Everyone has a path beneath their feet, but there are countless choices on how to walk it. Lin Yi felt his heart stop for a moment as he fixed his gaze on the figure that leaped into the river, clutching a grenade. That figure saved more than ten people, but at the cost of their own life.
Lin Yi couldn't understand why someone would do such a thing, but he knew that person was a good person—a truly good person. This made Lin Yi even angrier, furious at Augustus's cold-bloodedness.
"Boom!" A spray of water erupted in various sizes, and the tremendous sound reverberated along the shore, causing it to tremble.
Just before the explosion occurred, Lin Yi unreservedly channeled seventy percent of his regained psychic power to move the boat in front of him. Under Lin Yi's Psychic Power, the boat surged forward like a marlin leaping out of the sea. At that moment, Lin Yi's psychic strength seemed even greater than before, miraculously propelling the boat several meters in just one second.
The splashing water struck Lin Yi, and despite his physical resilience, it was still extremely uncomfortable. Woods, though not knocked down, turned pale. Augustus fared worse; he was knocked to the ground by a powerful wave and struggled to get back up.
The boat narrowly avoided the center of the explosion; although it rocked violently from the waves, it remained intact.
Suddenly, an ear-piercing alarm blared. The people nearby who were organizing a retreat noticed something was amiss. Lin Yi steeled himself and instantly moved to Augustus's side, grabbing him and jumping into the boat. Woods had improved his agility through training and jumped in just as Lin Yi did.
Pachy, due to his profession, had piloted many types of submarines before—even if he couldn't operate high-tech nuclear-powered ones. As soon as he entered the submarine, he took on the role of pilot!
However, he froze when he saw that the control panel was filled with Italian text—none of which he recognized!
"What's wrong, Pachy?" Lin Yi asked as he entered the control room. The people outside were getting closer; they needed to leave quickly!
"I can't read!" Pachy replied with a distressed expression.
Lin Yi glanced at the screen; while some words looked familiar, he didn't understand any of them. He turned to Augustus for help, but Augustus was looking elsewhere, clearly not interested.
Just as everyone was at a loss, Lulu peeked out from behind Tony and said casually, "Let me give it a try. I used to know an Italian friend and learned some Italian."
As an Archbishop's submarine, its performance was naturally top-notch. Pachy and Lulu worked perfectly together to activate the submarine and dive down swiftly toward the exit.
Along the way, people on the shore shouted loudly, but Lin Yi and his group couldn't hear them. They passed many other submarines lined up along the side and could see the exit drawing near; everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
In just over a minute, their submarine narrowly passed through the first gate designed to block water flow. The next moment, they heard a loud crash as the gate behind them slammed shut, sealing off their escape route. This double-gate system used sensors; once it detected a submarine entering, it closed the inner gate at maximum speed.
However, as a transitional zone, there was still another gate ahead that began to open slowly. The current grew stronger as their submarine instinctively followed it toward the opening gate.
Suddenly, the monitoring equipment on the submarine indicated that what had been one-third open began to descend again!
"They realized something was wrong!" Pachy said, watching the lowering exit and looking at Lin Yi.
The safety level of the gate was unquestionable. If they couldn't leave now and got trapped in this transition area, the final outcome would definitely be disastrous!
"What should we do?" a few of them asked Consciousness.
"Float to the water surface! I have a plan!" An idea suddenly flashed in Lin Yi's mind, but whether it would work still depended on practice.
The ultra-shallow submarine ascended quickly, and within seconds, they had reached the water surface. In those few seconds, Lin Yi and Taishan donned their makeshift diving helmets and jumped into the water. They planned to rely on their strength to counteract the gate that was about to close, and at this moment, only he and Taishan had enough strength for that.
The transition area was small, and Lin Yi and his companions quickly swam beneath the gate, which had now descended to less than a meter high. The two of them discussed through the communication devices in their helmets and divided into two sides to push together.
"Ha!" They both shouted almost simultaneously as they slowly straightened from their crouched positions. The two forces struggled against each other in the water, creating violent currents that stirred up the sediment on the bottom, making the water increasingly murky.
