The piercing cries instantly enveloped the entire battlefield, as the armored vehicles, which had seemed like "good little babies," suddenly unleashed tongues of flame from their sides, surging with intense heat across the vast expanse of several kilometers. The booming explosion quickly drowned out the sounds of light weaponry. With the Zombie Beasts already at the gates, the defending troops were unable to use heavy weaponry for attacks; instead, it was Lin Yi and Beatrice, who were flanking from behind, that found it convenient to bombard with heavy firepower.
The Zombie Beast ranks were bombarded into disarray, but they continued to surge toward Lin Yi's convoy. Despite their fierce firepower, it was still too weak compared to the hundreds of thousands of Zombie Beasts. Once their ammunition ran out, they would face utter destruction!
"Whoosh!" Just as dozens of Zombie Beasts broke through layers of defenses and reached the convoy, flames shot out from the barrels of the outer armored vehicles, creating fire columns several meters long. The charging Zombie Beasts were instantly ignited, yet they felt no pain; even as they turned into pillars of fire, they continued to crash into the armored vehicles.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" A series of collision sounds erupted. Although the force of the Zombie Beasts posed no threat to the armored vehicles, it was enough to slow their speed. This delay allowed even more Zombie Beasts to swarm around them!
Lin Yi fired desperately, but despite the power of the Laser Beam, it had little effect on these fearless Zombie Beasts; in fact, a single slash from Lin Yi's blade proved to be more effective.
Minutes passed, and Lin Yi and his team found themselves almost stationary while more and more Zombie Beasts surrounded them. Although they could clearly see the Quarantine Wall ahead, crossing that distance seemed impossible.
"Beatrice, at this rate we won't even reach the gate before exhausting our ammunition!" Faced with the endless tide of Zombie Beasts, Lin Yi felt a sense of dread. If he acted alone, he was confident he could reach the wall, but with thousands of people here, he couldn't just run off by himself.
"We have no choice but to engage in close combat; our ammunition is running low!" Although Beatrice's Golden Mercenary Corps had brought plenty of ammunition before, they hadn't anticipated facing hundreds of thousands of Zombie Beasts. Breaking through would be extremely difficult.
"What do you mean by close combat?" Lin Yi was confident in his personal combat skills, but engaging in melee under these circumstances felt like a death sentence.
Beatrice smiled mysteriously and quickly instructed through her earpiece. Soon after, the outer armored vehicles accelerated and formed three parallel columns with less than five meters between each vehicle. Lin Yi's Transport Vehicle lagged behind due to its lower defensive capabilities.
Once the convoy spread out, those Zombie Beasts that had previously been unable to break through suddenly surged forward like wolves sensing blood, rushing desperately toward the gaps between the vehicles!
"What are you doing?!" Lin Yi exclaimed in shock. Wasn't this leading them straight into a trap?
"Hehe, if you want your Transport Vehicle behind us to avoid being wiped out by these Zombie Beasts, then come with me and let’s make a clean sweep!" Beatrice wielded a blade that was about one-third longer than Lin Yi's Silver Soul.
In an instant, without waiting for Lin Yi's response, Beatrice transformed into a blur and charged ahead. At that moment, Lin Yi noticed that many people had already jumped out from the armored vehicles; he estimated that at least they were all Two-Star combat level fighters! Each person wielded a long blade without any other weapons!
Lin Yi's mental perception abilities had grown stronger over time and soon he detected that among them was even one mercenary who appeared to be at Five-Star Combat Power level! This left Lin Yi astonished at the strength of the First Mercenary Corps; even just a division was significantly stronger than him.
The current situation saw three rows of Armored Convoy advancing together with two five-meter-wide gaps in between. The Zombie Beasts were not clashing head-on with the armored vehicles but instead weaving through these gaps. If Lin Yi and his team couldn't control the number of Zombie Beasts, they would ultimately be surrounded!
"Everyone! Two-Star Combat Power fighters follow me out!" The Armored Convoy had formed a cross-shaped attack formation. Most of the Zombie Beasts were still blocked outside the convoy; however, soon over a hundred Zombie Beasts surged into the central gap!
Lin Yi was the first to leap out with his blade drawn. He had been standing on top of the command vehicle alongside Beatrice until now; however, that command vehicle had already fallen behind!
"Other team members, stay behind the convoy and focus on defense, assisting the armored flanks in resisting the attacks from the Zombie Beasts!" Lin Yi added casually. Although the Transport Vehicles couldn't directly collide with the Zombie Beasts, the mercenaries inside were top-notch fighters, and it was not a big problem to mount a defensive counterattack given the favorable circumstances.
As Lin Yi's orders were issued, over a dozen figures jumped out of the vehicles. The thirty or so Transport Vehicles split into two groups, their main task being to assist the armored vehicles on either side in blocking the advance of the Zombie Beasts.
The wind howled around Lin Yi, sounding as if countless vengeful spirits were screaming nearby, causing a sense of agitation in his heart.
"Roar!" At that moment, a Corpseified cow charged violently towards Lin Yi's chest!
