Augustus believed he was in the right, even if it meant sacrificing the interests of some individuals. He was considering the greater good for the majority, so he felt no psychological pressure.
This situation was somewhat difficult to handle, and it could even lead to a one-way trip. However, he saw hope in Lin Yi; this was his only hope, so he had to ensure that Lin Yi stayed, even if his methods were not particularly sophisticated.
"The attacks from the Undead Creatures are very systematic, so we deduce that there must be Intelligent Zombies operating nearby. But you should also know that these creatures are incredibly cunning, comparable to the most devious of people. We have been trying hard to locate the Intelligent Zombie responsible for orchestrating these attacks, but unfortunately, most of our drones have gone missing without a trace. Even with Satellite surveillance, aside from countless Zombies, we cannot identify which one is the Intelligent Zombie," Augustus turned around, his emotions somewhat agitated. He desperately wanted to resolve the crisis, but the reality was that they were constantly in danger.
"So what? Are we supposed to run around aimlessly?" Lin Yi scoffed a few times, feeling as if he was facing an unavoidable trap.
"Our efforts have not been in vain; currently, two locations seem most suspicious. One is about five kilometers northwest of the city entrance along the Tiber River, and the other is a town fifteen kilometers outside South Side. These two locations account for the highest number of lost drones, making up one-third of the total," Augustus continued.
"Then why not conduct artillery coverage?" Pachy nearly questioned him.
"What's strange is that every time a drone disappears, we immediately cover its last known location with artillery fire. However, when we send another drone for verification later, it still gets shot down. This has happened repeatedly!" Augustus's expression was somewhat despondent; this sense of helplessness would be hard for anyone to endure.
Hearing the Archbishop's words, Lin Yi suddenly recalled a figure; under this figure, even the Spear of God seemed insignificant.
"So you want us to go out and die? To take a gamble with human lives?" Ying Sa twirled her Laser Gun in her hand, giving off an ominous vibe.
"In this situation, a large-scale exit would only drown us in an endless tide of Zombies. Therefore, I hope for a more direct approach!" Augustus said this while looking at Lin Yi; the meaning behind his words was clear.
"What’s in it for us?" Lin Yi asked without hesitation.
"You can go out!" Augustus replied.
"That's not enough!" Lin Yi felt that his opponent was indeed cunning and unwilling to pay up after buying him.
"Alright, Captain Lin is so straightforward; I won't beat around the bush. Once this is accomplished, I will certainly provide you with satisfactory rewards!" Augustus smiled slyly; as long as Lin Yi agreed, what could be wrong?
...
Three hours later, Lin Yi had gathered all the information and equipped himself with top-notch gear. Although he was alone, he would receive early warning support regarding any situation within a three-kilometer radius around him. Coupled with his terrifying combat prowess, he would essentially be in an invulnerable position. Of course, nothing is absolute; if someone or any Corrupted Creatures could overpower him, he would find himself in dire straits.
After calming the unease among the group, Lin Yi slid down from the northern wall, tethered by a zip line. Most of the Oceanic Undead were concentrated on the western front, while the northern side was still populated by humans infected with the Zombie Virus.
The night was cool and tranquil, as if no living creature existed nearby. If it weren't for the occasional crackling of static from his radio, Lin Yi might have thought he had entered an endless void of space.
Outside the city walls, he could barely make out some human skeletons and a scorched earth left in the wake of a raging fire. The remnants of buildings stood in ruins, alongside abandoned, charred vehicles and appliances.
Lin Yi casually glanced around before quickly donning his night vision goggles and moving through the boundless darkness.
From a distance, he could see a shadow flickering intermittently; each flash covered nearly a hundred meters. Within moments, Lin Yi vanished from sight.
As he advanced about a kilometer, the sounds of moaning corpses began to rise around him. The growls echoed like signals from wolves hunting across a vast prairie.
Lin Yi had no time to dwell on it; his mission lay five kilometers ahead. The holographic display on his arm indicated that there were forty-five Zombies wandering within a hundred-meter radius, clearly unaware of Lin Yi's presence.
"This thing is quite useful; I should get one for myself!" Lin Yi thought as he observed the red dots on the display moving closer or further away. They often needed to exterminate Zombies to earn Contribution Points for survival, and having this device would significantly increase their chances.
Thirty seconds later, Lin Yi had covered two kilometers, not even at full speed. However, the moans around him grew increasingly dense, and he could even see several Zombies wandering nearby.
Deciding to press on, Lin Yi knew that taking down these hundred Zombies wouldn't take much time.
