Lin Yi suddenly recalled the question posed by a member of the National Security Bureau last year: what would he do if his good brother committed a heinous crime? He remembered responding with righteous indignation at the time, but now he found himself lacking the fury he had imagined. Perhaps he was a selfish person; when it came to his few brothers and friends, he didn’t want to confront them.
“Leave this place and stop doing bad things!” Lin Yi sighed, admitting to himself that he was a weak person. Faced with difficult decisions, he could only evade them.
Zhao Pei seemed momentarily stunned before suddenly letting out a long howl. His hoarse voice grated like sand scraping against metal, unbearable to hear.
“Bad things? Pray tell, what bad things have I done?” Zhao Pei’s frail body began to tremble, his emotions running high.
“Isn’t eating people a bad thing? It’s simply monstrous!” Lin Yi thought Zhao Pei was shameless for not even acknowledging his actions.
“Do you apologize for your food after every meal?” Zhao Pei’s voice turned icy, filled with an endless chill.
“How could I…”
“Then on what grounds do you accuse me of wrongdoing? I’m merely trying to survive; I need food! Is it because I consume your kind as sustenance, or are you afraid that one day I might eat you?” Zhao Pei interrupted Lin Yi, his tone growing increasingly deranged.
“Fine, food! We’re just your food; do you have any humanity left?” Lin Yi drew Silver Soul, ready to fight at any moment.
Zhao Pei yanked off the rag covering his head, revealing a starry expanse. Lin Yi saw a nearly withered skull. The bald top was marred by deep wrinkles. If one had to describe it, Zhao Pei’s head resembled a millennia-old corpse buried in the desert.
“Look at me—am I still human? Can you allow someone like me into human society?” Zhao Pei pointed at his face, his voice laced with rage.
Lin Yi paused. If such a “person” were to enter human society, few would likely accept him. Zhao Pei was indeed no longer human; he was merely a monster that fed on humans.
“How did you become like this?” Lin Yi didn’t dwell on whether Zhao Pei was human anymore; to truly resolve this crisis, he needed to find its source.
“I was bitten by another Zombie; I can’t remember clearly. By the time I gained Consciousness, I was already in Ethiopia,” Zhao Pei spoke in a daze. As an intelligent being—even if just a Zombie—he felt pain for not having a past.
Lin Yi didn’t regard Zhao Pei as just a Zombie; at least now he was normal and hadn’t eaten anyone, communicating like an ordinary person.
"Then why have you been attacking human cities?" Lin Yi felt that even if Zhao Pei wanted to eat humans, there was no need for large-scale assaults on human settlements.
"Your question is quite ridiculous. If I don't attack human cities, what will I eat? What will my kind eat? I have a responsibility and an obligation to fight for the survival of my kind!" Zhao Pei looked at Lin Yi, emphasizing each word, "Just like you feel you have an obligation to fight for your own kind!"
Lin Yi's heart sank. Perhaps he was truly mistaken; they were not of the same kind to begin with, so how could he discuss kinship with Zhao Pei?
"Do you want to become human again?" Lin Yi asked, trying his luck.
Zhao Pei seemed taken aback for a moment, but then he replied with a mocking tone, "I don't want to go back to being that weak experiment subject. There’s nothing wrong with being powerful; in fact, this power can grant me immortality!"
Immortality? Could this be the root of the problem? Lin Yi's heart suddenly raced. He felt he had grasped the source of the contradiction, but it still seemed off. This was merely an accident, or perhaps it was just Zhao Pei's one-sided desire.
"You can’t die?" Lin Yi asked again, still uneasy. The secret of immortality was incredibly enticing to anyone.
"What's wrong? Do you want me to take a bite out of you so we can share immortality?" Zhao Pei became somewhat deranged; he still retained some humanity and naturally yearned for immortality.
Lin Yi felt a chill run down his spine. He had considered the idea of immortality before, but he had never truly pondered whether he could achieve it. However, if he could extract some secrets from Zhao Pei, it might be more meaningful.
"I’ve been thinking about where the Zombie Virus originated from. Is this a conspiracy or an accident? I believe many people are pondering this question, yet we are all overwhelmed by endless Zombies," Lin Yi seemed to be talking to himself, but it also felt like he was addressing Zhao Pei.
"I know nothing. The only thing I do know is that there are definitely many powerful beings in this world like the Zombies you speak of! So don’t think that killing me will put your mind at ease. As long as there are Zombies in this world, you will always live in fear!"
Lin Yi smiled wryly; he had naturally considered this possibility, which was why he wanted to find the source of the Zombie Virus. Otherwise, when would this nightmare ever end?
