The unmanned surveillance aircraft scanned the area for several kilometers, revealing very few Zombies, which posed little threat to Lin Yi and his group. However, Lin Yi still felt uneasy; the Giant Zombie they encountered earlier had shown an alarming level of combat prowess and wore a disturbingly sinister smile. He had never seen such a strange smile on a human face.
Could this be a trap? Lin Yi pondered as he arranged the sniper positions. Those Intelligent Zombies were undoubtedly planning how to attack human cities, but there were no other signs of their activities at the moment.
"Lin Steward, the entire building has been cleared!" Lin Yi didn't turn around, knowing that the voice laced with charm belonged to none other than Ouyang Shasha. If he had to pick the most feminine woman he had ever met, it would undoubtedly be her.
"Miss Ouyang, thank you for your hard work!" Every time he faced Ouyang Shasha, Lin Yi felt an indescribable sensation in his heart.
"Lin Steward, you can just call me Ouyang Shasha," she replied, a blush creeping across her fair face as she lowered her head slightly.
Lin Yi smiled and glanced around, noticing everyone else was busy. He lowered his voice and said, "You're a vampire, aren't you?"
Ouyang Shasha froze for a moment, her pale face betraying no emotion as she stared intently at Lin Yi without saying a word.
"You can turn invisible; Benito can too, and that Carlo has wings. Your entire Dark Night Vampire Organization is made up of vampires, right?" Lin Yi observed Ouyang Shasha with interest, hoping she would deny it, but she seemed not to understand what he meant.
After a long silence, tears welled up in Ouyang Shasha's eyes as she began to sob softly. "When I was younger, everyone called me a monster, so I never really had any friends. Later on, when I was wandering outside and they took me in, it was from them that I felt a glimmer of warmth. Now, after more than ten years have passed, I thought no one would see me as a monster anymore. But unexpectedly, Lin Steward…," Ouyang Shasha's voice broke off as she began to cry uncontrollably, tears streaming down her cheeks.
The people nearby noticed the situation and cast strange looks at the two of them. Lin Yi felt somewhat at a loss; he wanted to comfort Ouyang Shasha with a hug but hesitated after opening his arms.
Suddenly, he felt something soft against him. Ouyang Shasha had thrown herself into his embrace, her soft body pressing against him. A warm sensation surged through him. However, she quickly pulled away from his arms, her face flushed bright red and her tear-filled eyes sparkling as she covered her mouth and laughed.
Lin Yi awkwardly swallowed and said, "I'm sorry; I didn't mean to. It's just that we are all part of the Mercenary Alliance and I hope to learn more about you."
"It's nothing really, Lin… Lin Steward. Actually, we are all Mutants too; these abilities don't really help much and instead bring us quite a bit of Trouble," Ouyang Shasha said as she lowered her head again, her golden hair cascading down like a waterfall—beautiful beyond measure.
Just then, a loud crash echoed from downstairs. Lin Yi's heart sank; he immediately leaped from the tenth floor down towards the ground below but landed on the window ledge after jumping only three stories!
A few seconds later, Lin Yi jumped down to the ground. At that moment, he saw those who had been guarding the hall were now firing their Laser Guns.
There were actually more than ten Zombies in the hall! Lin Yi was taken aback when he realized the situation, and he quickly drew the Laser Gun hanging at his waist, starting to shoot at the Zombies that were desperately trying to rush out.
Three people dealing with over ten Zombies was not too difficult; Lin Yi could basically blow the head off a Zombie with a single shot. Soon, others rushed down from upstairs, and the dozen or so Zombies in the hall were quickly surrounded. Within a minute, they were all wiped out.
"What happened?" Lin Yi leaped to the entrance and asked one of the guards stationed there.
"Report, Captain! Those ten or so Zombies suddenly charged out from the direction of the entrance!" One of the guards replied, his expression showing signs of fear. After all, it was their first encounter with real Zombies—those decaying figures, some with only half a head left, still moving around were truly unforgettable.
Lin Yi furrowed his brow, sensing something was wrong. He quickly stepped up to one of the Zombies. Its head had been burned through by a Laser Beam, leaving a large hole where only bone remained. The mouth gaped open, emitting a foul stench from within. Although this Zombie had little flesh left and showed signs of decay, it appeared as if new flesh might be starting to grow back. Suddenly, Lin Yi's mind buzzed; this type of Zombie was an Intelligent Zombie!
