Seventy or eighty ordinary Zombies were nothing more than slicing through cucumbers for Lin Yi. Just as he stepped into the hall, two Silver Souls shot out like cats spotting a mouse.
"Thud! Thud!"
The panicked crowd had yet to comprehend what was happening when the Zombies that had been roaring at them suddenly fell silent. In the next moment, a horrifying scene unfolded: the heads of those once aggressive Zombies were sent flying almost instantaneously. Fresh blood gushed from the necks of the recently Corpseified Zombies, spraying into the air like a fountain as their heads soared upward.
"Well done!" A cheer erupted from the crowd that had just been cornered.
Lin Yi squinted; the lighting wasn't great, but he quickly recognized one man with blue eyes waving his arms dramatically—it was Charlie, who claimed to be a member of the royal family!
"Whoosh!" Lin Yi's figure moved in an instant, causing those who had been frightened by the Zombies to retreat even further in shock at his ghostly speed.
"What are you doing here?" Lin Yi recalled that the last layer was supposed to be guarded by Mercenaries, but upon glancing around, he found only ordinary people.
Charlie squeezed through the crowd, looking somewhat embarrassed. "The Undead Birds on this level had already been wiped out. A big guy told us to come down, but just a few minutes later, some people suddenly turned into Zombies and started biting everyone. We were caught off guard, and many got infected with Corpse Poison. Then you showed up..." Charlie took a few timid steps back, as Lin Yi's fierce expression certainly didn't make him look like a good person.
After hearing Charlie's words, Lin Yi directed his Psychic Power upward toward the stone chamber above. However, to his perception, there were no living beings left!
"Stay here; I'll go take a look!" Lin Yi raised an eyebrow, knowing that those flying Undead Birds were a nightmare for ordinary people!
In the next moment, Lin Yi flickered and vanished from the hall. When he reappeared, he was already in the thirty-ninth stone chamber, but there wasn't a single living person inside—only hundreds of mindless Zombies wandering aimlessly in various rooms.
"Roar!" Sensing Lin Yi's surging vitality, the previously numb Zombies suddenly became excited. Hundreds of freshly Corpseified Zombies raised their blood-soaked claws and charged wildly toward Lin Yi.
Lin Yi sighed, feeling a mix of emotions; these had once been his kind but had instantly turned into mindless corpses. Yet now he faced enemies—showing mercy to enemies was cruelty to oneself.
“Silver Soul” shimmered with a spiritual light, its cold gleam flashing repeatedly. The Zombies that had attempted to approach were instantly decapitated by Lin Yi. However, these ordinary Zombies, who had just undergone Corpseification, were oblivious to fear. Driven by instinct, they continued to charge recklessly toward Lin Yi.
“Slash!” A sense of frustration weighed heavily on Lin Yi, and he instinctively gripped the hilt of his blade and shouted!
Two faint flashes of blade light swept through the hall, resulting in a gruesome scene as blood and flesh sprayed everywhere. Just moments ago, Lin Yi had forcefully unleashed his Blade Qi, and with a single slash, he had eliminated over half of the Zombies. Without hesitation, he swiftly reversed his grip and struck again!
“Thud—” The remaining Zombies were cleaved in two by the Blade Qi. Although most were still alive, the sight of them split in half rendered them nearly powerless. Still, Lin Yi was not reassured; he casually unleashed several more waves of Blade Qi. He needed to resolve this quickly, sensing that the battle above was still fierce.
“Bang bang!” After a few more slashes from Lin Yi, all the Zombies had been reduced to mere piles of corpses. The uninfected blood soaked every corner of the hall, filling the air with a metallic stench. However, Lin Yi noticed that his previous strikes had been excessively powerful; deep, bottomless gashes marred the floor.
Lin Yi couldn’t help but click his tongue. If it weren’t for the substantial thickness between each layer of stone chamber, his strikes might have collapsed the entire building!
“Whew—” Just as Lin Yi prepared to ascend further, Nicolas arrived with Charlie in tow.
“What are you doing here?” Lin Yi frowned. While Nicolas still had some self-defense capabilities, Charlie was another matter entirely. Despite his ability to phase through objects, he would be helpless against a large horde of Zombies.
“Aren’t we supposed to be rescued soon? They should be arriving shortly; we need to get to the rooftop!” Charlie exclaimed with joy, whether from just being saved or from the prospect of imminent rescue.
“Someone is coming to save us?” Lin Yi looked at Charlie incredulously. He believed that the First Mercenary Corps was already formidable enough; in this era of declining royal power, how much could royal members truly do to rescue thousands?
“Hey, don’t doubt it…”
“Boss, Sea Maiden has passed out!” Before Charlie could finish his sentence, an urgent voice crackled through Lin Yi’s earpiece—it was Witerson II.
