The remaining people were those who had previously been unwilling to leave, and naturally, there weren't many of them—only about five or six thousand. They had been in a state of readiness, so when Old John called for them, they quickly gathered at the city gate. As Lin Yi descended, he saw over five thousand individuals of all ages, their faces etched with exhaustion, as if they could fall asleep at any moment.
The threat of zombies was merely an instinctive resistance for them now; they would collapse when they could no longer hold on. The potential of life is not infinite, and when pushed to the limit, it can become incredibly fragile.
Old John was rapidly counting heads; he needed to evacuate everyone in the shortest time possible. Lone Wolf occasionally glanced at his watch or used a radio to communicate with the outside world. Even someone as cold-blooded as him could not maintain absolute calm under such extreme threat.
"Five thousand seven hundred and thirteen!" Old John quickly confirmed the number with the help of a few others. Afterward, they continued to verify the situation but discovered that one person was still missing!
"Who are we missing?" Old John shouted. At this moment, the zombies were closing in relentlessly, and even someone as composed as him felt a surge of uncontainable anger.
"Emma!" a middle-aged woman whispered.
"Everyone else follow Mr. Lone Wolf to retreat; I will go find her!" Old John said as he picked up a long gun and headed toward where everyone had originally rested.
Lin Yi felt a tug in his heart and quickly stepped forward to Old John. "Let me handle this; these thousands of people still need you to manage them!" He pointed at the Vernons, who were looking at him with various expressions. Clearly, Old John was their pillar of support; they could not afford to lose him, even for a moment.
Old John hesitated for just a second before patting Lin Yi's shoulder and turning back to the group. Everyone began to retreat quickly and orderly as the distant roars of zombies grew clearer.
The inner city surrounded by walls had long fallen into decay. Since the onset of the Zombie Crisis, those who could leave had already done so, taking whatever they could carry. Lin Yi wondered what those who remained were holding onto for three years; the dilapidated urban area didn't even have a decent building left. All construction materials had been stripped away to fortify the Defensive City walls, leaving only some city signs behind. They could only keep these signs as perhaps a symbol of what they needed to protect.
Lin Yi took a few steps forward; the urban area was already shrouded in darkness. However, he didn't need light; through his mental perception, he could clearly understand every blade of grass and tree within several dozen meters around him. Apart from wild grass and discarded trash, he saw nothing else. He slowly distanced himself from the crowd but still found no trace of Emma. A chill crept over him; although he didn't require light, the surrounding darkness exuded a coldness that pierced like fine needles into his body.
This place was almost a dead city; occasionally, wild cats with glowing green eyes would silently slip away without making a sound, like an omnipresent conspiracy. Lin Yi withdrew Silver Soul from his Consciousness; he needed some sense of security. Although this feeling seemed ridiculous, he truly needed it.
"Hey, hero, can I go with you?" A sudden voice came from behind Lin Yi, startling him as he hadn't been constantly using his mental perception to observe his surroundings.
"Who are you? Uh..." Lin Yi struggled to remember the name of this Big-Headed Boy.
"Brice! I just joined your group!" Brice saluted Lin Yi with an awkward military gesture.
"Aren't you afraid?" Lin Yi asked, gesturing toward the eerie surroundings; even he felt somewhat frightened.
The howling wind seemed to play a dirge for this apocalyptic decay as Brice wrapped his coat tighter around himself, visibly agitated. "She’s my girlfriend!"
Lin Yi paused for a moment before realizing Brice was referring to Emma. He smiled helplessly, recalling how little attention he paid to relationships at Brice's age.
The two continued down the main road where not even a single streetlight remained. Fortunately, Brice had brought along a wolf-eye flashlight that allowed him to keep pace with Lin Yi. In fact, it was a main road with few buildings around; one could see straight ahead if visibility allowed it.
Suddenly, Lin Yi sensed a rustling sound not far away, as if a group of mice were gnawing at the corners of a wooden door. The low, dense sound sent chills down his spine.
"Are there really mice with so many wild cats around?" Lin Yi frowned as he looked in the direction of the noise.
Brice, who had been beside Lin Yi, followed his gaze. But in the next moment, the light from Brice's flashlight illuminated his face, which turned pale instantly. His frail body began to tremble uncontrollably, as if he had seen something terrifying.
