In the Forward Command Post of the Milan Defense Zone, chaos reigned. People rushed in and out, their faces marked by anxiety, fear, or numbness. The crisis of the Zombies had persisted for over six months, and humanity was retreating steadily, with even the last bastion of survival now under siege by the undead. Perhaps in the next moment, the city would fall—what then would they do?
In a separate room within the command post, a burly general stared silently at a screen. Behind him stood a Major, his brow furrowed, clearly grappling with a troubling situation.
"General, we've just discovered that a family of three inside the city has been infected with the Zombie Virus. I'm concerned there might be unforeseen consequences!" The Major steadied himself and relayed the latest intelligence.
The general's shoulders visibly trembled. Having withdrawn from Rome, he understood all too well that once someone in the inner city contracted the Zombie Virus, it would spread at an alarming rate.
"Have we found the source?" If there were infections within the city, it was highly likely that a Zombie had already infiltrated.
"Yes, this was discovered by members of the Lance Bureau. They managed to eliminate that Zombie, but it's estimated that this particular one possessed at least Five-Star combat capability. Unfortunately, two members of the Lance Bureau lost their lives in the encounter, and three others were infected with the Zombie Virus; however, they have already been treated with Serum!" The Major continued his report.
The general took a deep breath. "Immediately initiate a citywide search! You are to fully cooperate with your colleagues from the Lance Bureau; we cannot allow a single Zombie to escape!"
With a sharp salute, the Major quickly exited.
...
Lin Yi felt a surge of astonishment; this dark Zombie was surprisingly formidable. Just moments ago, when Lin Yi kicked a steel plate from its grasp, he was met with an overwhelming force that sent tremors through his entire body. Such strength could rival even Taishan at full power!
"Roar!" The Giant Zombie paid no heed to Lin Yi's thoughts. After its initial strike missed as Lin Yi deftly dodged, it charged forward again.
"Bring it on!" Lin Yi steadied himself and leaped into action, vaulting over the Zombie's head and landing behind it. He certainly wouldn't be foolish enough to confront such brute strength head-on; strategy was key in battle.
Before his feet could touch the ground, Lin Yi twisted at his waist and swung at the back of the Giant Zombie with all his might. He aimed to use his downward momentum to deliver a powerful blow!
Unexpectedly, the Giant Zombie did not see Lin Yi in front of it and immediately turned around!
With a loud metallic crash, a sharp and piercing sound echoed as Lin Yi's blade struck against the steel plate. The immense force failed to break through the steel's defense, but Lin Yi's Silver Soul still carved a gash several dozen centimeters long into the surface.
Lin Yi frowned; this situation was not right! He knew how sharp Silver Soul was. If it were just an ordinary steel plate, his strike would have easily pierced through. However, now it was merely a scratch, which was highly illogical!
The Giant Zombie did not give Lin Yi a moment to think. In the next instant, a massive shadow lunged toward him. Lin Yi pushed off the ground with all his might and leaped away. But the Giant Zombie followed closely like a relentless shadow. No matter how many times Lin Yi jumped, he could not evade the Giant Zombie.
If they continued to clash head-on, Lin Yi had no idea how long it would take to deal with this Zombie. From his current assessment, this Zombie was nearly at Six-Star combat level, but its enormous size and the strange iron shield it wielded made it far from easy to handle.
Lin Yi swiftly changed his position; although the Giant Zombie possessed immense strength, its speed was slightly lacking.
The surrounding battle had grown increasingly intense. Out of the corner of his eye, Lin Yi noticed that several Two-Star Mercenaries from his team had already jumped into melee combat. However, facing hundreds of thousands of Zombies, those Two-Star Mercenaries seemed like mere specks of dust lost in the ocean—utterly insignificant.
In just over ten seconds, Beatrice finally managed to bring the armored vehicle that had been thrown into the air by the Giant Zombie back onto solid ground. However, every time she attempted to rush over, she was besieged by several larger Zombies. It appeared these Zombies were formidable opponents as well.
If this dragged on any longer, everyone would likely find themselves stuck in a quagmire. Lin Yi's Psychic Power had not fully recovered yet, but he could not afford to worry about that now.
With a swift motion, he made both Silver Souls hover in mid-air while he charged directly toward the Giant Zombie.
Seeing Lin Yi take the initiative to attack seemed to excite the Giant Zombie; it let out what resembled a laugh before swinging its iron shield down toward Lin Yi.
As Lin Yi used his Psychic Power to control both Silver Souls and monitor the Giant Zombie's movements simultaneously, he calculated the trajectory of its attack just as the Giant Zombie raised its arm.
