Time seemed to freeze at that moment, and those who witnessed the scene wore expressions of disbelief. It was just a fleeting instant, yet it felt like an eternity.
"Charge in! Lower the gates!" After a brief hesitation, Beatrice immediately issued the command.
Lin Yi quickly realized that the situation had not yet reached its most critical point. Although a large number of Zombies had suddenly appeared in the Defense Zone, their numbers were still fewer than the Zombie Beasts lurking behind.
"Blood Envoy! Go for it!" Lin Yi shouted, releasing the pent-up frustration within him as he was the first to rush into the city.
"Roar!" A Zombie charged towards Lin Yi, wielding a massive iron rod nearly two meters long. This Zombie was similar to the shield-wielding ones he had encountered before—large and dark-skinned.
Lin Yi took a quick glance; although this type of Zombie was scattered, there were still over thirty of them. Additionally, there were several agile Abominations, likely a new breed between intelligent and powerful Abominations, whose strength should not be underestimated.
As for the other ordinary Zombies, they appeared to have just undergone Corpseification. Most of the city defense forces were on the walls fending off the Zombie Beasts, unaware of when these creatures had infiltrated the city. Lin Yi noticed that many of these Zombies were wearing Camouflage Uniforms, suggesting they had recently come from military camps.
Clang! Lin Yi's Silver Soul collided with the Zombie's Iron Rod in a direct clash, producing a sharp and piercing sound of metal striking metal.
Lin Yi's strike held considerable force; although the Giant Zombie was strong as well, it was forced back repeatedly by Lin Yi's blow.
"Lin Steward, don't get entangled with them! Head to the command center; it's likely already overrun by Zombies!" Beatrice rushed over as well. However, these thirty-odd Giant Zombies were probably there to hold them back. If the hundreds of thousands of Zombie Beasts outside charged in, the Milan Defense Zone would become history.
Lin Yi hadn't been there long and was not fully aware of the situation. At this moment, Beatrice had organized more than thirty ten-man teams led by Mercenaries at Two-Star Combat Power level to engage with those Giant Zombies, primarily using Laser Beams for attacks.
Becoming a qualified Mercenary Leader was no easy task. As Lin Yi moved forward, he issued commands to Pachy and Jian. Their Transport Vehicle team was closest to the city gate, while armored vehicles were blocking the Zombie Beasts' attacks on the outskirts.
Being attacked from two sides is always a military taboo, and now Lin Yi and his team found themselves in a difficult position. Fortunately, Lin Yi's convoy quickly retreated into the Defense Zone while Beatrice's Mercenaries abandoned their armored vehicles and rushed inside.
In the next moment, a violent explosion erupted at the City Gate. The abandoned armored vehicles and even some Mercenaries were engulfed in flames as a result of this fierce blast, temporarily halting the Zombie Beasts' assault.
Beatrice rushed towards the command room as if nothing was wrong. A few seconds later, Lin Yi caught sight of an ordinary-looking building, but strangely, people were coming and going inside as if everything was normal.
Lin Yi's heart tightened; something was off. Beatrice glanced at him, her eyes filled with disbelief.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through Lin Yi's mind: Mental Control! This was the only explanation; otherwise, the troops outside tasked with fending off the zombies wouldn't be so quiet.
With that thought, Lin Yi frantically unleashed his Psychic Power to sense any anomalies nearby. If the other party was using Mental Control, then there must be fluctuations of Psychic Power in the surroundings.
Sure enough, Lin Yi detected a strange wave of energy in his mind. This Psychic Power was like the most resilient Nano Rope, tightly pulling at the mind of someone inside the command room. Lin Yi attempted several times to manipulate his Psychic Power to attack that force, but it had little effect.
"There's a master here!" Beatrice's expression changed as she also released her Psychic Power. However, Lin Yi could clearly feel that Beatrice's Psychic Power was somewhat scattered; it was evidently not strong enough.
"Someone in the command room has been controlled; we need to stop this immediately!" Even though Lin Yi and Beatrice had reached the door, they were blocked by someone.
Beatrice raised an eyebrow and quickly mentioned a name before stepping inside with Lin Yi. The command room was already bustling with activity; everyone seemed unaware that the city gate had been opened!
Lin Yi concentrated his Psychic Power and quickly located the controlled individual. In the next moment, he transformed into a shadow and flashed to the side of the Captain who was controlling the city gate.
"Close the gate!" Lin Yi had learned some methods of hypnotizing people from Jerry, and with his powerful Psychic Power, it wasn't difficult to execute.
As soon as Lin Yi spoke those words, a dazed expression appeared on the Captain's face as he prepared to lower the gate. But soon after, a look of ferocity crossed his features.
