The stench hit Lin Yi like a physical force, invading his nostrils and overwhelming him with a wave of nausea that threatened to spill over.
He fought back the tears welling in his eyes and swung his blade directly at the approaching tentacle.
With a sharp "slice," the tentacle was cleaved in two by Lin Yi's strike. In the next moment, he twisted his wrist, severing the part of the tentacle that had reached the city wall.
The Giant Squid, having failed twice, bizarrely chose to abandon its attack. Lin Yi knew that these Corpseification Sea Beasts typically fought to the death.
In a flash, Lin Yi moved, appearing at the edge of the wall. It was then that he noticed a massive cephalopod clinging to the wall—it was indeed the Giant Squid. Three of its tentacles were firmly gripping the wall while the remaining seven flailed desperately around it.
Having just severed two of its tentacles, the remaining half flailed comically. However, it could only slap against the wall ineffectively, posing no real threat to those atop it.
But not everyone possessed Lin Yi's terrifying combat prowess; others faced significant danger from the Giant Squid. Nearby, a group of five worked together to fend off one of its tentacles. Two members fired assault rifles at it relentlessly, while another two wielded blades over a meter long, hacking at the incoming appendage. The last member held a solid-fuel torch in one hand and a bucket of liquid in the other, taking sips before spraying it onto the Giant Squid's tentacle. Lin Yi's nostrils flared as he recognized the smell of gasoline—an increasingly rare sight these days.
Clearly, this group had coordinated their efforts before; they first used bullets to slow down the tentacle's advance and then followed up with slashing attacks and fire. While their strategy wasn't particularly powerful, if they could hold out for a while longer until heavier firepower arrived to obliterate the Giant Squid's head, this Corpseification creature would lose its fighting capability.
Lin Yi stood at the edge of the wall and surveyed the chaos outside. Various Sea Beasts crawled densely across the ground, all moving inexorably forward.
Humans had employed every means available to inflict damage. Although they were now standing atop Corpseification marine creatures below, sporadic explosions and bursts of flames told Lin Yi that this battle was far from simple.
The fight was escalating into a heated frenzy; although Lin Yi had begun to shine in combat, those around him were already beyond caution.
Suddenly, Lin Yi noticed that one group to his right had faltered when one member paused to reload. The tentacle surged forward with an ordinary person's speed that would have been impossible to react to in time. If it struck true, one of them would surely be knocked off the wall.
With a sharp sound, Lin Yi moved his blade casually; Silver Soul met that rushing tentacle in an instant.
The group members heard what sounded like a Dragon's Roar beside them and saw a flash of cold light as the rushing shadow was cut cleanly in half.
With a loud "thud," a massive tentacle crashed down onto the city wall, sending dust flying everywhere.
Lin Yi had drawn his blade too hastily; although he had managed to sever part of the tentacle, a long section still posed a threat to those on the wall.
"I'll take care of this!" Just as Lin Yi leaped forward, a deep voice echoed in his ear. He turned to see the tall and lean figure of Taishan.
Taishan's previous performance on Corsica was nothing short of remarkable; his strength alone could nearly shake a Giant Squid.
The severed tentacle, still thrashing about, suddenly drew Taishan's attention. With a fierce roar, his Combat Suit inflated dramatically, making him appear like an oversized balloon in an instant.
"Ha!" With a shout that resonated like war drums, Taishan leaped onto the wall and seized the half-tentacle that was slamming down towards him.
"Rise!" His voice boomed with power, veins bulging on his forehead as his already enlarged arm swelled even further, muscles rippling with intensity.
The severed tentacle straightened out instantly, and what had been tightly coiled around the wall began to pull away from its surface.
"Roar—" The heavily wounded Giant Squid let out a low growl that sounded almost like a mournful cry.
But Taishan paid no mind to its lament. With a powerful stomp of his massive thigh, the ground beneath him buckled slightly. In the next moment, he exerted all his strength, and the Giant Squid could no longer maintain its grip; Taishan yanked it directly off the wall.
"Hoo hoo!" The Giant Squid was not about to give up easily; several other tentacles abandoned their previous targets and lunged at Taishan with menacing intent.
"Dare to harm my brother! Kill!" Witerson II and the others saw Taishan in peril and raised their Laser Guns, opening fire.
