The main defensive force of the Milan Defense Zone was concentrated in the South Side, which faced the Apennine Peninsula, nearly overrun by Zombies. Thus, the Southern Defense Zone bore most of the responsibilities for the entire Milan Defense Zone, and this time, the Zombie attack began directly from the South Side, designed to breach it.
Most people believed that Zombies were merely mindless corpses, but this assault on the Milan Defense Zone revealed that Zombies could also employ strategies. They first launched a massive frontal attack using Zombie Beasts, then quietly sent elite troops to infiltrate the inner city, ultimately spreading the Zombie Virus on a large scale and thoroughly undermining humanity's resolve to resist.
When Lin Yi and his team arrived in the city, chaos had already erupted around them. All the residents were crowded in the streets, bewildered and at a loss. News of defeat had spread ahead, and fleeing soldiers surged back like a flood breaking through a dam. Those unaware of the truth had no idea where to retreat and could only follow the tide of people.
Screams mingled with the sounds of vehicles; most civilians without cars attempted to escape alongside the retreating convoy. However, this created a vicious cycle that rendered almost all vehicles immobile. In their desperation to survive, people had gone mad. Lin Yi even witnessed a car run over a man who tried to block its path, blood splattering across the street before being quickly swallowed by the crowd.
As mercenaries, Lin Yi and his team exuded an aura of intimidation; ordinary civilians hesitated to confront them upon seeing their blood-stained figures. The wide street at the South Gate was filled with vehicles; Lin Yi's group managed to progress relatively smoothly while ordinary vehicles suffered greatly.
Of course, there were those who foolishly attempted to stop Lin Yi's convoy. Before he could speak up, someone fired a shot that killed one of the interceptors instantly!
"Who fired?" Lin Yi growled. Although he had killed before, he had never harmed an innocent person.
"What’s wrong? Captain Lin still wants to show mercy? If we stop, this crowd will drown us in an instant!" Beatrice scoffed, slowly coming to understand Lin Yi's indecisiveness.
Before Lin Yi could respond further, a dull thud echoed nearby. His keen eyes caught sight of a boy throwing a stone that struck their command vehicle.
In the next moment, several people surged from the crowd to block Lin Yi's command vehicle. It was as if a Multi-Bone Domino effect was occurring; more and more people gathered in front of their vehicle, obstructing their escape route!
"Everyone hurry and flee! The Zombies are already closing in behind us!" Lin Yi couldn't bear to run over them directly; he rushed out ahead of Beatrice.
Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through. As Lin Yi reached out instinctively, his hand became sticky. He looked down to find it covered in pulp from a crushed tomato!
"Smash!" Before he could comprehend what was happening, another barrage of fruit and stones rained down on them.
"All you can do is run when things get tough!"
"You've been living off us for nothing!"
"A bunch of cowards!"
"How dare you leave us behind and run away on your own!"
"Go to hell!"
In the next moment, the shouts of anger and despair surged forth like the croaking of frogs in a field. Although Lin Yi reacted quickly, he was caught off guard and was struck hard by a stone.
"Lin Steward! We are Mercenaries, not government Armed Forces. These commoners know nothing but to curse at us. We need to charge forward!" Beatrice shouted, directing the vehicle to move ahead.
At that moment, Lin Yi was stunned from the blow, but upon hearing Beatrice's command, he felt a jolt of alarm yet still did not agree.
"Jerry, use your abilities to control the crowd and make them disperse! Beatrice, let's use Psychic Power together to clear the way!" Lin Yi knew that if he harmed innocent people, it would only lead to trouble in the future.
Seeing Lin Yi's insistence, Beatrice chose not to argue further. Since Rome's return, Jerry had been practicing his abilities diligently, and now controlling ordinary people was as easy as pie for him.
In an instant, Lin Yi felt a strange wave of power. A thick, ethereal force split into two streams and directly enveloped those blocking their path. Before long, Lin Yi saw those who had just been furious suddenly quiet down. As Jerry murmured incantations, the crowd obediently retreated to either side.
"Now's our chance! Drive!" Lin Yi shouted. Pachy turned the headlights to maximum brightness, and the command vehicle roared forward.
However, soon more people gathered ahead. Unlike those in the city, these individuals were fleeing alongside Lin Yi's convoy. Being farther from the South Gate had given them ample time to escape.
