The recent ambush by the Zombies had completely failed, resulting in the loss of a number of High-Level Combat Power Zombies. In the short term, it would be difficult for the Zombies in the European Theater to launch a larger-scale attack. After all, Nine-Star Combat Power Zombies were not something that could be easily replaced, and losing three at once was a heavy blow.
After receiving support from Cook, Lin Yi found himself unable to leave immediately. Besides forging his personal weapon, he needed time to prepare various individual weapons. Moreover, having just cleared such a large area of Zombie-occupied territory, thorough inspections of the reclaimed zones were necessary. This month-long operation could only be considered the end of the first phase; the importance of the upcoming inspection was as crucial as driving the Zombies away.
Countless incidents had made it clear that the intelligence of Zombies was on par with that of any human. Although they had been caught off guard this time, a month was enough for them to devise a counterattack strategy. Thus, this operation was directly led by five individuals with Nine-Star Combat Power. Typically, they would remain behind the scenes and only reveal themselves in special circumstances.
Lin Yi's Mercenary Squad had just recruited another thousand members, which would take time to integrate. Fortunately, he did not need to worry too much about potential traitors; with Wu Hao and Jerry around, anyone who wasn't exceptionally strong could be easily assessed for loyalty.
Of course, checking all one thousand Mercenaries wouldn't be feasible in a short period. Lin Yi planned to use a gradual conversational approach similar to how new recruits were integrated to gauge their true intentions. To avoid raising suspicion among these individuals and causing unrest, Lin Yi immediately joined the inspection efforts after receiving all the weapons from the Mercenary Alliance.
The inspection process was different from an attack; every area needed to be checked for residual Zombie Virus and potential traps using instruments, even if no Zombies were present. The monotony of this task was immense; despite Lin Yi's self-proclaimed patience, he grew increasingly restless after three months.
By this time, the first round of inspections for the new defense zone had been completed. The remaining work was primarily handled by second-tier militia members, significantly reducing the number of elite combat personnel available since large areas still remained under Zombie control.
After three months of inspections, Lin Yi finally finished talking with all the new personnel. Wu Hao and Jerry occasionally accompanied him or observed from behind the scenes. However, Lin Yi did not expect that this disbanded Mercenary group still possessed considerable strength. Despite losing one Eight-Star Level and two Seven-Star Level Mercenaries, they still had one Seven-Star Level Mercenary and five Six-Star Level ones! Those above Six-Star Level Combat Power were beyond Jerry's influence, while Wu Hao had expertise in this area but lacked absolute certainty in determining their loyalty.
Faced with this situation, Lin Yi felt torn between relief and concern; these six Mercenaries would become part of his team and represented some of the strongest combat power aside from himself and Li Qiweng. However, if one among them turned out to be a traitor, it could pose a lethal threat to the entire Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps. Initially, Lin Yi considered using force to control these individuals since his Psychic Power had reached Eight-Star Level—these people would not stand a chance against him. However, doing so would alienate them even if they weren't traitors.
After hesitating for a moment, Lin Yi decided against using force. The best way to test their loyalty now was to go out and attack Zombies. He also received a mission from the Mercenary Alliance; this task was particularly challenging as they were to seize Port City occupied by Zombies!
Port City was naturally located near the ocean, where the greatest threat came from massive Oceanic Undead. Although Lin Yi's entire team had grown significantly stronger, he still felt apprehensive about facing those unknown sea monsters. However, with the support of the entire alliance and Allied Forces ready at any moment, it didn't seem as daunting.
After getting everything ready, Lin Yi set off with his Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, which now boasted over two thousand members. The armored vehicles they purchased earlier in Greater Moscow Defense Zone came into play as they boarded them and headed straight for the front lines.
The team led by Lin Yi was tasked with addressing a situation in a town near the English Channel. This town faced Great Britain Island across the sea and was the closest point to it due to its protrusion from the European Continent. Given that this area had become an inland sea between two major Defense Zones, security measures were of utmost importance. The Royal Navy had thoroughly patrolled the waters and established a tight defense network, ready to concentrate their forces at the first sign of any Corpse Sea Beasts.
Lin Yi's Mercenary Squad was primarily focused on eliminating the remaining Zombies. Although there were risks involved, it was significantly better than before.