In less than ten seconds, Lin Yi and Taishan had managed to force the descending gate back up over two meters. At this moment, Lin Yi's feet had sunk several centimeters into the ground due to exertion; if it weren't for the reinforced concrete here, they would have likely been stuck halfway into the mud.
"Lin Yi, it's not high enough for the submarine to pass!" Pachy's words shattered Lin Yi's confidence like an alarm clock breaking a dream. He had indeed worried about this issue. A mini-submarine, combined with an average person's height and equipment, needed at least two meters of clearance!
Lin Yi's mind raced; he needed a stepping stone. But what could there be in the dimly lit water bottom? In the next moment, his psychic power spread out. Since construction had just been completed not long ago, there must still be some stones around.
Sure enough, he quickly found two rectangular stones piled at the edge, about fifty centimeters high. Manipulating these stones with his psychic power was somewhat taxing, but there was no time to worry about that now.
"How high does it need to be to pass?" Lin Yi asked while controlling the stones; it was essential to clarify this matter to avoid problems.
"It can't be lower than three meters!" Pachy replied.
Lin Yi gritted his teeth and quickly moved the two stones closer to him. In the next moment, he bent at the waist, his thighs and arms bulging with effort.
Taishan received Lin Yi's signal as well. Together they pushed hard against the gate, raising it nearly a meter higher. Lin Yi then jumped onto one of the stones, preparing to continue holding up the now descending gate. Concerned that Lin Yi might struggle alone, Taishan quickly swam over. There was a slight height difference between them; Taishan was a bit taller than Lin Yi. However, he couldn't support the descending gate by himself either and had to match Lin Yi's height. This meant more weight pressed down on Lin Yi!
"Quickly get through!" Lin Yi gritted his teeth as he spat out those words; he was putting all his strength into holding up the steel gate!
The advantage of this mini-submarine was its ease of operation; it was like driving a car underwater. As soon as Lin Yi shouted, the vessel surged forward like a wild horse breaking free from its reins. The massive rush of water hit both Lin Yi and Taishan, nearly knocking them off their footing on the stone!
Once the submarine surged forward, Lin Yi and Taishan followed suit. However, before leaving, Lin Yi exerted his mental energy to move two square stones aside. Although few Zombies dared to approach this area, the consequences of one daring to venture in would be unimaginable.
Lin Yi and Taishan did not surface from the Water Surface; the Submarine continued to skim along the ground. The walls above were surely heavily fortified, and if they dared to show their heads, they would only be waiting to become targets. Although Augustus was in their hands, the enemy might not know that, and even if they did, it might not matter!
About half an hour later, the oxygen in Lin Yi and Taishan's helmets was completely depleted, prompting them to signal the Submarine to surface. At this point, the surroundings were desolate, with ruins scattered everywhere and various charred remnants of human-made objects littering the streets on both banks.
Occasionally, a lone Zombie stood on the shore, roaring at Lin Yi and the others' vessel but made no move to approach. Lin Yi understood that shooting a few Zombies would have little effect; since they posed no threat, there was no need to waste energy.
The outside world remained perilous; encountering a large group of Zombies could spell doom for them! Fortunately, this route had always been safe; as long as they weren't attacked by a massive horde of Zombies, escaping shouldn't pose much of a problem.
However, they now faced a significant issue: they had taken Augustus hostage, and returning to their original destination was out of the question. They needed to consider where their way back lay.
"Let's contact Paris and see if we can arrange for a plane to come!" Lin Yi suggested after some thought. This so-called safe passage didn't seem so secure anymore, especially after his encounter with Zhao Pei had intensified that feeling.
"No need for that; I can find a helicopter in Milan to pick us up!" Ying Sa said confidently, puffing out her chest as she scanned the group before her gaze finally landed on Lin Yi.
"A helicopter won't work; there might be Undead Birds outside. If we take off, we could easily become targets!" Lin Yi replied while drying his hair with a towel.
"Hmph! Lin, you always underestimate me. Do you think I don't know about Undead Birds? If I say we can use this helicopter, then we can!" Ying Sa pouted defiantly, her angry demeanor somehow evoking a sense of affection from those around her.