"Hmph!" Lin Yi snorted coldly, and in the next moment, a surge of chaotic power erupted from him. An invisible barrier enveloped both Lin Yi and the Captain, while the Psychic Power controlling the Captain was cut off from outside.
The Captain's expression returned to its previous dazed state as his fingers flew across the screen in rapid succession. When he finished typing the last letter, a message appeared on the screen indicating that the city gate was closed.
Just as Lin Yi was about to head out, a familiar roar echoed through the air. His mind buzzed, and he turned towards the source of the sound.
A bespectacled clerk was biting a soldier seated in front of a computer, and at that moment, another soldier had already been bitten!
"Go!" Without a second thought, Lin Yi threw his Silver Soul. In an instant, a flash of light illuminated the command room, followed by a spray of blood that splattered against the metallic wall gleaming with silver.
"Roar!" Although Lin Yi's strike severed the head of the bespectacled zombie, the two soldiers he had bitten were already in the process of Corpseification!
"Zombie!"
"How could there be zombies!"
"Ah—" Everyone finally reacted, and chaos erupted with various screams filling the air. The command room, populated mostly by clerks, saw few people firing back as they focused solely on escaping.
The zombie plague had spread rapidly. Lin Yi, though reluctant to see the situation worsen, could only retreat with Beatrice from the room. Outside, zombies were ruthlessly tearing into fleeing people, and the stench of blood quickly filled the area.
After swiftly dispatching a few oblivious zombies, Lin Yi had retreated to the City Gate. However, the situation there was even worse; several Zombie Beasts had already broken through. Two mercenary teams could only fight while falling back, as powerful zombies had ensnared nearly all Star Level combatants.
Moreover, what they thought was a securely closed city gate was now being forcefully held open by several Giant Zombies, preventing it from closing!
At this moment, soldiers on the walls realized that the city gate had been breached and chaos ensued. Many Zombie Beasts surged forward alongside several zombies onto the walls, and explosions and shouts erupted from above. Some soldiers even fell directly from the walls into the inner city, splattering into a heap of flesh. Yet even then, those rushing Zombie Beasts licked up every last bit of blood and gore left on the ground.
Lin Yi and Beatrice had returned to their convoy. Facing an unending assault from hundreds of thousands of Zombie Beasts without their armored vehicles, they felt overwhelmed.
"Command Center! The South Side has been breached; requesting support!" Beatrice had been coordinating with the command center of Milan Defense Zone and naturally sent out the message.
But a few seconds later, a series of screams echoed from that direction, and then there was silence!
What was happening? Could it be that even the command center had been taken over? A multitude of possibilities flashed through Lin Yi's mind, but how could the Defense Center, the stronghold of the entire area, be breached so quickly?
"We need to escape!" Beatrice's eyes were fixed on Lin Yi. At this moment, most of the mercenaries under him had already crowded onto Lin Yi's Transport Vehicle. Although his special mercenaries were running at full speed, they could not sustain such a pace for long.
Lin Yi glanced at the convoy, which was now packed with mercenaries even on the roof. Their weapons were running low; retreat was their only option, or they would be swallowed by the vast ocean of Zombie Beasts.
The surging Zombies and Zombie Beasts were already surrounding the entire convoy. Lin Yi dared not hesitate any longer and immediately commanded all vehicles to speed toward the city.
"It’s useless to escape anywhere now. If even the command center has been taken, those Zombies must have effectively controlled the resistance forces in the Milan Defense Zone!" Beatrice paced anxiously inside Lin Yi's command vehicle. For ease of command, Lin Yi's vehicle was not yet filled with mercenaries.
Lin Yi felt equally restless; chaos reigned outside, and he could hear various screams from time to time. The frontline Defense Zone was primarily a garrison area, but as one moved deeper inside, there were more ordinary residents whose resistance was naturally no match for soldiers.
At that moment, Nicolas, who had been hiding inside the command vehicle and rarely ventured out, suddenly approached Lin Yi and said, "Follow me. There’s a barren mountain nearby where the Zombie Virus can’t thrive. We can hide there!"
Lin Yi looked up at Nicolas. This somewhat sleazy-looking vampire was merely a lonely soul with a bit of courage.
"You lead the way!" Lin Yi had no other options now. The sudden breach of the Milan Defense Zone was likely something no one had anticipated. Who would have thought that their enemy would employ tactics to launch an internal and external assault? Even a powerful city defense force would struggle to withstand such an attack.
So it was escape once again, wasn't it? A sense of unshakeable disappointment welled up within Lin Yi.