However, just as Lin Yi and his team arrived in the town, they encountered something strange. In this town, which had been overrun by Zombies for over a year, they spotted three Easterners: two women and one man.
While Lin Yi had faced unusual situations before, encountering people in such a Zombie-infested area was a first for him. It was important to note that prior to the Allied Forces' operations, this place had been a Base Camp for Zombies!
The three individuals seemed to have noticed Lin Yi's group long before they arrived, and surprisingly, they showed no fear upon seeing them. The girl in the middle, likely around sixteen or seventeen years old and quite beautiful, appeared to be the leader of the trio. With a playful glint in her eyes, she approached Lin Yi with a bright smile.
"Koala Uncle, we finally meet," she said, her cherry lips parting as her voice carried an unexpected maturity, reminiscent of someone in their thirties.
Lin Yi was taken aback; he couldn't recall ever meeting this girl. Beside him, Li Qiweng looked at him with suspicion, clearly ready to unleash a beating if things went awry.
"May I ask who you are?" Lin Yi felt as if Li Qiweng's gaze could burn him alive and quickly turned to the girl.
"Hehe, it seems Koala Uncle really has forgotten me," she said, covering her mouth with her hand while her watery eyes brimmed with sorrow.
Lin Yi glanced at Li Qiweng, who was on the verge of exploding with anger. He scratched his head and desperately tried to remember where he had seen this girl before. Unfortunately, all he could think of were memories of peeking at his neighbor's sister changing clothes—none of which helped him identify her!
"Miss, first of all, my name is Lin Yi, from Lion City—not Australia’s Koala. Secondly, I’m not that old to be called uncle. Lastly, could you please tell me who you are?" Lin Yi felt overwhelmed; he had no idea what this mysterious girl wanted.
"Woo woo woo! Koala Uncle is so heartless! I’ve always been there for you during your dullest moments, and you’ve forgotten me in just a year? That really hurts my feelings!" Suddenly, she squatted down on the ground, covering her face with her hands as if she were crying pitifully—a sight that tugged at one's heartstrings.
“Lin Yi, if you don’t understand today, I’ll throw you into the sea to feed the sharks!” After finally being on the verge of forgiving Lin Yi, Li Qiweng was now furious. She glared at him without caring about his feelings.
Lin Yi found himself in a difficult position, but fortunately, Wu Hao appeared and whispered in his ear, “This girl is not simple. I just tried to read her thoughts and found nothing. You need to be careful.”
Wu Hao knew that Lin Yi genuinely did not recognize this girl, but her sudden appearance was too strange. He had just tested the waters and was surprised to find nothing. What shocked Wu Hao even more were the two people beside the girl. Although they didn’t possess the same mind-reading ability as her, their mental fluctuations were exceptionally strong, comparable to Lin Yi’s.
After hearing Wu Hao’s words, Lin Yi steadied himself and began to reassess the situation. It was true that those involved often become confused; he had just been caught off guard by this sudden turn of events. At that moment, he realized that the two bodyguards next to the girl were extraordinarily powerful, likely reaching Eight-Star Combat Power. Who exactly was this girl to have two Eight-Star Combat Power individuals willing to be her bodyguards?
“You must not be an ordinary person either, so please don’t deliberately make things difficult for me here. If there’s something you want, just say it directly. Even if it costs me my life, if you have the ability, feel free to take it!” Lin Yi declared, his aura suddenly shifting, giving off an intimidating presence.
However, just as Lin Yi released his aura, the two bodyguards who had been standing like wax figures suddenly moved and appeared right in front of him, their expressions serious and ready for action.
Lin Yi was no pushover either; his Mercenary team members immediately aimed their weapons at the two.
“Alright, alright, this isn’t fun at all. Koala Uncle is still as dull as ever. I’m Winnie Flower, the one from Australia,” the girl who had been crying suddenly stood up, revealing a few tear streaks on her face.
Winnie Flower? Something flashed through Lin Yi’s mind before he finally remembered—she was the one he had chatted with a few times, the computer whiz!
“It seems Koala Uncle finally remembers. My real name is Wang Zijun; you can call me Qi. Of course, if I’m in a good mood, you can also call me Flower,” the girl who called herself Wang Zijun grinned playfully, looking adorable.