“What floor are you on?” Knowing that the Sea God Technique was still immature and could pose significant risks if overused, concern creased Lin Yi’s brow.
"Eighteenth Floor! Many of our brothers have already turned into corpses!" Witerson II's voice carried a hint of sorrow as he watched his companions transform into Zombies, a sight that was truly hard to accept.
Lin Yi's heart suddenly raced, the feeling of palpitations was unbearable. He couldn't care less about how credible Charlie's words were; he grabbed Nicolas and dashed toward the window, leaping directly to the Eighteenth Floor, which was certainly much faster than climbing up floor by floor.
Nicolas quickly understood Lin Yi's intentions and led him at full speed to the stone chamber on the eighteenth floor. The harsh wind howled past their ears, but Lin Yi was oblivious to it; he was only afraid for the safety of his people.
A few seconds later, Lin Yi landed on the balcony of a stone chamber. In the next moment, he charged straight into the hall, where a series of furious roars erupted!
Lin Yi's eyes swiftly scanned the hall and discovered that there were still dozens of Undead Birds on the eighteenth floor! They circled above, ready to strike at any moment. On the ground, many people had undergone Corpseification, most of them dressed as Mercenaries. However, what concerned Lin Yi the most were the familiar faces retreating into a damaged stone house; thanks to the Sea God Technique, they had not fallen victim to the Undead Birds!
At this moment, most of them were left with only one or two short knives in hand. This was because Lin Yi had a habit of using dual blades and had mandated that everyone carry one; otherwise, they might not even have weapons to defend themselves!
"Caw caw caw—" A piercing cry rang out as dozens of Undead Birds surged toward the stone chamber where Witerson II and the others were hiding! Although they lacked intelligence, after several charges, they realized that the real threat was the woman emitting a milky white light. Thus, they instinctively avoided her attack range!
Lin Yi's expression hardened; these Undead Birds were the hardest to deal with—not only could they fly, but they were also incredibly fast! Without regard for the dull pain forming in his head, Lin Yi unleashed all his Psychic Power into invisible chains that pressed down on those Undead Birds attempting to charge forward.
"Whoosh!" Lin Yi blurred and appeared right in front of the Undead Birds. Ignoring the ordinary Zombies trying to rush him, he swung his Silver Soul and released a powerful Blade Qi!
"Thud!"
"Thud thud!"
After three strikes, dozens of Undead Birds fell to the ground as nothing more than a pile of minced flesh. Meanwhile, those Zombies that had rushed forward barely covered three meters!
"Cover our leader from these Zombies!" The people hiding inside finally reacted. Seeing Lin Yi standing there like a war god wiped away their previous frustration, and they charged out from the stone house.
The ordinary Zombies had weak combat abilities, and Lin Yi didn't pay much attention to them. He simply sat down to rest. After a series of battles, even he felt exhausted.
A minute later, Witerson II and the others finally finished off the scattered Zombies, but each of them was splattered with blood that dripped down their slick Combat Suits onto the ground.
"What's the situation now?" Lin Yi asked as he rubbed his temples. Just relaxing a bit made it hard for him to concentrate; it seemed he was indeed too tired lately.
"Most of the citizens who fled with us have likely already undergone Corpseification and were eliminated by us. As for Jian, he is dealing with the remaining people and the Golden Mercenary Corps against those who have turned into Corpseified beings and the Undead Birds. They should be on the fifteenth floor by now. We originally planned to support those below, but unexpectedly encountered a large number of Undead Birds that surrounded us! If it weren't for the Sea Maiden, we might have been overwhelmed by these Undead Birds!" Pachy stepped forward at this moment, his face showing signs of fatigue. As one of the few members of Lin Yi's team with Two-Star Combat Power, he naturally had a significant responsibility.
"We'll head up and regroup with Jian! If it comes to it, we'll just take out those Zombies!" Lin Yi gritted his teeth and prepared for the worst.
"Together in life and death!" Someone shouted first, and others joined in. This was the motto established at the beginning of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, and it resonated well with their current predicament.
With Lin Yi leading the way, their speed in charging forward was naturally not slow. Moreover, Jian was decisive in battle; there were hardly any Zombies left on the upper floors, only countless corpses of Undead Birds and decapitated Zombies scattered across the ground!
Minutes later, they successfully reached the top floor. However, as soon as they arrived, they felt as if a giant mountain was pressing down on them. Lin Yi raised his head in consciousness and was taken aback; above him floated a massive flying object that seemed devoid of life, hovering there motionless.
"What is that thing?" someone exclaimed in surprise.
"That is one of only five Super Stratofortresses ever built globally—the most powerful aerial Transmitter in the world with the largest payload capacity!"