Lin Yi and Beatrice were responsible for clearing a path to speed up the convoy. According to Lin Yi's analysis, although the Zombies had currently breached only the South Gate and the command center, they could not be limited to attacking just those two locations. The defenses in other areas were weak, but that did not mean the Zombies would refrain from spreading the Zombie Virus elsewhere.
At this moment, Lin Yi's convoy was heading northwest, and as they left Milan City and entered the suburbs, the road conditions improved significantly. The Zombie ambushes had come too quickly; not everyone received the news in time. However, many vehicles closely followed Lin Yi's convoy, and many of those drivers recognized them as Mercenaries. In this chaotic world, only those with great strength could attract followers.
Soon, under Nicolas's guidance, they finally spotted a relatively high hillside. According to Nicolas, ahead lay his residence, which was right next to a cliff—Zombies would be unable to pursue any further.
Without hesitation, Lin Yi directed the convoy to speed toward that direction. However, they were veering away from the main road onto a winding mountain road. Those eager to escape felt safe following Lin Yi's convoy but noticed they were not heading toward the exit of the Milan Defense Zone but rather toward a desolate mountain. Many people, seeing this situation, chose to ignore Lin Yi and continued driving toward the exit of the Western Defense Zone.
Of course, not everyone made that choice; at least a thousand people followed along. Although Lin Yi did not wish to harm anyone, he still worriedly asked Nicolas, "With so many people going there, can you really hide them all?"
Lin Yi could not imagine what kind of place Nicolas lived in as a vampire that could accommodate thousands of people.
Nicolas's eyes sparkled with excitement as he replied, "It's just me and a few friends there; the entire mountain is our territory. We bored ourselves in the past by digging many caves into the mountain. Each cave can hold at least fifty people, and we have hundreds!"
Lin Yi felt somewhat reassured as the convoy continued to ascend orderly toward the mountaintop. About ten minutes later, they reached the summit. It wasn't very large and could only accommodate a little over ten vehicles; most cars had to park along the winding road.
"Nicolas, where are your caves?" Lin Yi got out of the car and looked around. He noticed that just beyond the summit was a cliff, but across from it stood an isolated peak that was only about ten meters higher than where they stood.
Nicolas ignored Lin Yi and exclaimed with shining eyes, "My friends are back!"
Lin Yi paused for a moment before realizing he was referring to Nicolas's vampire friends. To clarify Lin Yi's confusion, Nicolas's pointed nose twitched slightly as he said, "I can smell them!"
At that moment, Lin Yi noticed that Nicolas was looking at the isolated peak not far away; they were standing about twenty meters from it.
Nicolas's eyes sparkled with excitement. Lin Yi understood that encountering those few vampire friends at this time must have made Nicolas very happy.
Suddenly, several dark figures appeared on the distant peak. A few seconds later, those figures landed simultaneously on the edge of the summit. Lin Yi reacted quickly and clearly saw those individuals folding their wings back as they touched down.
No, these people are naturally friends of Nicolas. Beatrice, being someone with equally powerful Psychic Power, instantly sensed the situation, but his expression quickly returned to normal.
Due to the darkness, although the lights in the car were bright, the speed of these vampires was too fast for anyone else to notice anything unusual.
"Nicolas, what are you doing?" A cold female voice rang out as soon as the group landed on the ground, filled with questioning.
"Ice Sister, they are good people. The Zombies have breached the Milan Defense Zone, and we have no way out!" Nicolas gestured for Lin Yi to come over with him.
As Lin Yi walked a few steps forward, he suddenly felt a chill in the hot summer night sky, as if it were coming from the far north. A woman with white hair and an indifferent expression was staring intently at him, flanked by two men and one woman.
"Boss, this is Renesmee; we usually call her Ice Sister!" Nicolas pointed at the white-haired woman standing in the middle. Then he pointed at a girl with wine-red hair, around fifteen or sixteen years old, who had freckles. "This is Tina." As he introduced her, Tina stuck her tongue out at Lin Yi playfully, resembling a mischievous girl from human society. However, the white-haired woman named Renesmee showed no expression at all.
"These two are Lashar and Roots; they are twin brothers." Nicolas indicated the two effeminate blonde men, who merely looked at Lin Yi with wary expressions.
"You know our identities, right?" Before Nicolas could finish speaking, Renee Mayes stepped forward, a wave of cold air hitting Lin Yi's face directly.
"I assume you are the legendary vampire family?" Before Lin Yi could respond, an indistinct voice floated in from behind him.