Suddenly, Zhao Pei twisted his body and transformed into a blur as he dashed off in a certain direction. In the next moment, a sharp screech pierced Lin Yi's ears, as if thousands of arrows were about to shoot through the air toward him.
With a rush, Lin Yi unleashed his mental energy to its fullest extent, but sensed nothing. However, in the next second, his face turned pale. In his perception, a massive object was hurtling toward him. If he remembered correctly, it looked just like a missile!
In no more than ten seconds, the missile would turn the ground where Lin Yi stood into scorched earth!
Almost at the moment Lin Yi sensed the missile, all his strength surged into his legs. He shot forward like a cannonball, transforming into a streak of fire racing toward the city wall. Every surface he pushed off from was splattered with mud.
At that moment, Lin Yi's heart was filled with resentment. Although he had no idea how Augustus had pinpointed his direction, the thought of risking everything for them only to become a pawn in their hands ignited his anger.
In the blink of an eye, Lin Yi had already covered several hundred meters. But the next moment, he nearly fell to the ground in shock; his senses detected no less than ten missiles flying toward the spot he had just vacated. Lin Yi didn't know the blast radius of these missiles, but if he didn't run far enough, he could easily end up as a pile of scorched earth.
Five seconds later, Lin Yi had already sprinted two kilometers away. At this point, he felt a painful sensation throughout his body as if it were about to fall apart. He wasn't an invincible iron man; such intense running was a heavy burden on him.
Faced with life and death, as long as he still drew breath, he wouldn't give up. Gritting his teeth, Lin Yi continued running toward the city wall. No matter what happened, at least the missiles wouldn't hit the wall itself.
In ten seconds, despite his best efforts, Lin Yi barely managed to reach four kilometers.
“Boom!” The first explosion rang out just as Lin Yi paused to catch his breath, followed closely by another explosion.
The first blast was still four kilometers away, while the second seemed alarmingly close. Lin Yi jumped in surprise; this was completely unexpected!
Even though his legs felt as if they were filled with lead, Lin Yi dared not relax for a moment. However, at this rate, he couldn't maintain his speed; sweat poured down his forehead in desperation.
“Boom!” Another loud explosion echoed nearby, and a scorching shockwave swept toward him like a roaring tsunami. The heat nearly knocked Lin Yi off his feet.
He had to push through! Clenching his teeth, Lin Yi unleashed all his psychic power without holding back. In that instant, every ounce of psychic energy focused on his legs. He knew that whether he could propel himself forward depended entirely on this power!
“Ah—” With a long howl, Lin Yi suddenly activated his psychic power in his legs. The next moment, something miraculous happened: it felt as if boosters had been installed on his legs, propelling him forward at an incredible speed. While it wasn't as fast as when he ran at full strength, it was significantly better than normal.
Missiles rained down from the sky like they were free, each one exploding around Lin Yi with deafening blasts.
He was now close to the city wall. Gritting his teeth, he continued running until he pressed himself against the wall's edge. At that moment, a missile exploded less than a hundred meters away!
A hurricane-like shockwave accompanied by countless fragments surged toward him. Instinctively, Lin Yi threw himself to the ground. Even so, debris struck him relentlessly, making loud thudding sounds against his body.
After about ten seconds, the falling debris had mostly settled. Lin Yi randomly began calling out to Big Ears, informing them that he was back, but his calls sank into silence, with no response from the other side.
A sense of foreboding washed over Lin Yi. Although his body had not fully recovered, climbing a wall was still within his capabilities.
One minute later, the wall that should have taken only a few seconds to scale was finally conquered by Lin Yi. However, before he could take any action, the sound of a gun being cocked suddenly echoed in his ears!
"Put your hands up!" A commanding voice rang out around Lin Yi, and the darkness was quickly illuminated by lights. A group of weary-looking soldiers was cautiously watching him.
"Do you really think this poses a threat to me?" Lin Yi suppressed the intense agitation within him and asked coldly.
"Your companions are in my hands!" Augustus's voice came through, laced with a hint of cold-bloodedness.
"What have you done to them?" Lin Yi's teeth ground together audibly; if not for his concern for his teammates' safety, he would have wiped out the group before him without hesitation.
"Nothing much; they were just captured for not cooperating with my plans. But Captain Lin, I wonder what you have gained?" Augustus's voice took on a slightly shrill tone, which felt unusual.
Although Lin Yi had no idea what had transpired, stabilizing Augustus was now of utmost importance. Ordinary words wouldn't sway him, so he had to resort to that secret.
"The secret of immortality!"