The presence of over ten Intelligent Zombies gathering in this place was definitely not a trivial matter. According to Zhao Pei's theory, for a Zombie to evolve, it must continuously consume human flesh and drink human blood, yet very few could evolve into Intelligent Zombies.
The Zombies lay sprawled across the smooth floor. Lin Yi waved his hand, signaling to move them out for burning. Just as he was about to contact other teams, Witerson II, who had been monitoring from the command vehicle, suddenly rushed over with a troubled expression. "Boss, I just checked the footage from the surveillance drones and found that although there are few Zombies, they aren't wandering aimlessly like before; it seems they're gathered together for some purpose."
Upon hearing this, Lin Yi quickly pulled up the information received on his wrist device. The display showed those blurry figures moving in an orderly fashion towards one direction like intelligent beings. Once they reached a certain location, they didn’t linger but continued on to another place. Looking at this shadowy scene made Lin Yi's heart chill; these were indeed Intelligent Zombies!
How could there be so many Intelligent Zombies? Even if humans had been consumed in large numbers, it shouldn't lead to such an abundance of Intelligent Zombies appearing—especially since they seemed to be acting as scouts! Lin Yi's mind raced as he sought to find the key to this problem. Engaging in battle without understanding the enemy's strength was extremely dangerous.
"Boss, don't worry too much; no matter how strong these Zombies are, they can't compare to those Corpseification Sea Beasts!" Witerson II said in an attempt to comfort Lin Yi upon seeing his grim expression.
"Sea Beasts? Yes! Those Sea Beasts! These Zombies must be evolving by preying on Sea Beasts for energy!" Lin Yi suddenly shouted but was soon filled with dread.
With so many Intelligent Zombies around, it meant that there would also be quite a few of those incredibly powerful Zombies!
"Witerson II, quickly request satellite surveillance; we need to expand our search area!" Lin Yi felt cornered; he needed to clarify just how many enemies there were. Was it really as Bruh said—that because this area was under artillery coverage, there were fewer Zombies?
Witerson II didn’t ask further and turned back towards the command vehicle.
"Requesting support! We have over ten Giant Zombies here; their combat power is too strong and personnel casualties have already occurred!" A voice suddenly came through Lin Yi's earpiece—it was Bai!
Bai's combat power was only at Star Level 1, and in front of the Giant Zombies, he could only protect himself. Typically, a single Giant Zombie could take on ten people, and now with more than ten appearing at once, a hundred-person team was simply not enough!
The search targets for the ten teams were all near the convoy, so they were naturally close together. Bai and his group were investigating a large exhibition hall not far away, just a few hundred meters from Lin Yi.
With a rush, Lin Yi sprinted with all his might and reached the exhibition hall in a matter of seconds. The hundred-person team was currently split into three squads, frantically shooting at the approaching Zombies.
Strangely, these Zombies were using tables and chairs to block the Laser Beam attacks. Although those tables and chairs were easily destroyed by the beams, the fact that these hulking figures knew to use objects to shield themselves indicated that they were no ordinary Giant Zombies!
Ordinary Laser Beams often required multiple hits to take down a single Zombie, so despite the fierce attacks from the team, the Zombies suffered almost no casualties. In the center of the battle lay two bloody corpses; one of them was barely recognizable as it had been torn in half, with blood and entrails splattered everywhere.
Lin Yi never expected the situation to be like this; it seemed as if these dozen Giant Zombies had suddenly appeared. Suddenly, at that moment, one Zombie broke through the Laser Beam defenses and was charging towards the crowd!
"Kill!" Lin Yi gritted his teeth as his Silver Soul shot out with a sharp sound. In an instant, Silver Soul transformed into a streak of light and pierced through the head of the Zombie that had just charged out. Dark blood and blackened brain matter oozed from the gaping hole, but the Zombie's momentum remained undeterred!
Lin Yi waved his hand, and Silver Soul returned once more. This time it circled around the Zombie's neck. The Giant Zombie continued to charge forward for a few steps before its head fell off.
With a thud, the Giant Zombie collapsed to the ground, splattering foul-smelling fluids everywhere.
At this moment, Lin Yi's original hundred-person team had already rushed over, and nearly two hundred people fired in unison. With Lin Yi suppressing the Zombies that had broken through their defenses, within two minutes, all of the Giant Zombies were completely eliminated!
