As mercenaries, Lin Yi and his team were naturally not qualified to participate in the grand military parade. What they didn't know was that Moscow had mobilized all available production machinery for this event, resulting in the most frenzied production effort. The entire Armed Forces underwent a twenty-four-hour parade process, with the Kremlin exerting its most powerful mobilization.
"We've already informed Moscow about your situation. I need to attend a meeting shortly. After that, someone from the Mercenary Alliance will come to discuss matters with you, and there should be new missions for you," Aibolon said after spotting a convoy of business hover vehicles approaching. He exchanged a few final words with Lin Yi before leaving with his entourage. Charlie had initially tried to stay behind, but Aibolon merely glanced at him, prompting him to obediently follow.
This was Lin Yi's first visit to Moscow. As for Beatrice, her previous trips had only involved executing covert missions, so this was her first time standing openly at the Military Airport of this Fighting Nation's capital.
The night remained dark as Lin Yi and his team watched Aibolon's convoy disappear without seeing anyone from the Mercenary Alliance arrive. Fortunately, the nearby Armed Forces guards did not target them; they merely cast curious glances their way.
About a minute later, just as Lin Yi and his team were beginning to grow impatient, an ordinary wheeled vehicle approached. A balding middle-aged man stepped out, his rotund figure hardly resembling that of a Mercenary Alliance member.
"Apologies, gentlemen," he said with a somewhat obsequious smile, his eyes squinting into slits. "I just received word from headquarters and rushed over."
Lin Yi felt a bit uncomfortable with the man's demeanor but quickly bowed slightly and replied, "I am Lin Yi; I appreciate your assistance."
"Oh, my apologies for not introducing myself earlier. I am the SIS Director stationed at the Mercenary Alliance's Moscow office," the man introduced himself as Sith, patting his shiny forehead before turning to Beatrice. "And you must be the renowned Beatrice, Captain of the Third Division of the First Mercenary Corps!"
Beatrice merely nodded, clearly unimpressed by someone who served in support roles rather than frontline combat. However, Sith did not seem to mind; he continued to smile and bow slightly.
"Gentlemen, the Alliance has issued an order that needs to be received at our base," the SIS Director stated. He knew he could not command two First-Class Stewards; he was just an ordinary staff member of the Mercenary Alliance.
"We can't possibly crowd into your vehicle with nearly a thousand people," Lin Yi remarked as he surveyed their tightly packed group.
"This airport doesn't allow convoys inside, so I ask for your understanding and request that you follow me outside," Sith replied with an awkward smile. Moscow had always been wary of other armed forces entering its territory; acknowledging Sith's identity was already a challenge in itself, and they certainly wouldn't allow an external armed member to lead a convoy into their Military Airport. If it weren't for the outbreak of the Zombie Crisis, the Kremlin might have found an excuse to eliminate this office entirely!
"Not a problem!" Lin Yi thought little of it, but Beatrice let out a cold snort that startled Sith. Fortunately, Beatrice made no further moves and led her Mercenary team members directly out of the airport. Lin Yi, not hesitating any longer, followed suit and headed outside with everyone. Hai had just woken up after a brief treatment at the Thermosphere Fortress, but still felt somewhat weak, so Renesmee took him along in Sith's vehicle.
Sith had prepared a convoy of thirty vehicles outside the airport, each capable of carrying thirty people, ensuring everyone had a seat. However, as they made their way out, Lin Yi noticed many eyes were fixed on them. Even their guns were pointed in their direction. Lin Yi believed that if they made even the slightest move, those guns would unleash deadly fire. As the convoy departed, three Armed Helicopters took to the sky alongside them. According to Sith, they were there to protect the convoy's safety, but everyone knew what was really going on.
The convoy sped along a dedicated airport highway without any signs of stopping until they reached the city center. Lin Yi didn’t bother to ask; in this situation, most places were deserted, and their journey went smoothly. Sith remained mostly silent throughout the ride, his expression tense.