Under the assault of the Zombie Virus, even the tamest livestock had turned ferocious. A cold glint flashed in Lin Yi's eyes as he pushed off the ground with his right foot, flipping into the air. In an instant, he appeared upside down above the cow's head, and with a flash of silver light, a massive gash opened up on its skull.
Lin Yi had no time to admire his handiwork; he dashed towards the next Zombie Beast! In an instant, the narrow passage formed by two rows of vehicles erupted with bursts of light as those Zombie Beasts were no match for Lin Yi and were swiftly dispatched. The members of the Golden Mercenary Corps were not surprised; they had likely grown accustomed to such displays. However, Lin Yi had just noticed that one of the fighters with Five-Star combat power was actually a young man who looked even younger than him. This young man's techniques were ruthless; wielding dual blades like Lin Yi but slightly shorter, every strike he made was almost brushing against the Zombie Beasts as he took them down one by one!
As they fought their way through, Lin Yi and his group had already slain no less than five hundred Zombie Beasts. The ground they traversed was littered with their corpses, and a foul stench began to waft from the fluids seeping out of these bodies, invading everyone's nostrils.
However, as they drew closer to the Quarantine Wall, an unexpected incident occurred. A shell landed among their convoy from atop the wall. If it weren't for everyone being exceptionally quick on their feet, there could have been fatalities. Even so, several people sustained injuries and had to retreat to the armored vehicles for rest.
Upon learning of this situation, Beatrice quickly contacted the City Defense Force while Lin Yi went directly to Bruh for resolution. After that incident, nothing similar occurred again. Given their large convoy size, such occurrences should have been unlikely. However, with the battle raging fiercely, Lin Yi didn't bother to think too much about it.
Though their convoy was not advancing quickly over several kilometers, it was still better than being stuck in place. After nearly an hour of fighting, most people were exhausted and ammunition was running low; fortunately, they had finally reached the City Gate.
The Golden Mercenary Corps lived up to its reputation as the First Mercenary Corps; upon reaching the City Gate, they cleared out a space. The armored vehicles then formed a semi-circular formation around the outer perimeter of the City Gate. This allowed Lin Yi and his team a brief window to rush into the defense area; however, this meant that those armored vehicles would likely suffer heavy losses.
Seeing that Lin Yi and his team had reached the City Gate, the Zombie Beasts launched reckless attacks without hesitation. The strongest fighters among them had no choice but to engage in close combat with incoming Zombie Beasts due to dwindling ammunition. On their way here, aside from encountering a few Giant Zombies attacking their armored vehicles, they hadn't faced many more Giant Zombies. Now that they had arrived at the City Gate, although there were no Giant Zombies present, those already aggressive Zombie Beasts attacked even more chaotically and recklessly.
Lin Yi's hands moved tirelessly with Silver Soul swirling around him like an impenetrable barrier; yet still, there seemed to be no end to the Zombie Beasts pouring in. After more than an hour of fierce battle, Lin Yi felt himself beginning to tire.
"Those guys won't open the gate for us!" A gust of wind rushed past him as Beatrice's voice reached Lin Yi's ears.
Lin Yi's heart sank; his movements with Silver Soul slowed momentarily as he barely avoided being overwhelmed by a Zombie Beast breaking through his defenses.
"What do they mean?" Lin Yi suspected he already knew but dared not confirm it.
"Damn it! There are too many Zombies! Opening the city gates now would be inviting wolves into our home!" Beatrice spat angrily for the first time in front of Lin Yi.
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly chuckled coldly; his eyes held not anger but an indescribable sorrow. Then he spoke hoarsely: "Are we going to watch them die without helping?"
"Why rely on them! Let's climb the city gate and open it ourselves!" Beatrice declared, turning her gaze toward the city gate. With her Seven-Star Level combat power, the towering walls that stood several dozen meters high were hardly a challenge.
Lin Yi pondered for a moment and realized this was indeed their only option. Otherwise, even if they bombarded the massive forty-centimeter-thick alloy gate, it would take a long time to break through, and doing so would only trap them in an unjust situation.
In the next instant, Lin Yi and Beatrice vanished from sight, reappearing three meters up on the Quarantine Wall.
"Whoosh!" Two figures climbed upward at a ghostly speed along the Quarantine Wall, each powerful push allowing them to ascend three meters at a time.
Within ten seconds, they were less than two meters from the top of the wall. At that moment, Lin Yi felt a tingling sensation emanating from the Silver Soul in his hand, even causing his hair to crackle with static electricity.
Thoughts raced through Lin Yi's mind; he had experienced this feeling before in the room attacked by the Darknight Vampire!
"Don't go up! There's an electric net above!" Lin Yi shouted as he yanked Beatrice back, signaling her to descend!
Though Beatrice was frustrated, she had no choice but to heed Lin Yi's warning. The two of them jumped down at an even faster speed. Just as they landed, the Metal Gate slowly began to open!
Lin Yi and Beatrice were utterly astonished by this turn of events. Their expressions froze in disbelief; they never expected such a result!
"Has the city fallen?"