In the next moment, he tightened his thigh muscles, preparing to sprint toward his destination. Suddenly, those previously mindless Zombies let out long howls and turned their attention directly toward Lin Yi!
Yes, Lin Yi felt as if they were watching him! At that moment, it seemed as if the Zombies had received some sort of command and began to converge toward him.
"Beep beep beep!" The alarm on Lin Yi's wrist went off, and the red dots on the display multiplied rapidly, drawing closer!
"Captain, you need to get out of there quickly; more Zombies are closing in!" Ero's voice crackled in Lin Yi's ear. To counteract any unreliability from the alarm system, Lin Yi had specifically instructed Big Ears and Ero to keep alert for any sounds around him.
"Got it! Which direction is weakest?" Lin Yi didn't want to get trapped, even if these ordinary Zombies were relatively weak!
"Nine o'clock! There are only about ten Zombies!" Big Ears replied. However, relying solely on sound made it difficult for him to accurately gauge the exact number of Zombies!
"Alright!" Lin Yi exclaimed, transforming into a shooting star as he dashed toward the direction indicated by Big Ears.
With a sharp sound, the Silver Soul on Lin Yi's back shot forward like a beam of cold light the moment he moved.
Lin Yi's mental energy followed in a straight line, trailing closely behind the Silver Soul. In the blink of an eye, he covered the distance of several dozen meters.
"Swish!" The Silver Soul seemed to have a mind of its own, heading straight for the Zombies' heads. In an instant, four Zombies had their heads severed.
In the next moment, Lin Yi arrived on the scene, only to be confronted by two more Zombies lunging at him from either side.
With a surge of power in his hands, Lin Yi grasped the Silver Soul that had just flown out and swung it with precision. The necks of the two Zombies instantly bore fine lines.
The two Zombies staggered forward a few steps before their heads fell to the ground. Just as they stumbled, Lin Yi struck again, and two more Zombie heads rolled away.
The remaining four Zombies approached him in an encircling attack formation, but this time Lin Yi did not close in.
"Whoosh!" The air split with two explosive sounds as the Silver Soul transformed into two streaks of light, charging toward the attacking Zombies.
The sounds of bones clashing with blades echoed simultaneously as four decayed heads were sent flying into the air.
A faint smile of relief appeared on Lin Yi's lips as he continued moving without pause, leaping up to retrieve both Silver Souls and sheathing them back into their scabbards.
"Not good! Five massive footsteps are approaching; it must be Giant Zombies!" Just as Lin Yi broke through this weakest line of defense, Big Ears' urgent voice rang in his ears.
With a loud crash, Lin Yi barely dodged a shadow that suddenly descended from the darkness—a thick iron rod.
He had just used all his mental energy to control the Silver Soul to slay the Zombies and had complete faith in Big Ears' abilities. However, just as he retracted the Silver Soul and released his Psychic Power, he felt a fierce gust of wind rush toward him, nearly crushing his skull!
"I see it!" Lin Yi replied to Big Ears before focusing entirely on the situation.
Five Giant Zombies would normally not concern him, but now he was going in alone with a single blade. Any unexpected turn of events could lead to an irreparable crisis!
The first Zombie to attack Lin Yi swung its Iron Rod down, but before it could retract the weapon, Lin Yi, having narrowly avoided a fatal blow, took control of Silver Soul and flew forward. In a flash of cold light, the Giant Zombie's head fell to the ground.
"Roar!" "Roar!" Seeing their companion defeated, four Giant Zombies charged toward Lin Yi in unison.
"Come at me!" With his fighting spirit ignited, Lin Yi leaped into action without hesitation.
Clang! Clang! Clang! The Iron Rod in the Zombie's hand clashed against Silver Soul, sending sparks flying. However, the blade in Lin Yi's hand was forged from a special alloy, far superior to the ordinary Iron Rod wielded by the Zombie. In their first exchange, a large chunk of the Iron Rod was sheared off by Silver Soul.
In the next moment, Lin Yi used the momentum to leap onto the heads of two Zombies. He thrust Silver Soul directly toward their rotting skulls.
With a swift motion, Lin Yi twisted the blade in his hands, creating two massive gashes on top of the Zombies' heads, even obliterating their brain covers.
Suddenly, two dark figures rushed toward Lin Yi with a howling sound. Yet, he clapped his hands on the hilts of the blades embedded in the Zombies' heads and used that force to roll into the air.
Thud! Lin Yi landed behind the last two Giant Zombies. Under his command, both Silver Souls shot out instantly.
The two Giant Zombies missed their targets and before they could react, Silver Soul circled around their necks.
The enormous skulls rolled on the ground as all five Giant Zombies collapsed!
