"Woods, how many Zombies are there?" Lin Yi asked. They had not yet reached their destination, but from the sounds, it seemed there were quite a few Zombies.
Woods closed his eyes and replied, "I can't see the end; there are at least a thousand Zombies surrounding both banks of the river. I estimate that place is also where the river is blocked."
"You all cover me from behind; I'll go take a look!" With a thousand Zombies, if one got surrounded, then apart from Lin Yi, the others would have little hope of escaping.
In the next moment, Lin Yi transformed into a blur and vanished from everyone's sight. They were less than a thousand meters away from the gathering of Zombies and would reach it quickly.
The surroundings had already plunged into darkness. Lin Yi was accustomed to using Psychic Power to assess his surroundings. He noticed that each time he overexerted his Psychic Power, it would grow significantly stronger once it recovered. This time, he had nearly exhausted his Psychic Power while dodging missile bombardments, but now that it had recovered, he felt it was even more potent.
The cries of the Zombies sounded like the lamentations of lost souls, filled with sorrow yet brimming with endless rage. Lin Yi found himself surrounded by Zombies, but they seemed unaware of his presence. Of course, the Zombies were all facing away from him, fixated on the river's surface while he hid behind a burned-out building.
Taking advantage of this moment, Lin Yi observed the river channel. In his mental perception, the riverbed was covered with Zombies, stacked densely like a mass grave, layer upon layer. The bottom layer consisted mostly of stronger Zombies holding large stones to anchor themselves against the current, while each subsequent layer clutched various sizes of rubble. This Zombie-formed barricade was about twenty meters thick and over ten meters high. Lin Yi calculated their submarine's speed; even at maximum power, it would likely be completely blocked by this horde of over ten thousand Zombies.
Suddenly, a foul wind swept through. Lin Yi instinctively turned his neck and swung his right fist.
With a loud crack of breaking bones, Lin Yi stepped back a few paces. At that moment, he realized that a corpse lying nearby had somehow become animated and attempted to ambush him.
Lin Yi's punch carried seven-tenths of his strength and directly shattered the skull of the attacking Zombie. In the next instant, a chorus of roars erupted outside as many Zombies turned to spot Lin Yi's figure. However, these Zombies were decayed all over; many even lacked eyeballs and seemed to sense humans through some other means.
"Hmph!" As they say, great skill breeds great courage. With his extraordinary power now, Lin Yi hardly regarded these Zombies as a threat.
In the next second, "Silver Soul" shot forth in an instant with Lin Yi's intent, illuminating two silver beams in the pitch-black darkness.
"Silver Soul" transformed into two streaks of light and swiftly approached the charging Zombies. In an instant, cold glimmers flashed as heads began to fall one after another.
The sound of falling heads echoed continuously like monotonous war drums. Within ten seconds, over two hundred Zombie heads were harvested by the two "Silver Souls," while at that moment, the remaining Zombies had only advanced a few steps toward Lin Yi!
With most of the Zombies ahead eliminated, Lin Yi no longer hid; he swiftly moved to the riverbank and tossed eight grenades as quickly as possible onto the barricade formed by those Zombies and large stones.
"Boss, it seems you've already started fighting them!" came Witerson II's voice through Lin Yi's earpiece; however, he had no time to respond at that moment.
"Boom!"
"Boom!"
The sound of explosions echoed one after another, but since most of them occurred underwater, the shockwaves and air blasts had limited destructive power on the shore. Lin Yi had retreated to the side of Witerson II, where nearly half of the Zombies had been swiftly eliminated by him, leaving only a little over two hundred. Of course, there were still more than five hundred Zombies on the opposite bank, roaring incessantly. Although they wanted to swim across, they hesitated to take action.
"Leave the rest to us!" Pachy said as he disengaged the safety on his Laser Gun, a fierce look flashing across his face. For someone who had lived on the edge of life and death for years, Bloodthirst was merely a common reaction.
Lin Yi said nothing, continuing to observe other areas. Witerson II understood Lin Yi's intent and immediately joined the hunt for Zombies.
The crimson Laser Beams ignited instantly, five beams of deadly light shot forth with a momentum that seemed capable of annihilating everything in their path, heading straight for the Zombie horde.
The sound of sizzling filled the air as heads were blown off under the direct assault of these Laser Beams, melting into dark holes. In the next moment, those Zombies with blown-off heads fell lifelessly to the ground.
"Roar!" The Zombies were stirred into a frenzy; each one seemed to be pumped up with adrenaline as they charged madly toward Witerson II.
The two sides were only a few dozen meters apart. In their madness, even though many were shot down along the way, several dozen Zombies managed to break through the laser defense line.