After about two hours, they finally arrived at what was referred to as the office just before three in the morning. It was an abandoned factory in a desolate area, surrounded by piles of rusted machinery and overgrown weeds, with only a few faint paths leading to the factory's entrance.
"This is our base?" Beatrice exclaimed. The base in the Milan Defense Zone had been built to military standards; who would have thought they would encounter such conditions in Moscow?
Sith's expression changed completely; gone was his previous obsequious demeanor. He said earnestly, "Everyone, we are Mercenaries. In times of peace, we are often targets of suppression by various nations. Although they sometimes rely on us, most of the time they do not wish for us to become truly powerful! Moscow has always despised having other forces wielding strong Armed Forces on its territory, so our operations here have not been easy. But I have been here for over ten years; I am not as incompetent as they imagine!" With that, Sith strode forward towards one of the factory's workshop doors.
Lin Yi couldn't help but feel a sense of schadenfreude as he glanced at Beatrice; he was completely taken aback by Sith's righteous demeanor. He didn’t even think to argue and unconsciously followed Sith inside.
Inside the vast workshop stood production lines that had long since ceased operation; there were no workers or automated machines in sight. Dust covered the once-mighty industrial equipment, replaced by a heavy sense of decay that time had bestowed upon it.
"This used to be a military-industrial enterprise," Sith explained as they walked through the empty factory. "But it closed down about fifty years ago. For various reasons, no one has come to take it over since then; it has simply rotted away. I bought this factory through several intermediaries about eight years ago and gradually established our influence here!" The Mercenary Alliance had operations worldwide, but tasks requiring many hands could only be executed by local Mercenary Squads. However, no country would allow armed personnel to enter freely; thus having a local base was most convenient for Mercenaries.
As Sith continued his explanation while walking through the empty factory, it seemed that apart from them, there were no other members around. But given that Sith had been here for eight years, he surely wasn’t just relying on appearances. After winding through several workshops—so many that Lin Yi felt slightly disoriented—Sith finally came to a stop.
At that moment, Lin Yi noticed Sith’s gaze fixed on an inconspicuous spot on an old machine that appeared to be an outdated electrical box. Sith quickly approached and gently opened it. Inside was a modern touch-screen control panel; without hesitation, he tapped several times on it.
With a creaking sound, metal clashed together as old machinery groaned and whined in response—a noise that made one's teeth ache with an odd discomfort.
Lin Yi finally saw it clearly; not far ahead of them, a dark glow suddenly appeared on the once solid ground. This dark light became increasingly pronounced, and moments later, a massive opening emerged before their eyes. A bottomless staircase led directly down to a place they had never seen before.
Sith was the first to step onto the staircase, disappearing around a bend after just a few steps. Lin Yi and Beatrice exchanged glances, both reflecting confusion in each other's eyes. Clearly, even the seasoned mercenary Sith was unaware of this secret base, leaving Lin Yi even more in the dark.
The corridor was not very long but was intentionally designed to spiral downward, creating a disorienting effect. When Lin Yi and the others reached the bottom, they were stunned by the immense sight before them. This was no mere factory; it was an enormous underground arms factory. The entire subterranean space was roughly the size of a football field, densely packed with military weapons. There were even thousands of advanced laser weapons here, and more terrifyingly, dozens of military armored vehicles were parked in this place!
"Many of the allied republics in Moscow are quite chaotic, and those areas are our mercenary territory. Over the years, many mercenaries have honed their skills in those tumultuous places. We transport these weapons through secret channels to various conflict zones, earning ourselves quite a profit," Sith said, his eyes gleaming as if reflecting light. His hand caressed the cold metal shell of an armored vehicle as if he were tenderly touching the body of a beautiful woman, filled with both gentleness and affection.
"Your mission is simple: arm yourselves with these weapons and unite to take down a city occupied by zombies. We mercenaries need to assert our strength on this world stage, and this is clearly the best opportunity!" Sith turned to Lin Yi and the others, his gaze filled with madness.
