in unison and charged toward the pockmarked street with an incredible sense of coordination.
"Second and Third Teams! Flank left and right, but remember not to rush in!" Paul issued another command promptly.
Soon, two teams of five hundred each broke from formation and rushed toward the flanks of the ruined town, kicking up clouds of dust behind them.
"After five minutes, the remaining troops will charge in with me!" Paul glanced at his watch before instructing several accompanying soldiers to deploy dozens of miniature drones for aerial surveillance.
"Although there aren't enough Zombies around for support, we must remain cautious." Paul was well aware of the distribution of Zombies in this experimental area for the Mechanical Armor. While there were tens of thousands of Zombies residing in these towns, they spread out over a large area to avoid being overwhelmed by human vitality, making it unlikely for them to gather in large numbers quickly. This was precisely why Paul chose this location as the testing ground for the Iron Wolf Brigade!