"What’s wrong? Why are you so scared?" Lin Yi asked, somewhat displeased.
"That place is full of graves," Brice stammered, his eyes wide as if he had truly seen a ghost.
"You’re standing on a place that might have been a graveyard many years ago!" Lin Yi retorted. But then he realized with a shock that this was the city center; how could there be a graveyard here?
"Those who were bitten by zombies are buried there because it’s the center of the Defensive City walls, closest to each wall," Brice explained, trying to steady his emotions. He was determined to become a hero who saves people; he couldn’t afford to be so cowardly.
Lin Yi nodded and continued forward. Although Brice was scared, knowing that there was a heroic figure beside him made him feel less apprehensive.
The two moved quickly, and soon Brice began to pant heavily. The surroundings grew darker, and they could barely see any outlines at all.
Brice shone the flashlight continuously toward the graveyard but hoped deep down that he wouldn’t see anything. Lin Yi's ears were still sharp; he could hear that strange noise growing louder.
Suddenly, Brice's flashlight froze on a spot, and he started trembling uncontrollably. Following the beam of light, Lin Yi saw a woman with long golden hair sitting on a raised mound with her back to them. She lowered her head, moving it up and down as if pecking at something like a chicken.
A long-haired woman squatted in the graveyard on a mound with her back to them, seemingly eating something—this was unsettling in every way.
"Emma..." Brice's eyes widened in shock. Although he was curious about why she was here in the middle of the night, he instinctively ran toward her. Lin Yi was taken aback and didn’t manage to stop him before he dashed off.
In the next moment, Emma suddenly turned around. Her pale face was horrifying; her jaw was missing, and her mouth was smeared with dark red blood. Scarlet stains splattered across what should have been her beautiful face, and her eyes were now gray and lifeless. In her hand was a blackened skull covered in maggots and pus, stained with blood that didn’t belong to her. Even as she turned around, she continued gnawing at that hard black skull. Lin Yi could almost imagine Emma attacking it like a starving ghoul would pounce on food, tearing into it with all her might—even if her jaw broke from the pressure of biting down on it.
Brice froze in place the moment he saw Emma; he couldn’t accept that his beloved had transformed into a terrifying specter.
"Roar~" Emma's once-gray eyes suddenly turned scarlet upon seeing food—perfect food!
Brice stood motionless as that blood-soaked face without a jaw lunged toward him. He felt as if that incomplete face was smiling at him while slowly merging with the image of the most beautiful girl from his memories.
"She’s already a zombie!" Lin Yi shouted desperately, but Brice clearly couldn’t accept this reality.
As Emma's corpse transformed into a zombie and prepared to bite Brice's neck, Lin Yi could no longer hold back.
With a sharp sound, the Silver Soul was unsheathed and shot through the air at a terrifying speed.
The silver blade traced a beautiful crescent arc, and the neck that had once supported Emma's body was severed with a clean snap!
With a thud, Emma's head collided with Brice's face, fulfilling his long-held wish of kissing the beloved girl under the night sky. Yet this kiss was cold with death and filled with endless fear.
A roar echoed through the darkness, causing Lin Yi's heart to skip a beat as he sensed trouble. The unguarded city wall was suddenly breached by Zombies, and it seemed that Emma had just been infected by one of them that had stealthily entered.
Lin Yi grabbed Brice, who was still in shock and sorrow, and transformed into a shadow, racing towards the main entrance.
In just a few seconds, Lin Yi reached the gate, but to his surprise, the once bustling crowd had nearly vanished. Only a Bullet Head smart vehicle remained at the City Gate. Lin Yi dashed straight into the vehicle.
Inside were members of his Mercenary team, but among them was also a Big-Eared Man—the scruffy fellow who had just expressed interest in joining their group.
"What happened?" Lin Yi felt an uneasy sensation; there had been so many people just moments ago, and now it was so strange to see only them.
"Lone Wolf has already led most of the group to retreat. His larger team is vulnerable to Zombie attacks; he has significant responsibilities and needs to consider the bigger picture!" Pachy explained.
Just as Lin Yi was about to respond, his expression changed dramatically. He shouted to Akin, who was driving in front: "Drive out quickly! They're coming!"