Lin Yi glanced over and summoned Silver Soul with a flick of his hand. In an instant, Silver Soul struck again, slicing through those Zombies that had slipped past and cutting them in half.
"Captain, you intervened again," Witerson II remarked, clearly enjoying the slaughter until Lin Yi made his move just as their bloodlust was about to boil over.
Lin Yi's expression was somewhat grim as he explained, "There are at least ten thousand Zombies in the river; they must be trying to block us. I suspect there are more than just these few hundred around here!"
As if to validate Lin Yi's words, distant roars began to echo ominously, sounding far more powerful than ordinary Zombie growls.
"Quickly throw all the grenades into the river! We have to push through no matter what!" Lin Yi's mental energy spread out as he sensed Giant Zombies charging toward them from this direction.
Seeing Lin Yi's serious demeanor, everyone dared not be careless any longer. The five of them carried fifty grenades and promptly tossed them into the river. At that moment, Lin Yi's earpiece crackled with Aoling Er's urgent voice: "Brother Lin, the situation is critical! You all need to come back!"
Lin Yi knew Aoling Er wouldn't exaggerate. As soon as they finished throwing grenades, it was as if giant firecrackers had been lit on the river surface; a cacophony of explosions erupted in unison. With communication becoming difficult at that point, Lin Yi simply pointed his flashlight at himself and made a retreat gesture with one hand.
Having worked together for a long time, they immediately understood the urgency of the situation. Lin Yi signaled for them to go ahead while he covered their retreat. None of them were overly sentimental; they knew that even if Lin Yi stayed behind, his speed would far surpass theirs.
Watching Witerson II and the others gradually disappear into the darkness, Lin Yi sprinted in the opposite direction. Just moments ago, Big Ears had informed him that at least one hundred thousand Zombies were surrounding this area. It was chilling news; once trapped, escape would be nearly impossible! However, Lin Yi knew that these hundred thousand Zombies were likely under the command of Intelligent Zombies. He hoped to locate and eliminate that commanding Zombie; doing so could at least delay their encirclement crisis.
To avoid sudden Zombie attacks, Lin Yi moved swiftly among the ruins of broken buildings. Five minutes later, he saw waves of Zombies surging like hurricanes over an ocean—one wave after another without end.
Individual strength was limited; Lin Yi hesitated for just a moment before deciding to retreat. No matter how powerful he was, facing such overwhelming force felt like an insurmountable challenge. If only his team had two thousand Special Forces-level members equipped with sufficient Laser Beam weapons, he would still have confidence in fighting back.
Nothing could be built on "ifs." Lin Yi turned and vanished into the darkness. However, he hadn't gone far when several gusts of foul wind blocked his retreat from different directions.
As Lin Yi focused his mental energy, he discovered four slender figures, each brimming with power.
"Four Abominations?" Lin Yi murmured to himself, gripping his Silver Soul tightly in both hands. In his perception, although these four Abominations were fast, they still couldn't keep up with his pace!
In the next moment, Lin Yi pushed off the ground with his legs and executed a backflip. The Zombie that had ambushed him from behind missed its strike, and before it could react, a sharp blade came crashing down from behind its neck!
A cold gleam flashed as the head of the Abomination that had attacked Lin Yi fell to the ground. Due to Lin Yi's swift maneuver, the other Zombies also missed their targets. When they saw one of their own had been killed, Lin Yi's figure had already vanished again.
With a whoosh, a falling leaf was completely shattered as the Zombie on the left, which was tracking him, was suddenly cleaved in half from its skull. Strangely enough, nothing gushed out from the corpse; all Lin Yi could sense was that the insides were tightly tangled together like old tree roots, with not a drop of blood to be found.
Lin Yi couldn't afford to dwell on that for long. In the next second, he controlled another Silver Soul to eliminate the Zombie on his right.
"Roar!" The Abomination attacking Lin Yi from the front seemed to be the strongest. After slaying the Zombie on his left, Lin Yi intended to press his advantage but found that this Zombie had managed to evade him. Witnessing its companion being annihilated in mere seconds made it let out a low growl in frustration.
"Hmph!" Lin Yi was equally displeased. His figure suddenly accelerated as he swung his blade down. The last Zombie was surprisingly quick and seemed to have anticipated his move, retreating several steps just in time. However, in its hasty retreat, it clearly hadn't accounted for unexpected developments.
Just as this Zombie stepped back a few paces, Lin Yi had already vanished from where he stood. In the next instant, he appeared behind the Zombie, wielding two blades like scissors and swiftly severing its head from its body.
