Ying Sa commanded her Round Table Knight Mercenary Corps and Invincible Mercenary Corps to rush toward the defense zone. The spacious Bulletproof Transport Vehicle felt cramped due to the influx of refugees from Vernon. Ying Sa was worried; if they suddenly encountered a Zombie attack, they would be unable to mount an effective resistance. Fortunately, the military had provided surveillance support and would offer firepower assistance in special circumstances.
What troubled Ying Sa the most was that Lone Wolf, the overall leader of this operation, had chosen to stay behind as their rear guard, which was a dangerous decision. Although Ying Sa was young, she understood that this world was not as simple as it seemed. Since the rescue began, she had been unable to find any trace of Lin Yi, and Lone Wolf's responses regarding this issue were vague.
"Boss, there are Zombies approaching!" A Black-Clad Mercenary monitoring the situation spoke in a low voice, trying to avoid causing panic among the crowded occupants of Ying Sa's command vehicle.
"Can we handle them?" Ying Sa's expression darkened; she felt the weight of her responsibilities.
The Black-Clad Mercenary furrowed his brow as he analyzed the surveillance footage rapidly. After about ten seconds, he looked up and said, "Approximately five thousand Zombies. If we weren't bringing these people along, our strength would be sufficient, but protecting them complicates things significantly!"
Ying Sa instinctively lifted her head and met Old John's gaze.
"I'm old, but I'm still a man; fighting is something us men should do!" Old John's voice boomed, ensuring everyone in the vehicle heard him.
Ying Sa forced a smile. Although she found his machismo off-putting, she recognized it as Old John's way of expressing goodwill, indicating that they wouldn't be a burden.
"Prepare for battle!" Lin Yi commanded with a wave of his hand.
...
Akin's eyes widened. Although the intelligent Bullet Head didn't require him to determine direction, he instinctively wanted to observe with his own eyes.
The continuous roars of the undead echoed around them, and the ground began to tremble violently. They weren't sure how many Zombies were in that horde, but judging by the sound alone, it was at least over ten thousand. Meanwhile, their Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps only numbered around twenty!
Lin Yi's face grew increasingly pale; he had few cards left to play—if any at all. The current crisis far exceeded his capabilities; no matter how he calculated, it seemed like they were facing a dead end ahead.
"Full speed ahead!" Lin Yi could only hope to break through the encirclement of Zombies with speed; after all, it was the most promising method.
Akin felt immense pressure, but there was nothing he could do. Fortunately, there weren't many people in the Bullet Head they were riding, allowing the vehicle to maintain its maximum speed.
The Bulletproof Transport Vehicle, which had been running smoothly, began to tremble as Akin pushed the speed to its limit, giving off a sense that it might fall apart at any moment. However, this feeling didn't last long; ahead of them, and even on both sides, they were surrounded by Zombies!
"Concentrate fire to clear a path!" Lin Yi's eyes were fixed on the dim shapes illuminated by the headlights; those Zombies moved quickly, as if fueled by adrenaline, lunging toward the vehicle.
Lin Yi and Douglas coordinated perfectly, instantly pinpointing the location of the Giant Zombie. They were positioned in the middle of the horde and not at the front lines.
There was still a glimmer of hope as the Bullet Head surged forward like a bullet. The two mounted 0 Artillery cannons roared in fury, their sonic booms tearing through the air as red and yellow shells struck the Zombies. The rotten flesh met the sharpest blades, instantly shredded into pieces. The foul-smelling entrails and blackened bones were reduced to mere fragments by the searing metal projectiles.
Flesh and blood were ultimately just flesh and blood; in front of the coldest metal machines, no matter how fearless they were, it proved futile. The Zombies surged forward like moths drawn to a flame, wave after wave crashing against the Bulletproof Transport Vehicle.
Soon, within sight, there was nothing but Zombies and their bloodied remains. The already decayed bits of flesh splattered against the windows, dark bloodstains soaking every reachable surface as the vehicle sped along. It was as if the entire vehicle was ensnared by a dense network of veins, sending chills down one’s spine.
Thud! Thud! Thud! A series of impacts echoed around the vehicle as those Zombies that had already lunged completely surrounded it. Even though the vehicle accelerated desperately, it could not withstand the relentless pressure from the Zombies.
The speed was decreasing rapidly; even with Bullet Head firing at full capacity like a meat grinder, the surrounding Zombies formed an impenetrable wall of corpses. Once the entire vehicle fell into this Zombie Sea, it would mean they had become food for the undead.
At this moment, Lin Yi's heart was filled with rage. Someone must have tampered with this vehicle; otherwise, how could they have been surrounded by Zombies after only a few minutes behind other vehicles in their convoy?
Suddenly, a hollow knock echoed in everyone's ears, striking deep within their hearts and causing them to tremble violently.