Brilliant beams of laser light shot forth in an instant. The approaching tentacles met the searing Laser Beams and disintegrated like winter snow touching a hot iron, leaving behind charred blackened remnants.
The hissing sound filled the air, and before the tentacles could reach Taishan, they were already scorched to pieces by dozens of rapid-fire Laser Beams.
Lin Yi was not idle either; he unleashed all his mental energy, using two Silver Souls to completely sever the remaining limbs.
In just a minute, the originally arrogant Giant Squid had lost seven of its tentacles.
Having already endured numerous bullets, the Giant Squid was now extremely weakened. Aside from three tentacles that held its position, the remaining six, which were mostly severed, flailed weakly. The last relatively intact tentacle was tightly gripped by Taishan.
In the next moment, the wobbling Giant Squid was forcibly pulled up by Taishan. Those standing on the wall felt a massive shadow soar into the air, followed by a barrage of intense Laser Beams firing at the black figure suspended in mid-air.
The Giant Squid, thrown into the air by Taishan, was instantly reduced to a pile of minced meat by the ensuing heavy fire. The foul-smelling, dark meat splattered down, covering a radius of a hundred meters with flesh debris.
Previously, the Giant Squid had been clinging tightly to the wall. The defense personnel had been hesitant to unleash full attacks for fear of damaging the wall. However, with Taishan's immense strength now in play, the Giant Squid's reliance vanished in an instant, leaving only remnants after being bombarded by cannon fire.
Before Lin Yi and the others could cheer, a sudden commotion erupted from not far away on the wall. Following the sound, Lin Yi and his companions felt their scalps tingle in alarm.
They saw that a wall was densely covered with ocean creatures as large as adult heads. They resembled helmets stuck to the ground, but bizarrely, beneath these helmets were countless tentacle-like appendages. It was these small tentacles that supported these helmet-like ocean creatures as they desperately crawled toward the wall.
"Quick! Don't let those things get close!" A voice filled with extreme fear shouted from the crowd.
In the next moment, all firepower concentrated on the wall covered with Corpseification ocean creatures. They even disregarded whether this would damage the wall. Clearly, they feared more the imminent attack from these Undead Creatures than any potential future issues caused by wall damage!
However, there were simply too many Undead Creatures. Even with everyone firing desperately, it was difficult to fend off the endless swarm of Undead Creatures that surged like locusts.
"Use oil attacks!" After an initial panic, someone quickly proposed a solution; it was evident they were not facing this situation for the first time.
Soon, dozens of pairs of people emerged from the tents on the city wall, carrying barrels of gasoline, a fuel typically used by older cars. In Rome, as an international metropolis, those cars had long been phased out, yet a considerable amount of automotive fuel was still stored.
The barrels of gasoline were poured down at the fastest speed possible, and a pungent odor spread across the entire wall, carried by the faint sea breeze from afar.
After being drenched in gasoline, the Undead Creatures seemed even more agitated. Their numerous tentacles scraped against the wall, producing a sound reminiscent of countless caterpillars writhing incessantly, driving one to madness.
"Whoosh!" As dozens of barrels were emptied, several people tossed down torches. Instantly, a Fire Sea erupted on the wall, engulfing the Corpse Sea Beasts within its vast flames.
Lin Yi noticed that the expressions of those around him remained grave, indicating that the situation was not as simple as he had imagined.
Sure enough, those Undead Creatures that he thought would be burned to death charged out of the Fire Sea as if nothing had happened.
"Rat-a-tat-tat!" The sound of the Heavy Machine Gun continued to ring out, tearing apart those who had just emerged from the Fire Sea under a torrential barrage of bullets.
Soon, more flaming Undead Creatures rushed out from the Fire Sea. The firepower that had previously swept through was gradually losing its effectiveness.
The thirty-meter-high wall was not particularly tall; those Corpseification marine creatures crawled quickly and almost in the blink of an eye reached a point just a few meters away from the top of the wall.
Lin Yi gestured for everyone to assist in dealing with the situation, but he felt little confidence in his heart.
While there were indeed many ordinary Zombies, they could still be effectively defended against with sufficient firepower. However, these Corpseification marine creatures were numerous and small; ordinary bullets posed little threat to them.
