Nothing is more painful than being able to obtain something that you don't truly want, while what you genuinely desire remains out of reach. If there are no other options, perhaps this choice is the best one. Lin Yi had been controlling his emotions, fearing that he might agree. Since he would always have to bear the burden of someone, it was better to make a decision sooner rather than later; otherwise, he would only sink deeper.
Bruh had presented a condition that no one could refuse. As long as Lin Yi agreed, he could immediately become a truly influential person in the world. Status, wealth, beauty—everything a man could desire was within Lin Yi's grasp with just a nod.
But what about Li Qiweng? After so many years, Lin Yi had grown accustomed to Li Qiweng's presence, even if she was no longer by his side. Now, he felt something in his heart rubbing against him, making him so uncomfortable that he wanted to rip his heart out.
This was why Lin Yi felt cold sweat breaking out. His inner turmoil had only one reason: Ying Sa still held significant importance in his heart. But now he had to choose one or the other; there was no other way. If he hesitated any longer, he might not even have the chance to choose.
After Bruh finished speaking, he looked at Lin Yi with a smile, convinced that Lin Yi would agree. Such a condition could only be proposed for Ying Sa; how could anyone refuse it? Once such a condition was put forth, a normal person would not decline.
"I can't agree!" At that moment, Lin Yi's eyes suddenly welled up with tears as he missed Li Qiweng immensely. If Li Qiweng were by his side, he would reject even the best of offers without hesitation.
Ying Sa still wore a smile on her face; perhaps in her eyes, the unseen Li Qiweng didn't count as her "rival." She had always been inherently proud. When she heard Lin Yi's refusal, her originally sweet smile froze completely. The next moment, tears streamed down her porcelain-like face like pearls slipping silently to the ground.
Bruh even thought Lin Yi was joking; his face was filled with playful amusement. But when he saw Ying Sa's expression, he realized that Lin Yi was serious—he refused to become his son-in-law!
"Li Qiweng has been missing for a long time. I've seen the battle footage; her chances of survival are almost zero!" Bruh's expression suddenly changed; the smile on his face twisted into something fierce. He did not want anyone to harm Third Child.
"She must still be alive!" After saying this, Lin Yi prepared to stand up and leave. However, Ying Sa had already gotten up and walked out without looking back. She wiped her tears but managed not to cry out loud.
"Li Xianzong sees that you still have some strength left and naturally doesn't want to tell you that Li Qiweng is dead!" Bruh's voice seemed to come from an endless abyss of darkness. Lin Yi felt as if he had fallen into a cold cave from which there was no escape.
Lin Yi had thought about Bruh's words before; many times he believed that Li Qiweng must be dead. Otherwise, given her personality, why hadn't she contacted him for so long? Li Xianzong had always maintained a positive image in Lin Yi's mind, so he unconsciously believed him. But if Li Qiweng were really nearby, why wouldn't she reach out? Did she have some concerns? The greater possibility was that Li Xianzong was deceiving him and didn’t want him to become useless. Was this really for his own good? Countless questions flashed through Lin Yi's mind. Or perhaps Li Xianzong was simply using him to kill more zombies—that was his value!
"And what about you, Mr. Bruh? Ying Sa likes me at least because we've survived together multiple times! But you? Is it just because you indulge Ying Sa that she has no objections to you?" Lin Yi looked at Bruh with despair in his eyes; perhaps he had always just been a pawn.
"Yes, Third Child is my most beloved child. I will do everything possible to give her what she wants!" Bruh stood up, his aura suddenly growing stronger. As a father, it was only natural for him to love his daughter deeply.
"Really? You understand me so well that you think I will definitely agree?" Lin Yi was about to leave; he didn't want to get entangled in this argument any longer. Regardless, the outcome would not change.
"Captain Lin may not know that the moment you became a First-Class Steward of the Mercenary Alliance, all your information was already on my desk. I even know your experiences over the past twenty years better than you do!" Bruh's voice suddenly became calm, as if the previous matter had already been put behind them.
Lin Yi felt a chill run down his spine, completely devoid of any warmth. He had been wondering what Bruh was really up to and why he wielded such power. The fact that he could arm so many people was definitely not something a simple merchant or underworld figure could achieve.
"So, you actually want to use me!" A sudden realization struck Lin Yi; Bruh valued him not just because of Ying Sa, but also because of Lin Yi's own abilities.