The ammunition for the Vehicle-mounted Cannon had run out, and their only external firepower was now ineffective.
"Throw grenades to the left and right! Clear the way with the Laser Gun!" Lin Yi commanded swiftly. If he were alone, he would be confident in escaping, but he was not alone now.
Brilliant lasers and the booming sound of Cannon Fire intertwined, forming a merciless defensive barrier. Yet, those Zombies were even more ruthless, or perhaps they were inherently devoid of mercy. Their relentless charge could not be halted by even the fiercest attacks.
Lin Yi's mental energy swept through the cabin again and again, but he still found no reason for concern. Was he overthinking it? Lin Yi couldn't help but frown; after days of constant movement, perhaps he was just being overly suspicious. He hoped things wouldn't develop in such a dire direction.
"A Giant Zombie is coming!" Douglas suddenly changed his expression. His mental energy was still stronger than Lin Yi's.
The cabin fell into a dead silence. If these ordinary Zombies affected their speed, then the Giant Zombie posed a threat to their lives!
"How many are there?" Lin Yi quickly calculated in his mind; he had to take responsibility for his team.
"About forty, coming in formation!" Douglas's voice trembled slightly. They all understood what forty Giant Zombies meant.
"Alright, you all need to break through the encirclement as quickly as possible. Once you're within range of military artillery, contact them for fire support!" Lin Yi made a firm decision and headed up to the upper level of the Transport Vehicle.
"Captain!"
"Boss!"
"Lin Yi!"
Everyone shouted "Consciousness" in unison, knowing what Lin Yi intended to do, or at least understanding his thoughts at that moment.
"Forty Giant Zombies. If they really charge over, the casualties will be beyond what I can bear. But if I go out alone, it won't be a problem. Even if I can't wipe them out, I can still hold them off!"
Without waiting for anyone's reaction, Lin Yi dashed up to the second floor. There were windows on the second floor, allowing him to jump out directly.
Time was running short. Lin Yi opened the window and leaped out.
"Fight your way out!" Even the usually stoic Pachy couldn't help but shout, his long-suppressed emotions spilling over.
Big-Eared Man and Brice wore expressions of tension, never expecting the situation to become so dire. They could be facing disaster at any moment. Big-Eared Man's eyes flickered with barely contained anger, though he fought hard to suppress it.
The cold wind outside rushed into Lin Yi's neck, causing him to shiver involuntarily. The endless roar sounded like a chorus of wolves howling, each cry striking deep into his heart. Lin Yi paused for less than a second before transforming into a blur.
A mass of Zombie heads appeared beneath Lin Yi's feet. He merely tapped lightly, like a dragonfly skimming water, and then he was off, racing away. The modified Laser Cannon in his hand began firing at a nearby Giant Zombie; with his immense strength, he could easily control the weapon.
A searing beam shot through the upper body of one Zombie, and in the next moment, a massive hole was burned through its torso, splitting it in half.
This was just the beginning. As Lin Yi advanced while targeting Zombie heads, he continued shooting. The gathering of Giant Zombies was a mistake in itself, making them easy targets for Lin Yi to eliminate one by one.
"Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!"
Lin Yi's figure flickered continuously as beams of deadly light shot from the Laser Cannon in his hands again and again.
The Giant Zombies began to scatter after losing seven or eight of their number in quick succession. They reacted to Lin Yi's attacks by dodging as quickly as possible.
A thunderous roar echoed as one of the Zombies closed in.
With a sharp sound, Silver Soul was drawn, and Lin Yi used his perception to swiftly strike down the approaching foe. He also held the Laser Cannon with both hands, firing continuously at the oncoming Zombie.
Out of the forty Zombies, ten fell victim to Lin Yi's thunderous assault in an instant.
However, good fortune would not last forever. The roars surrounding Lin Yi grew louder. The Zombies beneath him began to pull away, making it difficult for him to find a place to land. If he were to fall into the encirclement of the Zombies, escaping would come at a great cost.
Although Silver Soul was controlled by his mental energy and moved quickly, it still lacked in power. While Lin Yi's head didn't throb as painfully as it did during previous battles, he still felt a significant burden.
After killing one Zombie, Lin Yi suddenly turned around.
With a snap, he tightened his grip on Silver Soul and swung the blade at the Giant Zombie that was raising its iron rod to strike.
A piercing metallic clash rang out as the Giant Zombie's Iron Rod broke in response. But in the next moment, Silver Soul continued its momentum and cleaved directly toward the Zombie's head.
Without the Iron Rod as a weapon, the Giant Zombie appeared to Lin Yi as nothing more than a large mass of flesh. In the next second, Silver Soul sliced through the Zombie's brain, and the thirteenth Zombie fell to the ground!