In the next moment, the shield came crashing down onto the ground with a deafening roar, but Lin Yi's figure vanished at that very instant!
"Swish!" Just as the Giant Zombie was observing, a sound of flesh being sliced echoed through the air! Silver Soul launched a surprise attack from behind, striking the Giant Zombie's neck with a single blow.
Lin Yi's face lit up with joy as he prepared to manipulate Silver Soul to spin. However, the Giant Zombie suddenly swelled its arm and reached back at an odd angle, pulling Silver Soul out from its back.
The Giant Zombie gripped Silver Soul tightly, and Lin Yi found that his control over Silver Soul was momentarily lost. He never expected the opponent to react so quickly, but without hesitation, he controlled another Silver Soul and shot it straight toward the Zombie's forehead!
"Whoosh—" Silver Soul easily pierced through the Giant Zombie's skull, plunging deep into its head. At that moment, Lin Yi hesitated no longer and desperately urged Silver Soul to start spinning.
To his surprise, the Giant Zombie discarded its shield and firmly grasped the hilt of the blade, yanking Silver Soul out of its head, splattering a mix of black and red brain matter everywhere.
With two Silver Souls lost, Lin Yi's combat power was halved. Aside from his speed surpassing that of the Giant Zombie, he had no confidence in defeating it!
"Ah—" In a moment of desperation, Lin Yi let out a roar, desperately trying to force Silver Soul out of the Giant Zombie's grip! The Giant Zombie clung to Silver Soul with all its might; although it was nearly thrown off balance several times by Silver Soul's struggles, it showed no intention of letting go.
Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck Lin Yi's mind. In the next moment, he exerted all his strength to propel both Silver Souls into the air!
In an astonishing turn of events, the Zombie that had been on the ground began to rise along with Silver Soul. Lin Yi felt a surge of excitement and without hesitation shouted as he maneuvered Silver Soul to soar upward. Moments later, the Giant Zombie was lifted dozens of meters into the sky by Lin Yi's Silver Soul!
"Go!" With a wave of his hands, Lin Yi sent Silver Soul hurtling toward the ground. From such a height combined with the weight of the Giant Zombie, the impact would be enough to crush even steel!
The airborne Giant Zombie seemed to sense something was amiss, but before it could react, its entire body crashed down like a cannonball with a resounding "Boom!" into the midst of the Zombie Beast horde.
The horde erupted into chaos as limbs flailed wildly; the Zombie Beasts were thrown into temporary disarray. At that moment, Lin Yi felt a release of power from Silver Soul; the Giant Zombie had lost control over it.
"Swish swish swish!" In the next instant, Lin Yi maneuvered Silver Soul back through the throng of Zombie Beasts. Along the way, those blocking his path were sliced cleanly in half by Silver Soul.
“Silver Soul” spun rapidly in mid-air, shaking off all the remnants of blood on its blade before landing back in Lin Yi's hand.
Then Lin Yi looked around and noticed that no other Giant Zombie was approaching, and the few Zombies that had been attacking Beatrice were ultimately wiped out by him.
There were still many Zombie Beasts surrounding the city wall. After a fierce battle, Lin Yi had exhausted much of his stamina, so he decided not to continue fighting. After a few quick movements, he jumped onto the roof of the command vehicle.
At this moment, the convoy resumed its advance. However, it had taken Lin Yi less than a minute to eliminate that Zombie.
“It seems they were well-prepared this time!” Beatrice stood beside Lin Yi, her breath slightly ragged.
“Yeah, those Zombies seemed quite powerful!” Lin Yi knew Beatrice's combat abilities; if they were ordinary Zombies, they wouldn’t have worn him out like this.
“Not just powerful; those Zombies felt more human. If it weren't for the intense aura of death surrounding them, I might have thought I was mistaken!” Beatrice said with an odd expression, the flickering lights casting eerie shadows on her face.
Lin Yi was well aware of the mutations occurring in these Zombies. If this continued, humanity might truly face defeat!
“Let’s go all out! It’s too dangerous outside!” After a moment's hesitation, Beatrice pressed her earpiece to give orders. Lin Yi couldn’t help but roll his eyes at her, wondering how she could have fought for so long without using her full strength.
Before Lin Yi could ask anything, a sudden clattering of metal echoed from the outer perimeter of the Armored Convoy. The next moment, piercing shrieks filled the air as vehicle-mounted Missiles, with crimson tails, shot towards the horde of Zombie Beasts.