Although there were many Ability Users and Mutants in this world, very few possessed combat prowess like his. If he could gain protection from someone like him, it would significantly increase the chances of survival in this zombie-infested world. Eliminating zombies was a task for the big shots; most people were more concerned with how to stay alive.
"It's just mutual reliance. I have enough resources to build a formidable force for you, and your abilities are enough to command respect. So I hope you can agree to my request, even if it means you never marry Ying Sa!" Bruh reclined on the sofa, his demeanor becoming lazily relaxed once again.
"You even use Ying Sa; you really are a great father!" Lin Yi felt that this person before him was utterly incomprehensible—almost beastly!
"What do you mean by using her? I'm just helping her find a good home. No matter how powerful you are, according to my estimates, you're only at the Seven-Star Level, and not even the strongest among them. I know she truly likes you; over all these years, she has never cried except for a few tears shed for you. That's why I've gone to great lengths to help you—I hope you can become strong enough to take care of her. After all, no one knows what the future holds in this world, so I want you to be stronger!" Bruh's gray eyes fixed intently on Lin Yi, as if trying to discern his thoughts.
Lin Yi found it hard to refute Bruh; after all, he had done so much for Ying Sa, which hardly seemed like exploitation. However, what puzzled Lin Yi was Bruh's mention of the Seven-Star Level. It seemed that at his level of power, ordinary combat rankings were no longer sufficient for judgment. Although Nicolas had classified Lin Yi as having Marquis-level combat strength, that was still based on vampire power classifications.
"What is the standard of the Seven-Star Level?" Lin Yi seized the opportunity to divert the topic away from Ying Sa.
Looking up at Lin Yi from his position, Bruh smiled and said, "Based on all your combat videos, it seems you can almost achieve instantaneous movement within a range—your speed can reach up to one hundred meters per second. Given your ability to slay over twenty B-Type Zombies in one breath, it would take you exhausting yourself to eliminate three thousand A-Type Zombies. Most impressive is your Psychic Power; it should have reached a level where you can manipulate five objects simultaneously. Overall, you're already at an upper level within the Seven-Star classification. However, in life-and-death situations, you should be able to unleash your full Seven-Star combat potential!"
Lin Yi had never had an intuitive assessment of his combat strength; after all, he rarely encountered anyone with exceptional fighting capabilities aside from those he had met before—excluding Beatrice and Anthony. Even now, he wasn't entirely confident he could defeat either of them.
"This must be the evaluation level of the Mercenary Alliance!" Lin Yi casually remarked since all he had encountered were strong members of the Mercenary Alliance; only they would have a need for such classifications among their members.
"Ha ha, Lin Steward is indeed a smart person, and Third Child didn't misjudge you!" Bruh suddenly burst into laughter, looking as if he had struck a great deal.
Lin Yi was momentarily stunned, a seemingly impossible thought flashing through his mind.
"You’re also part of the Mercenary Alliance?" Lin Yi had always wondered why Bruh had so many armed personnel. It seemed now that he was also a Mercenary, perhaps even a high-ranking one!
"You’re not too dumb after all; you finally figured it out. Just think about it—if I didn’t know you well, how could I casually marry off my precious daughter to you and give you such great benefits?" Bruh stepped closer to Lin Yi, his face regaining its cheerful expression.
All of us are on the same side? Half of this was made up of our own people? Although Lin Yi found it hard to accept, there was no reason for Bruh to deceive him. But with such immense power, what position did Bruh hold in the alliance? Could he be the Vice Chairman or even the President of the entire alliance? In an instant, Lin Yi's mind raced. If he were truly facing the leader of the entire alliance, was that a good thing or a bad thing?
"May I ask what your position is in the alliance?" Lin Yi felt somewhat uncertain; after all, the person before him could very well be a towering figure.
"Oh me? I'm just an ordinary Butler, without even a rank. There’s usually nothing much for me to do," Bruh casually pulled Lin Yi back down to sit and continued, "Let’s talk about matters concerning men!"
"Huh? What?" Lin Yi was interrupted by Bruh and found it awkward to press further.
"You should have heard from Beatrice about the siege mission from the United Nations Security Council. This time, the alliance hopes you can stay in the Milan Defense Zone and help me capture a City of Death!" Bruh's expression turned serious; this was indeed no trivial matter.
"City of Death? What is City of Death?" A bad feeling surged within Lin Yi, making him feel as if the entire room had suddenly darkened.
